    Meromorphic c=24 Conformal Field Theories

Modular invariant conformal field theories with just one primary field and central charge c=24c=24 are considered. It has been shown previously that if the chiral algebra of such a theory contains spin-1 currents, it is either the Leech lattice CFT, or it contains a Kac-Moody sub-algebra with total central charge 24. In this paper all meromorphic modular invariant combinations of the allowed Kac-Moody combinations are obtained. The result suggests the existence of 71 meromorphic c=24c=24 theories, including the 41 that were already known.Comment: 38 pages, CERN-TH.6478/9

    Classification of Ten-Dimensional Heterotic Strings

Progress towards the classification of the meromorphic c=24c=24 conformal field theories is reported. It is shown if such a theory has any spin-1 currents, it is either the Leech lattice CFT, or it can be written as a tensor product of Kac-Moody algebras with total central charge 24. The total number of combinations of Kac-Moody algebras for which meromorphic c=24c=24 theories may exist is 221. The next step towards classification is to obtain all modular invariant combinations of Kac-Moody characters. The presently available results are sufficient to obtain a complete list of all ten-dimensional heterotic strings. Furthermore there are strong indications for the existence of several (probably at least 20) new meromorphic c=24c=24 theories.Comment: 14 page

Formula for Fixed Point Resolution Matrix of Permutation Orbifolds

We find a formula for the resolution of fixed points in extensions of permutation orbifold conformal field theories by its (half-)integer spin simple currents. We show that the formula gives a unitary and modular invariant S matrix.Comment: 42 page

    Non-supersymmetric Orientifolds of Gepner Models

Starting from a previously collected set of tachyon-free closed strings, we search for N=2 minimal model orientifold spectra which contain the standard model and are free of tachyons and tadpoles at lowest order. For each class of tachyon-free closed strings -- bulk supersymmetry, automorphism invariants or Klein bottle projection -- we do indeed find non-supersymmetric and tachyon free chiral brane configurations that contain the standard model. However, a tadpole-cancelling hidden sector could only be found in the case of bulk supersymmetry. Although about half of the examples we have found make use of branes that break the bulk space-time supersymmetry, the resulting massless open string spectra are nevertheless supersymmetric in all cases. Dropping the requirement that the standard model be contained in the spectrum, we find chiral tachyon and tadpole-free solutions in all three cases, although in the case of bulk supersymmetry all massless spectra are supersymmetric. In the other two cases we find truly non-supersymmetric spectra, but a large fraction of them are nevertheless partly or fully supersymmetric at the massless level.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Classification of Simple Current Invariants

We summarize recent work on the classification of modular invariant partition functions that can be obtained with simple currents in theories with a center (Z_p)^k with p prime. New empirical results for other centers are also presented. Our observation that the total number of invariants is monodromy-independent for (Z_p)^k appears to be true in general as well.
