Fusion of radioactive Sn with Ni
Evaporation residue and fission cross sections of radioactive Sn on
Ni were measured near the Coulomb barrier. A large sub-barrier fusion
enhancement was observed. Coupled-channel calculations including inelastic
excitation of the projectile and target, and neutron transfer are in good
agreement with the measured fusion excitation function. When the change in
nuclear size and shift in barrier height are accounted for, there is no extra
fusion enhancement in Sn+Ni with respect to stable Sn+Ni.
A systematic comparison of evaporation residue cross sections for the fusion of
even Sn and Sn with Ni is presented.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Reactions of a Be-10 beam on proton and deuteron targets
The extraction of detailed nuclear structure information from transfer
reactions requires reliable, well-normalized data as well as optical potentials
and a theoretical framework demonstrated to work well in the relevant mass and
beam energy ranges. It is rare that the theoretical ingredients can be tested
well for exotic nuclei owing to the paucity of data. The halo nucleus Be-11 has
been examined through the 10Be(d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics at
equivalent deuteron energies of 12,15,18, and 21.4 MeV. Elastic scattering of
Be-10 on protons was used to select optical potentials for the analysis of the
transfer data. Additionally, data from the elastic and inelastic scattering of
Be-10 on deuterons was used to fit optical potentials at the four measured
energies. Transfers to the two bound states and the first resonance in Be-11
were analyzed using the Finite Range ADiabatic Wave Approximation (FR-ADWA).
Consistent values of the spectroscopic factor of both the ground and first
excited states were extracted from the four measurements, with average values
of 0.71(5) and 0.62(4) respectively. The calculations for transfer to the first
resonance were found to be sensitive to the size of the energy bin used and
therefore could not be used to extract a spectroscopic factor.Comment: 16 Pages, 10 figure
Breakup of F on Pb near the Coulomb barrier
Angular distributions of oxygen produced in the breakup of F incident
on a Pb target have been measured around the grazing angle at beam
energies of 98 and 120 MeV. The data are dominated by the proton stripping
mechanism and are well reproduced by dynamical calculations. The measured
breakup cross section is approximately a factor of 3 less than that of fusion
at 98 MeV. The influence of breakup on fusion is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Twinsol: A dual superconducting solenoid system for low-energy radioactive nuclear beam research
A unique type of apparatus is currently under construction as part of an upgrade to the radioactive ion beam facility at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Structure Laboratory. The device will consist of a pair of large in-line superconducting solenoids (B0 = 6 tesla,B0=6tesla, bore=30 cmbore=30cm) which will be used to produce, collect, transport, focus and analyze both stable and radioactive nuclear beams. This apparatus in conjunction with the recently upgraded accelerators at Notre Dame is especially well suited for the production and utilization of intense (viz. >106/sec>106/sec), low-energy (1–10 MeV/u), stable and radioactive nuclear beams relevant to the study of reactions involved in astrophysical processes. These improvements will allow for the production of radioactive beams of greater intensity, higher purity and at both higher and lower energies than previously available at this facility. Protein dynamics with off-lattice Monte Carlo moves
A Monte Carlo method for dynamics simulation of all-atom protein models is
introduced, to reach long times not accessible to conventional molecular
dynamics. The considered degrees of freedom are the dihedrals at
C-atoms. Two Monte Carlo moves are used: single rotations about
torsion axes, and cooperative rotations in windows of amide planes, changing
the conformation globally and locally, respectively. For local moves Jacobians
are used to obtain an unbiased distribution of dihedrals. A molecular dynamics
energy function adapted to the protein model is employed. A polypeptide is

Experimental determination of the surface density for the 6He exotic nucleus
Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of 4,6He on 58Ni have been measured at near-barrier energies.
The present data, combined with others for the 4He158Ni system at intermediate energies, allowed the
determination of the 4,6He ground-state nuclear densities through an unfolding method. The experimentally
extracted nuclear densities are compared with the results of theoretical calculations
PATHOGEN-SPECIFIC ANTIBODY PROFILES IN PATIENTS WITH SEVERE SYSTEMIC INFECTIONS
Infections are often caused by pathobionts, endogenous bacteria that belong to the microbiota. Trauma and surgical intervention can allow bacteria to overcome host defences, ultimately leading to sepsis if left untreated. One of the main defence strategies of the immune system is the production of highly specific antibodies. In the present proof-of-concept study, plasma antibodies against 9 major pathogens were measured in sepsis patients, as an example of severe systemic infections. The binding of plasma antibodies to bacterial extracellular proteins was quantified using a semi-automated immunoblot assay. Comparison of the pathogen-specific antibody levels before and after infection showed an increase in plasma IgG in 20 out of 37 tested patients. This host-directed approach extended the results of pathogen-oriented microbiological and PCR diagnostics: a specific antibody response to additional bacteria was frequently observed, indicating unrecognised poly-microbial invasion. This might explain some cases of failed, seemingly targeted antibiotic treatment
