Proximity Effects and Nonequilibrium Superconductivity in Transition-Edge Sensors
We have recently shown that normal-metal/superconductor (N/S) bilayer TESs
(superconducting Transition-Edge Sensors) exhibit weak-link behavior.1 Here we
extend our understanding to include TESs with added noise-mitigating
normal-metal structures (N structures). We find TESs with added Au structures
also exhibit weak-link behavior as evidenced by exponential temperature
dependence of the critical current and Josephson-like oscillations of the
critical current with applied magnetic field. We explain our results in terms
of an effect converse to the longitudinal proximity effect (LoPE)1, the lateral
inverse proximity effect (LaiPE), for which the order parameter in the N/S
bilayer is reduced due to the neighboring N structures. Resistance and critical
current measurements are presented as a function of temperature and magnetic
field taken on square Mo/Au bilayer TESs with lengths ranging from 8 to 130
{\mu}m with and without added N structures. We observe the inverse proximity
effect on the bilayer over in-plane distances many tens of microns and find the
transition shifts to lower temperatures scale approximately as the inverse
square of the in- plane N-structure separation distance, without appreciable
broadening of the transition width. We also present evidence for nonequilbrium
superconductivity and estimate a quasiparticle lifetime of 1.8 \times 10-10 s
for the bilayer. The LoPE model is also used to explain the increased
conductivity at temperatures above the bilayer's steep resistive transition.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Observed Limits on Charge Exchange Contributions to the Diffuse X-ray Background
We present a high resolution spectrum of the diffuse X-ray background from
0.1 to 1 keV for a ~1 region of the sky centered at l=90, b=+60 using a
36-pixel array of microcalorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. With an energy
resolution of 11 eV FWHM below 1 keV, the spectrum's observed line ratios help
separate charge exchange contributions originating within the heliosphere from
thermal emission of hot gas in the interstellar medium. The X-ray sensitivity
below 1 keV was reduced by about a factor of four from contamination that
occurred early in the flight, limiting the significance of the results. The
observed centroid of helium-like O VII is 568+2-3 eV at 90% confidence. Since
the centroid expected for thermal emission is 568.4 eV while for charge
exchange is 564.2 eV, thermal emission appears to dominate for this line
complex, consistent with much of the high-latitude O VII emission originating
in 2-3 x 10^6 K gas in the Galactic halo. On the other hand, the observed ratio
of C VI Ly gamma to Ly alpha is 0.3+-0.2. The expected ratios are 0.04 for
thermal emission and 0.24 for charge exchange, indicating that charge exchange
must contribute strongly to this line and therefore potentially to the rest of
the ROSAT R12 band usually associated with 10^6 K emission from the Local Hot
Bubble. The limited statistics of this experiment and systematic uncertainties
due to the contamination require only >32% thermal emission for O VII and >20%
from charge exchange for C VI at the 90% confidence level. An experimental gold
coating on the silicon substrate of the array greatly reduced extraneous
signals induced on nearby pixels from cosmic rays passing through the
substrate, reducing the triggered event rate by a factor of 15 from a previous

Searching for keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter with X-ray Microcalorimeter Sounding Rockets
High-resolution X-ray spectrometers onboard suborbital sounding rockets can
search for dark matter candidates that produce X-ray lines, such as decaying
keV-scale sterile neutrinos. Even with exposure times and effective areas far
smaller than XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, high-resolution, wide
field-of-view observations with sounding rockets have competitive sensitivity
to decaying sterile neutrinos. We analyze a subset of the 2011 observation by
the X-ray Quantum Calorimeter instrument centered on Galactic coordinates l =
165, b = -5 with an effective exposure of 106 seconds, obtaining a limit on the
sterile neutrino mixing angle of sin^2(2 theta) < 7.2e-10 at 95% CL for a 7 keV
neutrino. Better sensitivity at the level of sin^2(2 theta) ~ 2.1e-11 at 95\%
CL for a 7 keV neutrino is achievable with future 300-second observations of
the galactic center by the Micro-X instrument, providing a definitive test of
the sterile neutrino interpretation of the reported 3.56 keV excess from galaxy

An Exploratory, Randomized, Crossover MRI Study of Microbicide Delivery with the SILCS Diaphragm Compared to a Vaginal Applicator
BackgroundâMicrobicide gels studied for HIV prevention often are delivered via a single-use vaginal applicator. Using a contraceptive diaphragm such as the SILCS diaphragm for gel delivery could have advantages, including lower cost and additional pregnancy prevention.
Study DesignâWe performed an exploratory, nonblinded, randomized, crossover study among healthy, sexually active, nonpregnant women. Using BufferGelÂź, we evaluated three microbicide delivery methods for gel distribution and retention: SILCS single-sided gel delivery, SILCS double-sided gel delivery and a vaginal applicator (without SILCS). Magnetic resonance images were taken at baseline, after gel insertion, and immediately and 6 h after simulated intercourse. Three women completed all gel delivery methods described in this article.
ResultsâMagnetic resonance imaging analysis indicated similar gel spread in the vagina among all three methods. SILCS single-sided gel application resulted in the most consistent longitudinal coverage; SILCS double-sided gel application was the most consistent in the transverse dimension.
ConclusionsâGel coverage was similar with all three methods. These results suggest that the SILCS microbicide delivery system is comparable to vaginal applicators for delivery of gel products intravaginally
Implementing a StateâAdopted High School Health Curriculum: A Case Study
BACKGROUNDThe Michigan Model for Healthâą (MMH) is the official health curriculum for the State of Michigan and prevailing policy and practice has encouraged its adoption. Delivering evidenceâbased programs such as MMH with fidelity is essential to program effectiveness. Yet, most schools do meet stateâdesignated fidelity requirements for implementation (delivering 80% or more of the curriculum).METHODSWe collected online survey (NÂ =Â 20) and inâperson interview (NÂ =Â 5) data investigating fidelity and factors related to implementation of the MMH curriculum from high school health teachers across high schools in one socioeconomically challenged Michigan county and key stakeholders.RESULTSWe found that 68% of teachers did not meet stateâidentified standards of fidelity for curriculum delivery. Our results indicate that factors related to the context and implementation processes (eg, trainings) may be associated with fidelity. Teachers reported barriers to program delivery, including challenges with adapting the curriculum to suit their context, competing priorities, and meeting studentsâ needs on key issues such as substance use and mental health issues.CONCLUSIONSMultiple factors influence the fidelity of health curriculum delivery in schools serving lowâincome students. Laboratory Measurements of the Dielectronic Recombination Satellite Transitions of He-Like FE XXV and H-Like FE XXVI
We present laboratory spectra of dielectronic recombination (DR) satellite transitions attached to the He-like and H-like iron resonance lines obtained with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center X-ray calorimeter and produced by a thermal plasma simu1ation technique on the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. We demonstrate that the calorimeter has sufficient spectral resolution in the 6-9 keV range to provide reliable measurements not only of standard DR satellite to resonance line intensities but also of DR satellite to DR satellite ratios that can be used to diagnose nonthermal electron distributions. Electron temperatures derived from the measured line intensities are consistent with the temperature of the simulated plasma. Temperature measurements based on DR satellite transitions have significant advantages over those based on collisional ionization equilibrium or continuum shape. Thus, successful demonstration of this method with the X-ray calorimeter is an important step fur its application in X-ray astronomy
Multiabsorber Transition-Edge Sensors for X-Ray Astronomy
We are developing arrays of position-sensitive microcalorimeters for future x-ray astronomy applications. These position-sensitive devices commonly referred to as hydras consist of multiple x-ray absorbers, each with a different thermal coupling to a single-transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter. Their development is motivated by a desire to achieve very large pixel arrays with some modest compromise in performance. We report on the design, optimization, and first results from devices with small pitch pixels (<75 m) being developed for a high-angular and energy resolution imaging spectrometer for Lynx. The Lynx x-ray space telescope is a flagship mission concept under study for the National Academy of Science 2020 decadal survey. Broadband full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) resolution measurements on a 9-pixel hydra have demonstrated E(FWHM) = 2.23 0.14 eV at Al-K, E(FWHM) = 2.44 0.29 eV at Mn-K, and E(FWHM) = 3.39 0.23 eV at Cu-K. Position discrimination is demonstrated to energies below <1 keV and the device performance is well-described by a finite-element model. Results from a prototype 20-pixel hydra with absorbers on a 50-m pitch have shown E(FWHM) = 3.38 0.20 eV at Cr-K1. We are now optimizing designs specifically for Lynx and extending the number of absorbers up to 25/hydra. Numerical simulation suggests optimized designs could achieve 3 eV while being compatible with the bandwidth requirements of the state-of-the art multiplexed readout schemes, thus making a 100,000 pixel microcalorimeter instrument a realistic goal
Gene Constellation of Influenza A Virus Reassortants with High Growth Phenotype Prepared as Seed Candidates for Vaccine Production
BACKGROUND: Influenza A virus vaccines undergo yearly reformulations due to the antigenic variability of the virus caused by antigenic drift and shift. It is critical to the vaccine manufacturing process to obtain influenza A seed virus that is antigenically identical to circulating wild type (wt) virus and grows to high titers in embryonated chicken eggs. Inactivated influenza A seasonal vaccines are generated by classical reassortment. The classical method takes advantage of the ability of the influenza virus to reassort based on the segmented nature of its genome. In ovo co-inoculation of a high growth or yield (hy) donor virus and a low yield wt virus with antibody selection against the donor surface antigens results in progeny viruses that grow to high titers in ovo with wt origin hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) glycoproteins. In this report we determined the parental origin of the remaining six genes encoding the internal proteins that contribute to the hy phenotype in ovo. METHODOLOGY: The genetic analysis was conducted using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The characterization was conducted to determine the parental origin of the gene segments (hy donor virus or wt virus), gene segment ratios and constellations. Fold increase in growth of reassortant viruses compared to respective parent wt viruses was determined by hemagglutination assay titers. SIGNIFICANCE: In this study fifty-seven influenza A vaccine candidate reassortants were analyzed for the presence or absence of correlations between specific gene segment ratios, gene constellations and hy reassortant phenotype. We found two gene ratios, 6:2 and 5:3, to be the most prevalent among the hy reassortants analyzed, although other gene ratios also conferred hy in certain reassortants
