Evolution of constrained layer damping using a cellular automaton algorithm
Constrained layer damping (CLD) is a highly effective passive vibration control strategy if optimized adequately. Factors controlling CLD performance are well documented for the flexural modes of beams but not for more complicated mode shapes or structures. The current paper introduces an approach that is suitable for locating CLD on any type of structure. It follows the cellular automaton (CA) principle and relies on the use of finite element models to describe the vibration properties of the structure. The ability of the algorithm to reach the best solution is demonstrated by applying it to the bending and torsion modes of a plate. Configurations that give the most weight-efficient coverage for each type of mode are first obtained by adapting the existing 'optimum length' principle used for treated beams. Next, a CA algorithm is developed, which grows CLD patches one at a time on the surface of the plate according to a simple set of rules. The effectiveness of the algorithm is then assessed by comparing the generated configurations with the known optimum ones
Hybrid metaheuristic for combinatorial optimization based on immune network for optimization and VNS
Metaheuristics for optimization based on the immune network theory are often highlighted by being able to maintain the diversity of candidate solutions present in the population, allowing a greater coverage of the search space. This work, however, shows that algorithms derived from the aiNET family for the solution of combinatorial problems may not present an adequate strategy for search space exploration, leading to premature convergence in local minimums. In order to solve this issue, a hybrid metaheuristic called VNS-aiNET is proposed, integrating aspects of the COPT-aiNET algorithm with characteristics of the trajectory metaheuristic Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS), as well as a new fitness function, which makes it possible to escape from local minima and enables it to a greater exploration of the search space. The proposed metaheuristic is evaluated using a scheduling problem widely studied in the literature. The performed experiments show that the proposed hybrid metaheuristic presents a convergence superior to two approaches of the aiNET family and to the reference algorithms of the literature. In contrast, the solutions present in the resulting immunological memory have less diversity when compared to the aiNET family approaches
Infrared Behavior of Interacting Bosons at Zero Temperature
We exploit the symmetries associated with the stability of the superfluid
phase to solve the long-standing problem of interacting bosons in the presence
of a condensate at zero temperature. Implementation of these symmetries poses
strong conditions on the renormalizations that heal the singularities of
perturbation theory. The renormalized theory gives: For d>3 the Bogoliubov
quasiparticles as an exact result; for 1<d<=3 a nontrivial solution with the
exact exponent for the singular longitudinal correlation function, with phonons
again as low-lying excitations.Comment: Minor Changes. 4 pages, RevTeX, no figures, uses multicol.sty e-mail:

Relating pseudospin and spin symmetries through charge conjugation and chiral transformations: the case of the relativistic harmonic oscillator
We solve the generalized relativistic harmonic oscillator in 1+1 dimensions,
i.e., including a linear pseudoscalar potential and quadratic scalar and vector
potentials which have equal or opposite signs. We consider positive and
negative quadratic potentials and discuss in detail their bound-state solutions
for fermions and antifermions. The main features of these bound states are the
same as the ones of the generalized three-dimensional relativistic harmonic
oscillator bound states. The solutions found for zero pseudoscalar potential
are related to the spin and pseudospin symmetry of the Dirac equation in 3+1
dimensions. We show how the charge conjugation and chiral
transformations relate the several spectra obtained and find that for massless
particles the spin and pseudospin symmetry related problems have the same
spectrum, but different spinor solutions. Finally, we establish a relation of
the solutions found with single-particle states of nuclei described by
relativistic mean-field theories with scalar, vector and isoscalar tensor
interactions and discuss the conditions in which one may have both nucleon and
antinucleon bound states.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, uses revtex macro

Effects due to a scalar coupling on the particle-antiparticle production in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory
The Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau formalism with vector and scalar potentials is used
to point out a few misconceptions diffused in the literature. It is explicitly
shown that the scalar coupling makes the DKP formalism not equivalent to the
Klein-Gordon formalism or to the Proca formalism, and that the spin-1 sector of
the DKP theory looks formally like the spin-0 sector. With proper boundary
conditions, scattering of massive bosons in an arbitrary mixed vector-scalar
square step potential is explored in a simple way and effects due to the scalar
coupling on the particle-antiparticle production and localization of bosons are
analyzed in some detail
Relativistic confinement of neutral fermions with a trigonometric tangent potential
The problem of neutral fermions subject to a pseudoscalar potential is
investigated. Apart from the solutions for , the problem is
mapped into the Sturm-Liouville equation. The case of a singular trigonometric
tangent potential () is exactly solved and the
complete set of solutions is discussed in some detail. It is revealed that this
intrinsically relativistic and true confining potential is able to localize
fermions into a region of space arbitrarily small without the menace of
particle-antiparticle production.Comment: 12 page
