Electro-optic bunch diagnostics on ALICE
An electro-optic longitudinal bunch profile monitor has been implemented on ALICE (Accelerators and Lasers in Combined Experiments) at the Daresbury Laboratories and will be used both to characterise the electron bunch and to provide a testbed for electro-optic techniques. The electro-optic station is located immediately after the bunch compressor, within the FEL cavity; its location allows nearby OTR, beam profile monitors and Coherent Synchrontron Radiation (CSR) diagnostics to be used for calibration and benchmarking. We discuss the implementation and the planned studies on electro-optic diagnostics using this diagnostic station
Minimal Model for Disorder-induced Missing Moment of Inertia in Solid He
The absence of a missing moment inertia in clean solid He suggests that
the minimal experimentally relevant model is one in which disorder induces
superfluidity in a bosonic lattice. To this end, we explore the relevance of
the disordered Bose-Hubbard model in this context. We posit that a clean array
He atoms is a self-generated Mott insulator, that is, the He atoms
constitute the lattice as well as the `charge carriers'. With this assumption,
we are able to interpret the textbook defect-driven supersolids as excitations
of either the lower or upper Hubbard bands. In the experiments at hand,
disorder induces a closing of the Mott gap through the generation of mid-gap
localized states at the chemical potential. Depending on the magnitude of the
disorder, we find that the destruction of the Mott state takes place for
either through a Bose glass phase (strong disorder) or through a direct
transition to a superfluid (weak disorder). For , disorder is always
relevant. The critical value of the disorder that separates these two regimes
is shown to be a function of the boson filling, interaction and the momentum
cut off. We apply our work to the experimentally observed enhancement He
impurities has on the onset temperature for the missing moment of inertia. We

ARCS, The Arcminute Radio Cluster-lens Search - I. Selection Criteria and Initial Results
We present the results of an unbiased radio search for gravitational lensing
events with image separations between 15 and 60 arcsec, which would be
associated with clusters of galaxies with masses >10^{13-14}M_{\sun}. A parent
population of 1023 extended radio sources stronger than 35 mJy with stellar
optical identifications was selected using the FIRST radio catalogue at 1.4 GHz
and the APM optical catalogue. The FIRST catalogue was then searched for
companions to the parent sources stronger than 7 mJy and with separation in the
range 15 to 60 arcsec. Higher resolution observations of the resulting 38 lens
candidates were made with the VLA at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and with MERLIN at 5
GHz in order to test the lens hypothesis in each case. None of our targets was
found to be a gravitational lens system. These results provide the best current
constraint on the lensing rate for this angular scale, but improved
calculations of lensing rates from realistic simulations of the clustering of
matter on the relevant scales are required before cosmologically significant
constraints can be derived from this null result. We now have an efficient,
tested observational strategy with which it will be possible to make an

Breakdown of Strong-Coupling Perturbation Theory in Doped Mott Insulators
We show that doped Mott insulators, such as the copper-oxide superconductors,
are asymptotically slaved in that the quasiparticle weight, , near
half-filling depends critically on the existence of the high energy scale set
by the upper Hubbard band. In particular, near half filling, the following
dichotomy arises: when the high energy scale is integrated out but Z=0
in the thermodynamic limit when it is retained. Slavery to the high energy
scale arises from quantum interference between electronic excitations across
the Mott gap. Broad spectral features seen in photoemission in the normal state
of the cuprates are argued to arise from high energy slavery.Comment: Published versio
Upconversion of a relativistic Coulomb field terahertz pulse to the near infrared
We demonstrate the spectral upconversion of a unipolar subpicosecond terahertz (THz) pulse, where the THz pulse is the Coulomb field of a single relativistic electron bunch. The upconversion to the optical allows remotely located detection of long wavelength and nonpropagating components of the THz spectrum, as required for ultrafast electron bunch diagnostics. The upconversion of quasimonochromatic THz radiation has also been demonstrated, allowing the observation of distinct sum- and difference-frequency mixing components in the spectrum. Polarization dependence of first and second order sidebands at ωopt±ωTHz, and ωopt±2ωTHz, respectively, confirms the χ(2) frequency mixing mechanism
Excitation of the molecular gas in the nuclear region of M82
We present high-resolution HIFI spectroscopy of the nucleus of the archetypical starburst galaxy M 82. Six ^(12)CO lines, 2 ^(13)CO lines and 4 fine-structure lines have been detected. Besides showing the effects of the overall velocity structure of the nuclear region, the line profiles also indicate the presence of multiple components with different optical depths, temperatures, and densities in the observing beam. The data have been interpreted using a grid of PDR models. It is found that the majority of the molecular gas is in low density (n = 10^(3.5) cm^(-3)) clouds, with column densities of N_H = 10^(21.5) cm^(-2) and a relatively low UV radiation field (G_0 = 10^2). The remaining gas is predominantly found in clouds with higher densities (n = 10^5 cm^(-3)) and radiation fields (G_0 = 10^(2.75)), but somewhat lower column densities (N_H = 10^(21.2) cm^(-2)). The highest J CO lines are dominated by a small (1% relative surface filling) component, with an even higher density (n = 10^6 cm^(-3)) and UV field (G_0 = 10^(3.25)). These results show the strength of multi-component modelling for interpretating the integrated properties of galaxies
Mid-Infrared Observations of Planetary Nebulae detected in the GLIMPSE 3D Survey
We present mapping, profiles and photometry for 24 planetary nebulae (PNe)
detected in the GLIMPSE 3D mid-infrared (MIR) survey of the Galactic plane. The
PNe show many of the properties observed in previous studies of these sources,
including evidence for longer wave emission from outside of the ionised zones,
a likely consequence of emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
within the nebular photo-dissociation regimes (PDRs). We also note variations
in 5.8/4.5 and 8.0/4.5 microns flux ratios with distance from the nuclei;
present evidence for enhanced MIR emission in the halos of the sources; and

Search for Rapid Changes in the Visible-Light Corona during the 21 June 2001 Total Solar Eclipse
Some 8000 images obtained with the SECIS fast-frame CCD camera instrument
located at Lusaka, Zambia, during the total eclipse of 21 June 2001 have been
analyzed to search for short-period oscillations in intensity that could be a
signature of solar coronal heating mechanisms by MHD wave dissipation. Images
were taken in white- light and Fe XIV green-line (5303 A) channels over 205
seconds (frame rate 39 s-1), approximately the length of eclipse totality at
this location, with a pixel size of four arcseconds square. The data are of
considerably better quality than were obtained during the 11 August 1999 total
eclipse, observed by us (Rudawy et al.: Astron. Astrophys. 416, 1179, 2004), in
that the images are much better exposed and enhancements in the drive system of
the heliostat used gave a much improved image stability. Classical Fourier and
wavelet techniques have been used to analyze the emission at 29518 locations,
of which 10714 had emission at reasonably high levels, searching for periodic
fluctuations with periods in the range 0.1-17 seconds (frequencies 0.06-10 Hz).
While a number of possible periodicities were apparent in the wavelet analysis,
none of the spatially and time-limited periodicities in the local brightness
curves was found to be physically important. This implies that the pervasive
Alfven wave-like phenomena (Tomczyk et al.: Science 317, 1192, 2007) using
polarimetric observations with the CoMP instrument do not give rise to

A Survey of the Galactic Plane for 6.7-GHz Methanol Masers I: l = 325.0 - 335.0 ; b = -0.53 - 0.53
We report the results of the first complete survey of an area of the Galactic
Plane for maser emission from the 6.7-GHz transition of methanol. The survey
covers a 10.6-square-degree region of the Galactic Plane in the longitude range
325-335 degrees and latitude range -0.53-0.53 degrees. The survey is sensitive
to masers with a peak flux density greater than approximately 2.6 Jy. The
weakest maser detected has a peak flux density of 2.3 Jy and the strongest a
peak flux density of 425 Jy. We detected a total of 50 distinct masers, 26 of
which are new detections. We show that many 6.7-GHz methanol masers are not
associated with IRAS sources, and that some are associated with sources that
have colours differing from those of a typical ultra-compact HII region
(UCHII). We estimate that the number of UCHII regions in the Galaxy is
significantly more than suggested by IRAS-based estimates, possibly by more
