The mean ionic charges of N, Ne, MG, SI and S in solar energetic particle events
The mean ionic charges of nitrogen, neon, magnesium, silicon, and sulfur in solar flare particle events were determined for 12 flares during the time interval from September 1978 to September 1979. The observations were carried out with the MPI/UoMd ULEZEQ Sensor on the ISEE-3 satellite comparing the results with mean charge states established in a hot coronal plasma under equilibrium conditions, different temperatures for different elements are discussed. These range from approx. 2 million K to 7 million K in a single flare. From flare to flare the variation in temperature for each element is less than the variation between different ion species
Spontaneous breaking of SU(3) to finite family symmetries: a pedestrian's approach
Non-Abelian discrete family symmetries play a pivotal role in the formulation
of models with tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. We discuss how to obtain symmetries
such as A4, semidirect product of Z7 and Z3, and Delta(27) from an underlying
SU(3) gauge symmetry. Higher irreducible representations are required to
achieve the spontaneous breaking of the continuous group. We present methods of
identifying the required vacuum alignments and discuss in detail the symmetry
breaking potentials.Comment: 21 page
Using Proximity and Tag Weights for Focused Retrieval in Structured Documents
International audienceFocused information retrieval is concerned with the retrieval of small units of information. In this context, the structure of the documents as well as the proximity among query terms have been found useful for improving retrieval effectiveness. In this article, we propose an approach combining the proximity of the terms and the tags which mark these terms. Our approach is based on a Fetch and Browse method where the fetch step is performed with BM25 and the browse step with a structure enhanced proximity model. In this way, the ranking of a document depends not only upon the existence of the query terms within the document but also upon the tags which mark these terms. Thus, the document tends to be highly relevant when query terms are close together and are emphasized by tags. The evaluation of this model on a large XML structured collection provided by the INEX 2010 XML IR evaluation campaign shows that the use of term proximity and structure improves the retrieval effectiveness of BM25 in the context of focused information retrieval
Non-Abelian Discrete Flavor Symmetries on Orbifolds
We study non-Abelian flavor symmetries on orbifolds, and .
Our extra dimensional models realize , , and
including and . In addition, one can also realize
their subgroups such as , , etc. The flavor symmetry can be
realized on both and orbifolds.Comment: 16 page
The Golden Ratio Prediction for the Solar Angle from a Natural Model with A5 Flavour Symmetry
We formulate a consistent model predicting, in the leading order
approximation, maximal atmospheric mixing angle, vanishing reactor angle and
tan {\theta}_12 = 1/{\phi} where {\phi} is the Golden Ratio. The model is based
on the flavour symmetry A5 \times Z5 \times Z3, spontaneously broken by a set
of flavon fields. By minimizing the scalar potential of the theory up to the
next-to-leading order in the symmetry breaking parameter, we demonstrate that
this mixing pattern is naturally achieved in a finite portion of the parameter
space, through the vacuum alignment of the flavon fields. The leading order
approximation is stable against higher-order corrections. We also compare our
construction to other models based on discrete symmetry groups.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures. Minor changes, references added. Corrected typos

Discrete symmetries and models of flavor mixing
Evidences of a discrete symmetry behind the pattern of lepton mixing are
analyzed. The program of "symmetry building" is outlined. Generic features and
problems of realization of this program in consistent gauge models are
formulated. The key issues include the flavor symmetry breaking, connection of
mixing and masses, {\it ad hoc} prescription of flavor charges, "missing"
representations, existence of new particles, possible accidental character of
the TBM mixing. Various ways are considered to extend the leptonic symmetries
to the quark sector and to reconcile them with Grand Unification. In this
connection the quark-lepton complementarity could be a viable alternative to
TBM. Observational consequences of the symmetries and future experimental tests
of their existence are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. Talk given at the Symposium "DISCRETE 2010", 6 -

Finite flavour groups of fermions
We present an overview of the theory of finite groups, with regard to their
application as flavour symmetries in particle physics. In a general part, we
discuss useful theorems concerning group structure, conjugacy classes,
representations and character tables. In a specialized part, we attempt to give
a fairly comprehensive review of finite subgroups of SO(3) and SU(3), in which
we apply and illustrate the general theory. Moreover, we also provide a concise
description of the symmetric and alternating groups and comment on the
relationship between finite subgroups of U(3) and finite subgroups of SU(3).
Though in this review we give a detailed description of a wide range of finite
groups, the main focus is on the methods which allow the exploration of their
different aspects.Comment: 89 pages, 6 figures, some references added, rearrangement of part of
the material, section on SU(3) subgroups substantially extended, some minor

Antibody-Dependent Natural Killer Cell Activation after Ebola Vaccination
BACKGROUND:Antibody Fc-mediated functions, such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, contribute to vaccine-induced protection against viral infections. Fc-mediated function of anti-Ebola glycoprotein antibodies suggest that Fc-dependent activation of effector cells, including NK cells, could play a role in vaccination against Ebola virus disease. METHODS:We analysed the effect of anti-Ebola glycoprotein antibody in the serum of U.K.-based volunteers vaccinated with the novel 2-dose heterologous Adenovirus type 26.ZEBOV, Modified Vaccinia Ankara-BN-Filo vaccine regimen, on primary human NK cell activation. RESULTS:We demonstrate primary human NK cell CD107a and IFN-γ expression, combined with downregulation of CD16, in response to recombinant Ebola virus glycoprotein and post-vaccine dose 1 and dose 2 sera. These responses varied significantly with vaccine regimen and NK cell activation was found to correlate with anti-glycoprotein antibody concentration. We also reveal an impact of NK cell differentiation phenotype on antibody-dependent NK cell activation, with highly differentiated CD56dimCD57+ NK cells being the most responsive. CONCLUSIONS:This study thus highlights the dual importance of vaccine-induced antibody concentration and NK cell differentiation status in promoting Fc-mediated activation of NK cells after vaccination, raising a potential role for antibody-mediated NK cell activation in vaccine-induced immune responses
Strong coupling, discrete symmetry and flavour
We show how two principles - strong coupling and discrete symmetry - can work
together to generate the flavour structure of the Standard Model. We propose
that in the UV the full theory has a discrete flavour symmetry, typically only
associated with tribimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector. Hierarchies in the
particle masses and mixing matrices then emerge from multiple strongly coupled
sectors that break this symmetry. This allows for a realistic flavour
structure, even in models built around an underlying grand unified theory. We
use two different techniques to understand the strongly coupled physics:
confinement in N=1 supersymmetry and the AdS/CFT correspondence. Both
approaches yield equivalent results and can be represented in a clear,
graphical way where the flavour symmetry is realised geometrically.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures, updated references and figure
