Photometric redshifts for Quasars in multi band Surveys
MLPQNA stands for Multi Layer Perceptron with Quasi Newton Algorithm and it
is a machine learning method which can be used to cope with regression and
classification problems on complex and massive data sets. In this paper we give
the formal description of the method and present the results of its application
to the evaluation of photometric redshifts for quasars. The data set used for
the experiment was obtained by merging four different surveys (SDSS, GALEX,
UKIDSS and WISE), thus covering a wide range of wavelengths from the UV to the
mid-infrared. The method is able i) to achieve a very high accuracy; ii) to
drastically reduce the number of outliers and catastrophic objects; iii) to
discriminate among parameters (or features) on the basis of their significance,
so that the number of features used for training and analysis can be optimized
in order to reduce both the computational demands and the effects of
degeneracy. The best experiment, which makes use of a selected combination of
parameters drawn from the four surveys, leads, in terms of DeltaZnorm (i.e.
(zspec-zphot)/(1+zspec)), to an average of DeltaZnorm = 0.004, a standard
deviation sigma = 0.069 and a Median Absolute Deviation MAD = 0.02 over the
whole redshift range (i.e. zspec <= 3.6), defined by the 4-survey cross-matched
spectroscopic sample. The fraction of catastrophic outliers, i.e. of objects
with photo-z deviating more than 2sigma from the spectroscopic value is < 3%,
leading to a sigma = 0.035 after their removal, over the same redshift range.
The method is made available to the community through the DAMEWARE web

Steps toward a classifier for the Virtual Observatory. I. Classifying the SDSS photometric archive
Modern photometric multiband digital surveys produce large amounts of data
that, in order to be effectively exploited, need automatic tools capable to
extract from photometric data an objective classification. We present here a
new method for classifying objects in large multi-parametric photometric data
bases, consisting of a combination of a clustering algorithm and a cluster
agglomeration tool. The generalization capabilities and the potentialities of
this approach are tested against the complexity of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

CoQ10 and vitamin A supplementation support voice rehabilitation. A double-blind, randomized, controlled, three-period cross-over pilot study
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of an adjuvant therapy (CoQ10 in its watersoluble form and vitamin A) in supporting voice rehabilitation in a large group of patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). Study Design: Twelve-week, double-blind, randomized, controlled, three-period crossover pilot study. The primary endpoint was the change in the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) over the 12-week study period. Secondary endpoints were the changes in the subcomponents of DSI, including MPT, F0-high, I-low, and jitter. Exploratory endpoints were the changes in the Shimmer and in Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Methods: Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to two counter-balanced arms. Group A (ADJ-PLA) patients were administered QTer 300 mg and Vit A acetate 500.000 Ul/g 1 mg twice daily for a 4-week intervention period, followed by a 4-week period of wash-out, and then were submitted to a last 4-week period of placebo. Patients in Group B (PLB-ADJ) were given the treatment period in reverse order. Both groups received a 45-min voice therapy in a group format once a day for 4 weeks during the first and the second active periods. The therapy was held during the wash-out period. Results: The analysis of main time effect indicated a trend toward recovery of vocal function regardless of group assignment. A significant time by group effect was found on DSI [F = 3.4 (2.5, 80.5), p = 0.03], F0-high [F = 4.5 (2.6, 82.9), p = 0.008] and Shimmer [F = 3.6 (1.5, 46.9), p = 0.048], under CoQ10 and Vit A treatment, with a small effect size. There was no significant time by group effect on the other study measures, namely MPT, I-low, VHI. Conclusions: A trend toward recovery of vocal function was observed in all the patients, likely due to voice rehabilitation. The improvement of DSI was greater under CoQ10 and Vitamin treatment, indicating a more pronounced improvement of vocal quality under adjuvant therapy. Is the NZEB benchmarking approach suitable for assessing energy retrofit design?
Currently, many effort have been done to enable energy saving issues in building design
and many definitions have been introduced for most performing constructions based on energy
balance between energy demand and supply. Recently, the Net Zero Energy Building theory has
bypassed old Passive House concept but many questions still remain open. Present work aims to
estimate how NZEB requirements matching could be affected by the choice of their definition and the
choice of weighting factor system, to be count in the energy balance. NZEB concept is mainly
referred to new buildings design. Its application to existing buildings is for sure an hard task provided
the architecture and physical constraints are often problematic. Nevertheless, the benchmarking
approach able to assess the building performance according to the NZEB objective can be utilized for
other two purposes. The first one is to assess how an existing building is far from the performances of
a NZEB. The second one is to assess the contribution of a conventional retrofit in improving its
energy balance
Functional polymeric coatings for csi(Tl) scintillators
The handling of inorganic scintillators (e.g., alkali metal halides) can benefit from the availability of polymeric materials able to adhere to their surface. Polymeric materials, such as epoxy resins, can act as protective coatings, as adhesives for photodiodes to be connected with the scintillator surface, and as a matrix for functional fillers to improve the optical properties of scintillators. Here, the optical properties of two epoxy resins (E-30 by Prochima, and Technovit Epox by Heraeus Kulzer) deposited on the surface of a scintillator crystal made of CsI(Tl) were investigated, in order to improve the detection of high-energy radiation. It is found that these resins are capable of adhering to the surface of alkali metal halides. Adhesion, active at the epoxy–CsI(Tl) interface, can be explained on the basis of Coulomb forces acting between the ionic solid surface and an ionic intermediate of synthesis generated during the epoxy setting reaction. Technovit Epox showed higher transparency, and it was also functionalized by embedding white powdered pigments (PTFE or BaSO4) to achieve an optically reflective coating on the scintillator surface
Real-time monitoring of environmental radiation in Tunguska (Siberia)
[1] The results of the environmental radiation (ER) monitoring obtained during the Tunguska expedition of July 1999 with a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector are reported. Some interesting meteorological effects related to the airborne radioactive components (radon and thoron decay products) have been observed. The main effects observed are (1) the doubling of the ER during two quite different rain-out episodes and (2) a fairly regular diurnal wave in the intensity of the total radiation. The rain-out phenomenon allows us to approximate the timescale for the removal by precipitation of radioactivity from the air, while the wave phenomenon gives us the opportunity to develop a simplified model for estimating the time-averaged, dry weather surface radon concentration
Inside Catalogs: A Comparison of Source Extraction Software
The scope of this article is to compare the catalog extraction performances obtained using the new combination of SExtractor with PSFEx against the more traditional and diffuse application of DAOPHOT with ALLSTAR; therefore, the paper may provide a guide for the selection of the most suitable catalog extraction software. Both software packages were tested on two kinds of simulated images, having a uniform spatial distribution of sources and an overdensity in the center, respectively. In both cases, SExtractor is able to generate a deeper catalog than DAOPHOT. Moreover, the use of neural networks for object classification plus the novel SPREAD_MODEL parameter push down to the limiting magnitude the possibility of star/galaxy separation. DAOPHOT and ALLSTAR provide an optimal solution for point-source photometry in stellar fields and very accurate and reliable PSF photometry, with robust star/galaxy separation. However, they are not useful for galaxy characterization and do not generate catalogs that are very complete for faint sources. On the other hand, SExtractor, along with the new capability to derive PSF photometry, turns out to be competitive and returns accurate photometry for galaxies also. We can report that the new version of SExtractor, used in conjunction with PSFEx, represents a very powerful software package for source extraction with performances comparable to those of DAOPHOT. Finally, by comparing the results obtained in the cases of a uniform and of an overdense spatial distribution of stars, we notice for both software packages a decline for the latter case in the quality of the results produced in terms of magnitudes and centroids
