Telemonitoring in the Covid-19 era: The tuscany region experience
Covid-19 has brought many difficulties in the management of infected and high-risk patients. Telemedicine platforms can really help in this situation, since they allow remotely monitoring Covid-19 patients, reducing the risk for the doctors, without decreasing the efficiency of the therapies and while alleviating patients’ mental issues. In this paper, we present the entire architecture and the experience of using the Tel.Te.Covid19 telemedicine platform. Projected for the treatment of chronic diseases, it has been technologically updated for the management of Covid-19 patients with the support of a group of doctors in the territory when the pandemic arrived, introducing new sensors and functionalities (e.g., the familiar use and video calls). In Tuscany (Central Italy), during the first wave of outbreak, a model for enrolling patients was created and tested. Because of the positive results, the latter has been then adopted in the second current wave. The Tel.Te.Covid19 platform has been used by 40 among general practitioners and doctors of continuity care and about 180 symptomatic patients since March 2020. Both patients and doctors have good opinion of the platform, and no hospitalisations or deaths occurred for the monitored patients, reducing also the impact on the National Healthcare System
Validation of rainfall estimation derived from commercial DVB received signal with disdrometer, rain gauges and ground based radar
An accurate measurement and monitoring of precipitation events is closely linked with different applications that have an impact on human welfare such as water resources management, and floods, landslides or wildfire risk assessments. Currently rain gauges, disdrometers, ground-based weather radars and satellite sensors (both active and passive) can be considered the conventional devices for precipitation measurements that are worldwide adopted. These devices have different measurement principles, time and space resolution, and accuracy (Gebremichael and Testik, 2013). In the last decade, a new technology that exploits the microwave satellite links has been investigated to retrieve precipitation information. The idea is to estimate the precipitation starting from the attenuation of the signal along its propagation path. Few studies have been carried out in this direction (such as Barthès and Mallet, 2013 and Mercier et al., 2015), showing promising results. In that regards, recently, an Italian project called NEFOCAST, funded by Tuscany Region (Italy), has been carried out with the aim of estimating rainfall rate from attenuation measurements made available by commercial interactive digital video broadcasting (DVB) receivers, called smartLNBs. During the NEFOCAST project, an ad hoc rainfall retrieval algorithm has been developed, tuned and tested. It allows to estimate, with 1-minute rate, the instantaneous rainfall rate (R, in mm/h) from the ratio η = Es/N0 between the received energy-per-symbol Es and the one-sided power spectral density of the additive white Gaussian noise N0, (Giannetti et al. 2017). To validate the algorithm, a 1-year field campaign (from January 2018 to January 2019) was conducted. The collected data allow to compare the SmartLNB precipitation estimates with the measurements gathered by ‘conventional’ meteorological devices such as rain gauges, weather radar and disdrometer. A network of 24 smartLNBs was deployed in Tuscany, along with 11 rain gauges and one X-band dual-polarization weather radar. Furthermore, the performance of the NEFOCAST algorithm has been preliminarily tested by comparing data provided from one SmartLNB installed at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC) of CNR in Rome (Italy) with a co-located laser disdrometer. For this site, data from a dual polarization C-band weather radar (Polar55C) could be compared with SmartLNB measurements along the Earth-satellite link. In fact, during the project the Polar55C has been aimed in the same direction as the SmartLNB, with the same elevation angle, thus scanning the same portion of atmosphere where the SmartLNB signal was propagating. Preliminary results show a good agreement between the total cumulative precipitation (in mm) obtained from SmartLNB data and the one collected by the co-located disdrometer during different rainfall events. The corresponding values of Normalized Mean Absolute Error (NMAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) obtained comparing the total cumulative precipitations obtained from SmartLNB and disdrometer are 41% and 4.71 mm, respectively. Encouraging results come also from the comparison of the total precipitation amounts as measured by the network of SmartLNBs and rain gauges, with values of NMAE (RMSE) that range between 39% and 53% (2.8 mm and 8.0 mm), depending on the specific site
The association of food ingredients in breakfast cereal products and fumonisins production: risks identification and predictions
Breakfast processed products are remarkably at risk of fungal contamination. This research surveyed the fumonisins concentration in different breakfast products, and carried out in-vitro experiments measuring fumonisins content in different substrates inoculated with Fusarium verticillioides. The pipeline started with the identification of combinations of ingredients for 58 breakfast products. Twenty-three core ingredients, seven nutritional components and production types were analyzed using a Pearson correlation, k-means clustering and principal component analysis to show that no single factor is responsible for high fumonisins detection in processed cereals products. Consequently, decision tree regression was used as a means of determining and visualizing complex logical interactions between the same factors. We clustered the association of ingredients in low, medium, and high risk of fumonisin detection. The analysis showed that high fumonisins concentration is associated with those products that have high maize concentrations coupled especially with high sodium or rice. In a in-vitro experiment, different media were prepared by mixing the ingredients in the proportion found in the first survey and by measuring fumonisins production by Fusarium verticillioides. Results showed that: 1) fumonisins production by F. verticillioides is boosted by the synergistic effect of maize and highly ready carbohydrate content such as white flour; 2) a combination of maize >26%(w/w), rice >2.5%(w/w), NaCl >2.2%(w/w) led to high fumonisins production, while mono-ingredient products were more protective against fumonisins production. The observations in the in-vitro experiments appeared to align with the decision tree model that an increase in ingredient complexity can lead to fumonisins production by Fusarium. However, more research is urgently needed to develop the area of predictive mycology based on the association of processing, ingredients, fungal development, and mycotoxins production
A Drug Screening Revealed Novel Potential Agents against Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Simple Summary Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a disease of the pleura related to asbestos exposure. Despite the advancements in new therapeutic frontiers, it has a dismal prognosis and very limited treatment options. To find novel weapons in the care of MPM, we undertook a drug-repurposing approach that consists of evaluating existing drugs already approved for other human diseases. We screened 1170 drugs, and we observed that cephalomannine, a taxane; ouabain, a cardiac glycoside; thonzonium bromide, an antifungal surfactant; and emetine, an emetic alkaloid, had marked activity against immortalized and patient-derived primary MPM cell lines. These compounds were shown to be promising, and they will be evaluated in further studies, both in vitro and in vivo. We believe that drug repurposing is a valuable strategy to facilitate and accelerate the definition of novel treatment options for the management of MPM. The lack of effective therapies remains one of the main challenges for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). In this perspective, drug repositioning could accelerate the identification of novel treatments. We screened 1170 FDA-approved drugs on a SV40-immortalized mesothelial (MeT-5A) and five MPM (Mero-14, Mero-25, IST-Mes2, NCI-H28 and MSTO-211H) cell lines. Biological assays were carried out for 41 drugs, showing the highest cytotoxicity and for whom there were a complete lack of published literature in MPM. Cytotoxicity and caspase activation were evaluated with commercially available kits and cell proliferation was assayed using MTT assay and by clonogenic activity with standard protocols. Moreover, the five most effective drugs were further evaluated on patient-derived primary MPM cell lines. The most active molecules were cephalomannine, ouabain, alexidine, thonzonium bromide, and emetine. Except for alexidine, these drugs inhibited the clonogenic ability and caspase activation in all cancer lines tested. The proliferation was inhibited also on an extended panel of cell lines, including primary MPM cells. Thus, we suggest that cephalomannine, ouabain, thonzonium bromide, and emetine could represent novel candidates to be repurposed for improving the arsenal of therapeutic weapons in the fight against MPM

Derived coisotropic structures I: affine case
We define and study coisotropic structures on morphisms of commutative dg
algebras in the context of shifted Poisson geometry, i.e. -algebras.
Roughly speaking, a coisotropic morphism is given by a -algebra acting
on a -algebra. One of our main results is an identification of the space
of such coisotropic structures with the space of Maurer--Cartan elements in a
certain dg Lie algebra of relative polyvector fields. To achieve this goal, we
construct a cofibrant replacement of the operad controlling coisotropic
morphisms by analogy with the Swiss-cheese operad which can be of independent
interest. Finally, we show that morphisms of shifted Poisson algebras are
identified with coisotropic structures on their graph.Comment: 49 pages. v2: many proofs rewritten and the paper is split into two

Towards Space Deployment of the NDSA Concept for Tropospheric Water Vapour Measurements
A novel measurement concept specifically tuned to monitoring tropospheric water vapour's vertical distribution has been demonstrated on a theoretical basis and is currently under development for space deployment. The NDSA (Normalised Differential Spectral Attenuation) technique derives the integrated water vapour (IWV) along the radio link between a transmitter and a receiver carried by two LEO satellites, using the linear correlation between the IWV and a parameter called spectral sensitivity. This is the normalised incremental ratio of the spectral attenuation at two frequencies in the Ku and K bands, with the slope of the water vapour absorption line at 22.235 GHz. Vertical profiles of WV can be retrieved by inverting a set of IWV measurements acquired in limb geometry at different tangent altitudes. This paper provides a comprehensive insight into the NDSA approach for sounding lower tropospheric WV, from the theoretical investigations in previous ESA studies, to the first experimental developments and testing, and to the latest advancements achieved with the SATCROSS project of the Italian Space Agency. The focus is on the new results from SATCROSS activities; primarily, on the upgrading of the instrument prototype, with improved performance in terms of its power stability and the time resolution of the measurements. Special emphasis is also placed on discussing tomographic inversion methods capable of retrieving tropospheric WV content from IWV measurements, i.e., the least squares and the external reconstruction approaches, showing results with different spatial features when applied to a given atmospheric scenario. The ultimate goal of deploying the NDSA measurement technique from space is thoroughly examined and conclusions are drawn after presenting the results of an Observing System Simulation Experiment conducted to assess the impact of NDSA data assimilation on environmental model simulations
Database of the Italian disdrometer network
In 2021, a group of seven Italian institutions decided to bring together their know-how, experience, and instruments for measuring the drop size distribution (DSD) of atmospheric precipitation, giving birth to the Italian Group of Disdrometry (in Italian named Gruppo Italiano Disdrometria, GID, https://www.gid-net.it/, last access: 16 May 2023). GID has made freely available a database of 1 min records of DSD collected by the disdrometer network along the Italian peninsula. At the time of writing, the disdrometer network was composed of eight laser disdrometers belonging to six different Italian institutions (including research centres, universities, and environmental regional agencies). This work aims to document the technical aspects of the Italian DSD database consisting of 1 min sampling data from 2012 to 2021 in a uniform standard format defined within GID. Although not all the disdrometers have the same data record length, the DSD data collection effort is the first of its kind in Italy, and from here onwards, it opens up new opportunities in the surface characterization of microphysical properties of precipitation in the perspective of climate records and beyond. The Version 01 GID
database can be downloaded at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6875801 (Adirosi et al., 2022), while Version 02 can be downloaded at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7708563 (Adirosi et al., 2023). The difference among the two versions is the diameter–fall velocity relation used for the DSD computation
