    Design and Vertical Tests of SPS-series Double-Quarter Wave (DQW) Cavity Prototypes for the HL-LHC Crab Cavity System

    Crab crossing is essential for high-luminosity colliders. The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will equip one of its Interaction Points (IP1) with Double-Quarter Wave (DQW) crab cavities. A DQW cavity is a new generation of deflecting RF cavities that stands out for its compactness and broad frequency separation between fundamental and first high-order modes. The deflecting kick is provided by its fundamental mode. Each HL-LHC DQW cavity shall provide a nominal deflecting voltage of 3.4 MV, although up to 5.0 MV may be required. A Proof-of-Principle (PoP) DQW cavity was limited by quench at 4.6 MV. This paper describes a new, highly optimized cavity, designated DQW SPS-series, which satisfies dimensional, cryogenic, manufacturing and impedance requirements for beam tests at SPS and operation in LHC. Two prototypes of this DQW SPS-series were fabricated by US industry and cold tested after following conventional SRF surface treatment. Both units outperformed the PoP cavity, reaching a deflecting voltage of 5.3-5.9 MV. This voltage - the highest reached by a DQW cavity - is well beyond the nominal voltage of 3.4 MV and may even operate at the ultimate voltage of 5.0MVwith sufficient margin.     The structure of the Kac-Wang-Yan algebra

    The Lie algebra D\mathcal{D} of regular differential operators on the circle has a universal central extension D^\hat{\mathcal{D}}. The invariant subalgebra D^+\hat{\mathcal{D}}^+ under an involution preserving the principal gradation was introduced by Kac, Wang, and Yan. The vacuum D^+\hat{\mathcal{D}}^+-module with central charge cCc\in\mathbb{C}, and its irreducible quotient Vc\mathcal{V}_c, possess vertex algebra structures, and Vc\mathcal{V}_c has a nontrivial structure if and only if c12Zc\in \frac{1}{2}\mathbb{Z}. We show that for each integer n>0n>0, Vn/2\mathcal{V}_{n/2} and Vn\mathcal{V}_{-n} are W\mathcal{W}-algebras of types W(2,4,,2n)\mathcal{W}(2,4,\dots,2n) and W(2,4,,2n2+4n)\mathcal{W}(2,4,\dots, 2n^2+4n), respectively. These results are formal consequences of Weyl's first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the orthogonal group O(n)\text{O}(n) and the symplectic group Sp(2n)\text{Sp}(2n), respectively. Based on Sergeev's theorems on the invariant theory of Osp(1,2n)\text{Osp}(1,2n) we conjecture that Vn+1/2\mathcal{V}_{-n + 1/2} is of type W(2,4,,4n2+8n+2)\mathcal{W}(2,4,\dots, 4n^2+8n+2), and we prove this for n=1n=1. As an application, we show that invariant subalgebras of βγ\beta\gamma-systems and free fermion algebras under arbitrary reductive group actions are strongly finitely generated.Comment: Final versio

    Status of the Stony Brook Superconducting Heavy-Ion Linac

    We describe the present status of the State University of New York at Stony Brook Superconducting Heavy-Ion LINAC (SUNYLAC). The LINAC will extend at very modest cost the capabilities of the existing FN tandem Van de Graaff into the energy range 5-10 MeV/A for light heavy-ions from oxygen to bromine. The active elements are 43 lead-plated copper superconducting resonators of the split-loop type optimized for either velocity ß=v/c=0.055 or ß=0.10. Phase and amplitude of each resonator is independently set through RF-feedback controllers interfaced to an overall computer control system. Full scale construction work began in July, 1979 following the in-beam demonstration of a prototype LINAC module containing 4 low-ß resonators, and the majority of the installation work on the beam transport and refrigeration systems was completed in the summer of 1980. The project is now well into its final assembly and testing phase, with the completion of assembly scheduled in early 1982. We describe details of the design of key elements of the LINAC and the initial operating experience with the injection beam path, helium refrigerator and first production accelerator module. The progress of a continuing program aimed at optimizing crucial aspects of the LINAC is also reviewed

    Origin and evolution of the octoploid strawberry genome.

    Cultivated strawberry emerged from the hybridization of two wild octoploid species, both descendants from the merger of four diploid progenitor species into a single nucleus more than 1 million years ago. Here we report a near-complete chromosome-scale assembly for cultivated octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) and uncovered the origin and evolutionary processes that shaped this complex allopolyploid. We identified the extant relatives of each diploid progenitor species and provide support for the North American origin of octoploid strawberry. We examined the dynamics among the four subgenomes in octoploid strawberry and uncovered the presence of a single dominant subgenome with significantly greater gene content, gene expression abundance, and biased exchanges between homoeologous chromosomes, as compared with the other subgenomes. Pathway analysis showed that certain metabolomic and disease-resistance traits are largely controlled by the dominant subgenome. These findings and the reference genome should serve as a powerful platform for future evolutionary studies and enable molecular breeding in strawberry

    On identifiability for chemical systems from measurable variables

These sets of ordinary differential equations are basically non-linear, their complexity grows as much increases the number of substances present in the reacting media an can be characterized by a set of phenomenological constants which contains all the relevant information about the physical system.     Creating and Validating an Algorithm to Measure AIDS Mortality in the Adult Population using Verbal Autopsy

    BACKGROUND: Vital registration and cause of death reporting is incomplete in the countries in which the HIV epidemic is most severe. A reliable tool that is independent of HIV status is needed for measuring the frequency of AIDS deaths and ultimately the impact of antiretroviral therapy on mortality. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A verbal autopsy questionnaire was administered to caregivers of 381 adults of known HIV status who died between 1998 and 2003 in Manicaland, eastern Zimbabwe. Individuals who were HIV positive and did not die in an accident or during childbirth (74%; n = 282) were considered to have died of AIDS in the gold standard. Verbal autopsies were randomly allocated to a training dataset (n = 279) to generate classification criteria or a test dataset (n = 102) to verify criteria. A rule-based algorithm created to minimise false positives had a specificity of 66% and a sensitivity of 76%. Eight predictors (weight loss, wasting, jaundice, herpes zoster, presence of abscesses or sores, oral candidiasis, acute respiratory tract infections, and vaginal tumours) were included in the algorithm. In the test dataset of verbal autopsies, 69% of deaths were correctly classified as AIDS/non-AIDS, and it was not necessary to invoke a differential diagnosis of tuberculosis. Presence of any one of these criteria gave a post-test probability of AIDS death of 0.84. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of verbal autopsy data in this rural Zimbabwean population revealed a distinct pattern of signs and symptoms associated with AIDS mortality. Using these signs and symptoms, demographic surveillance data on AIDS deaths may allow for the estimation of AIDS mortality and even HIV prevalence

    Young children's explorations of average through informal inferential reasoning

    This study situates children's early notions of average within an inquiry classroom to investigate the rich inferential reasoning that young children drew on to make sense of the questions: Is there a typical height for a student in year 3? If so, what is it? Based on their deliberations over several lessons, students' ideas about average and typicality evolved as meaning reasonable, contrary to atypical, most common (value or interval), middle, normative, and representative of the population. The case study reported here documents a new direction for the development of children's conceptions of average in a classroom designed to elicit their informal inferential reasoning about data
