    New halo stars of the Galactic globular clusters M3 and M13 in the LAMOST DR1 Catalog

    M3 and M13 are Galactic globular clusters with previous reports of surrounding stellar halos. We present the results of a search for members and extratidal cluster halo stars within and outside of the tidal radius of these clusters in the LAMOST Data Release 1. We find seven candidate cluster members (inside the tidal radius) of both M3 and M13 respectively. In M3 we also identify eight candidate extratidal cluster halo stars at distances up to ~9.8 times the tidal radius, and in M13 we identify 12 candidate extratidal cluster halo stars at distances up to ~13.8 times the tidal radius. These results support previous indications that both M3 and M13 are surrounded by extended stellar halos, and we find that the GC destruction rates corresponding to the observed mass loss are generally significantly higher than theoretical studies predict.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures.     New cluster members and halo stars of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1851

    NGC 1851 is an intriguing Galactic globular cluster, with multiple stellar evolutionary sequences, light and heavy element abundance variations and indications of a surrounding stellar halo. We present the first results of a spectroscopic study of red giant stars within and outside of the tidal radius of this cluster. Our results identify nine probable new cluster members (inside the tidal radius) with heliocentric radial velocities consistent with that of NGC 1851. We also identify, based on their radial velocities, four probable extratidal cluster halo stars at distances up to ~3.1 times the tidal radius, which are supportive of previous findings that NGC 1851 is surrounded by an extended stellar halo. Proper motions were available for 12 of these 13 stars and all are consistent with that of NGC 1851. Apart from the cluster members and cluster halo stars, our observed radial velocity distribution agrees with the expected distribution from a Besancon disk/N-body stellar halo Milky Way model generated by the Galaxia code, suggesting that no other structures at different radial velocities are present in our field. The metallicities of these stars are estimated using equivalent width measurements of the near infrared calcium triplet absorption lines and are found, within the limitations of this method, to be consistent with that of NGC 1851. In addition we recover 110 red giant cluster members from previous studies based on their radial velocities and identify three stars with unusually high radial velocities.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures.     Nature as Spiritual Lived Experience: How Five Christian Theologians Encounter the Spirit In and Through the Natural World

    This qualitative study explored five Western Christian theologians’ religious lived experience of God’s Spirit in and through Nature. The hermeneutic phenomenological research method was utilized. Rich descriptions of lived experience were collected through 60-90 minute long phenomenological interviews which were recorded and transcribed verbatim into a text for analysis. Analysis included repeated readings of the text, identification of themes, and validation and/or correction of themes. Synthesis looked at the research as a whole and established implications and applications for Christian theology, particularly ecotheology. The study contributes to the literature of phenomenology and theology, calls for a place for lived experience (along with scripture, tradition, and reason) within theology, seeks to encourage theologians to incorporate into their work personal lived experiences of the divine in and through Nature, and ultimately hopes to illuminate one way to help inspire the church to more deeply embrace the healing of Earth as a moral responsibility. The research should be of particular interest to phenomenological scholars, other scholars looking at human relationship with the environment/natural world, professional theologians engaged in developing ecotheology, and students of Christian theology

    I elected to initiate dialogue with three Indigenous educational leaders and explore their experiences in educational leadership, the knowledge and strategies that they employed in pursuing objectives on behalf of their communities and how making tacit knowledge and skills visible supports the development of Indigenous educational leaders. Opportunity to reflect on their experiences illuminated their struggles and achievements and helped to tell the story of Indigenous participation in educational leadership. The bricolage (Kincheloe & Berry, 2004) conceptualizes research eclecticism useful as a lens for investigation. Parts of Western and Indigenous concepts were cobbled together into a methodology useful in exploring knowledge generated from the margins. The phenomenological practice of bracketing colonized narrative brings Indigenous contributions to the forefront. Heuristic research methods (Moustakas, 1990) provided a platform for learning that enlisted the experience of the researcher as a vehicle to personal reflection and new growth. The act of refashioning bits of Western methodologies into something useful for this decolonizing endeavour is an Indigenous act motivated by the conceptualization of the Trickster figure in Indigenous thought and tradition. The research participants drew on their foundational experiences to overcome the challenges of participating in mainstream education. Through their participation, they leveraged change through commitment, expertise and innovation. I was inspired by what they knew and did that was unique to their experience and how that knowledge and those skills could be mobilized to strengthen an Indigenous position in educational leadership. The product of this research is a liberating vision of Indigenous educational leadership useful in fostering more deliberate efforts in resistance, restructuring and reclaiming to ensure greater Indigenous participation in research, epistemology and educational practice

    The treatment of depression and simple phobia through an interpreter in the North East of England : a case study.

    A 35-year-old Middle Eastern woman, experiencing moderate depression compounded by animal phobia was referred to an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. Shared understandings were gradually developed using written functional analyses translated in session. Activity scheduling was integrated with graded exposure to increase access to positive reinforcement. Questionnaires and subjective data indicated a reduction in phobic avoidance and functioning increased. Despite the complexity of working as a triad, a positive therapeutic relationship was achieved with increased mutual cultural understanding. Indirect communication led to difficulties maintaining guided discovery and focus. There is limited evidence to support CBT when delivered through an interpreter. IAPT recommendations suggest staff reflect the community; the North East has one of the lowest foreign-born populations in the UK indicating that IAPT services may be ill prepared to work with ethnic minorities. Learning points for the therapist were: maintain simplicity, take time to formulate incorporation of cultural difference, and use transcultural interventions. The interpreter brought advantages; providing means of communication and understanding of cultural differences. Disadvantages were the potential for bias or lost information, increased time and complexity of delivering therapy. This case indicates a deficit in high intensity training and lack of literature to support therapists

    ESO452-SC11: The lowest mass globular cluster with a potential chemical inhomogeneity

    We present the largest spectroscopic investigation of one of the faintest and least studied stellar clusters of the Milky Way, ESO452-SC11. Using the Anglo-Australian Telescope AAOmega and Keck HIRES spectrographs we have identified 11 members of the cluster and found indications of star-to-star light element abundance variation, primarily using the blue cyanogen (CN) absorption features. From a stellar density profile, we estimate a total cluster mass of (6.8±3.4)×103(6.8\pm3.4)\times10^3 solar masses. This would make ESO452-SC11 the lowest mass cluster with evidence for multiple populations. These data were also used to measure the radial velocity of the cluster (16.7±0.316.7\pm0.3 km s−1^{-1}) and confirm that ESO452-SC11 is relatively metal-rich for a globular cluster ([Fe/H]=−0.81±0.13=-0.81\pm0.13). All known massive clusters studied in detail show multiple populations of stars each with a different chemical composition, but many low-mass globular clusters appear to be chemically homogeneous.
