Elliptic aspects of statistical mechanics on spheres
Our earlier results on the temperature inversion properties and the
ellipticisation of the finite temperature internal energy on odd spheres are
extended to orbifold factors of odd spheres and then to other thermodynamic
quantities, in particular to the specific heat. The behaviour under modular
transformations is facilitated by the introduction of a modular covariant
derivative and it is shown that the specific heat on any odd sphere can be
expressed in terms of just three functions. It is also shown that the free

Construction of a medical informatics thesaurus
pre-printMedical Informatics needs a specific terminology that reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of the field and can rapidly change as the discipline evolves. Using the four primary methods of thesaurus construction, a group at the University of Missouri- Columbia is developing a thesaurus that meets these criteria and includes both user and literary warrant. The steps in construction include using existing thesauri, medical informatics literature, and the terminology of experts to produce a thesaurus arranged within a hierarchical structure
Oligoclonal expansions of CD8(+) T cells in chronic HIV infection are antigen specific
Acute HIV infection is associated with a vigorous immune response characterized by the proliferation of selected T cell receptor V beta (BV)-expressing CD8(+) T cells. These 'expansions', which are commonly detected in the peripheral blood, can persist during chronic HIV infection and may result in the dominance of particular clones. Such clonal populations are most consistent with antigen-driven expansions of CD8(+) T cells. However, due to the difficulties in studying antigen-specific T cells in vivo, it has been hard to prove that oligoclonal BV expansions are actually HIV specific. The use of tetrameric major histocompatibility complex-peptide complexes has recently enabled direct visualization of antigen-specific T cells ex vivo but has not provided information on their clonal composition. We have now made use of these tetrameric complexes in conjunction with anti-BV chain-specific monoclonal antibodies and analysis of cytotoxic T lymphocyte lines/clones to show that chronically clonally expanded CD8(+) T cells are HIV specific in vivo
Fibrations of genus two on complex surfaces
We consider fibrations of genus 2 over complex surfaces. The purpose of this
paper is primarily to provide a geometric description of the possible
structures of the fibration on a neighborhood of a singular fiber. In
particular it is shown that the "geometric data" of the singular fiber
determines the fibration on its neighborhood up to a transversely holomorphic
-diffeomorphism. The method employed is quite flexible and it

Private applicators must record their restricted use pesticide (RUP) applications, as required by the Food, Agriculture, Conservation and Trade (FACT) Act of 1990. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service administers this activity. In Nebraska, RUP application records must be maintained for three years from the date of application. The certified pesticide applicator should retain these RUP records, but must be able to make them accessible for copying by authorized representatives. This booklet is a suggested guide for preliminary or final RUP application records
Viral load, clinical disease severity and cellular immune responses in primary varicella zoster virus infection in Sri Lanka
Background
In Sri Lanka, varicella zoster virus (VZV) is typically acquired during adulthood with significant associated disease morbidity and mortality. T cells are believed to be important in the control of VZV replication and in the prevention of reactivation. The relationship between viral load, disease severity and cellular immune responses in primary VZV infection has not been well studied.
Methodology
We used IFNÎł ELISpot assays and MHC class II tetramers based on VZV gE and IE63 epitopes, together with quantitative real time PCR assays to compare the frequency and phenotype of specific T cells with virological and clinical outcomes in 34 adult Sri Lankan individuals with primary VZV infection.
Principal Findings
Viral loads were found to be significantly higher in patients with moderate to severe infection compared to those with mild infection (p<0.001) and were significantly higher in those over 25 years of age (P<0.01). A significant inverse correlation was seen between the viral loads and the ex vivo IFNÎł ELISpot responses of patients (P<0.001, râ=ââ0.85). VZV-specific CD4+ T cells expressed markers of intermediate differentiation and activation.
Conclusions
Overall, these data show that increased clinical severity in Sri Lankan adults with primary VZV infection associates with higher viral load and reduced viral specific T cell responses
Statistical Model of Superconductivity in a 2D Binary Boson-Fermion Mixture
A two-dimensional (2D) assembly of noninteracting, temperature-dependent,
composite-boson Cooper pairs (CPs) in chemical and thermal equilibrium with
unpaired fermions is examined in a binary boson-fermion statistical model as
the superconducting singularity temperature is approached from above. The model
is derived from {\it first principles} for the BCS model interfermion
interaction from three extrema of the system Helmholtz free energy (subject to
constant pairable-fermion number) with respect to: a) the pairable-fermion
distribution function; b) the number of excited (bosonic) CPs, i.e., with
nonzero total momenta--usually ignored in BCS theory--and with the appropriate
(linear, as opposed to quadratic) dispersion relation that arises from the
Fermi sea; and c) the number of CPs with zero total momenta. Compared with the
BCS theory condensate, higher singularity temperatures for the Bose-Einstein
condensate are obtained in the binary boson-fermion mixture model which are in
rough agreement with empirical critical temperatures for quasi-2D
