    Montseciella, a new orbitolinid genus (Foraminiferida) from the Uppermost Hauterivian -Early Barremian of SW Europe

    Montseciella, a new larger foraminiferal orbitolinid genus, is established. It comprises: M. glanensis (Foury, 1968) (uppermost Late Hauterivian to basal Early Barremian) from Serra del Montsec (Lleida Prov., Catalonian Pyrenees, Spain), Basse Provence (France) and the French Subalpine Chains, and its direct phylogenetic descendant M. alguerensis n. sp. (higher Early Barremian) from NW Sardinia (Italy). These two species represent the lower part of a phylogenetic lineage to which also belong 'Dictyoconus' arabicus Henson, 1948 and Rectodictyoconus giganteus Schroeder, 1964, occuring in the Late Barremian and lowermost Early Aptian. Este nuevo taxón incluye: M. glanensis (Foury, 1968) (Hauteriviense superior terminal - Barremiense inferior basal), encontrandose en la Serra del Montsec (Prov. de Lleida, Pirineo Catalán, España) y en la Baja Provenza y las Cadenas Subalpinas (Francia), y su descendiente directo M. alguerensis n. sp. (Barremiense inferior no basal) de Cerdeña (Italia). Los dos especies representan la parte inferior de una línea filogenética, a la cual pertenecen también 'Dictyoconus' arabicus Henson, 1948 y Rectodictyoconus giganteus Schroeder, 1964, del Barremiense superior y Aptiense inferior basal.     Partially Unbiased Entangled Bases

    In this contribution we group the operator basis for d^2 dimensional Hilbert space in a way that enables us to relate bases of entangled states with single particle mutually unbiased state bases (MUB), each in dimensionality d. We utilize these sets of operators to show that an arbitrary density matrix for this d^2 dimensional Hilbert space system is analyzed by via d^2+d+1 measurements, d^2-d of which involve those entangled states that we associate with MUB of the d-dimensional single particle constituents. The number d2+d+1d^2+d+1 lies in the middle of the number of measurements needed for bipartite state reconstruction with two-particle MUB (d^2+1) and those needed by single-particle MUB [(d^2+1)^2].Comment: 5 page

    A general low frequency acoustic radiation capability for NASTRAN

    A new capability called NASHUA is described for calculating the radiated acoustic sound pressure field exterior to a harmonically-excited arbitrary submerged 3-D elastic structure. The surface fluid pressures and velocities are first calculated by coupling a NASTRAN finite element model of the structure with a discretized form of the Helmholtz surface integral equation for the exterior fluid. After the fluid impedance is calculated, most of the required matrix operations are performed using the general matrix manipulation package (DMAP) available in NASTRAN. Far field radiated pressures are then calculated from the surface solution using the Helmholtz exterior integral equation. Other output quantities include the maximum sound pressure levels in each of the three coordinate planes, the rms and average surface pressures and normal velocities, the total radiated power and the radiation efficiency. The overall approach is illustrated and validated using known analytic solutions for submerged spherical shells subjected to both uniform and nonuniform applied loads

In the present computational study, we show that a model circuit of interneurons, coupled via both GABA(A) receptor synapses and electrical synapses, reproduces many essential features of the power spectrum of local field potential (LFP) recordings, such as 1/f power scaling at low frequency (< 10 Hz) , power accumulation in the γ-frequency band (30–100 Hz), and a robust α rhythm in the absence of stimulation. The low-frequency 1/f power scaling depends on strong reciprocal inhibition, whereas the α rhythm is generated by electrical coupling of intrinsically active neurons. As in previous studies, the γ power arises through the amplifica- tion of single-neuron spectral properties, owing to the refractory period, by parameters that favour neuronal synchrony, such as delayed inhibition. The present study also confirms that both synaptic and voltage-gated membrane currents substantially contribute to the LFP, and that high-frequency signals such as action potentials quickly taper off with distance. Given the ubiquity of electrically coupled interneuron circuits in the mammalian brain, they may be major determinants of the recorded potentials.Peer reviewe

    A sample of Early Barremian age from the Roca de Narieda (Lleida Prov., Catalonian Pyrenees, Spain) has furnished the orbitolinid Foraminifera Paracoskinolina pertenuis Foury, 1968 and Eopalorbitolina charollaisi Schroeder & Conrad, 1968. P. pertenuis sensu Foury is a mixture of at least three species belonging to different genera. Its holotype has to be assigned to the genus Eopalorbitolina. E. pertenuis is regarded as the direct ancestor of E. charollaisi and the most primitive representative of the phylogenetical lineage Eopalorbitolina - Palorbitolina gr. lenticularis.     El corte de la Roca de Narieda es el único del Pirineo catalán (región de Organyà, NE de España) en el que puede verse la agradación costera de casi todo el ciclo sedimentario del Cretácico inferior: desde el Neocomiense al Aptiense superior. El solapamiento expansivo (retrogradación) de distintos cuerpos sedimentarios sobre el substrato jurásico corresponde al borde SE de la cuenca sudpirenaica de esta época. El análisis micropaleontológico ha sido el que ha permitido modificar las ideas erróneas, secuenciales y cronoestratigráficas, que se tenían sobre esta montaña difícil de explorar.     Observed crustal uplift near the Southern Patagonian Icefield constrains improved viscoelastic Earth model

    Thirty‒one GPS geodetic measurements of crustal uplift in southernmost South America determined extraordinarily high trend rates (> 35 mm/yr) in the north‒central part of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. These trends have a coherent pattern, motivating a refined viscoelastic glacial isostatic adjustment model to explain the observations. Two end‒member models provide good fits: both require a lithospheric thickness of 36.5 ± 5.3 km. However, one end‒member has a mantle viscosity near η =1.6 ×1018 Pa s and an ice collapse rate from the Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum comparable to a lowest recent estimate of 1995–2012 ice loss at about −11 Gt/yr. In contrast, the other end‒member has much larger viscosity: η = 8.0 ×1018 Pa s, half the post–LIA collapse rate, and a steadily rising loss rate in the twentieth century after AD 1943, reaching −25.9 Gt/yr during 1995–2012.Fil: Lange, H..
