On the role of shake-off in single-photon double ionization
The role of shake-off for double ionization of atoms by a single photon with
finite energy has become the subject of debate. In this letter, we attempt to
clarify the meaning of shake-off at low photon energies by comparing different
formulations appearing in the literature and by suggesting a working
definition. Moreover, we elaborate on the foundation and justification of a
mixed quantum-classical ansatz for the calculation of single-photon double
ionization
Role of dynamical particle-vibration coupling in reconciliation of the puzzle for spherical proton emitters
It has been observed that decay rate for proton emission from
single particle state is systematically quenched compared with the prediction
of a one dimensional potential model although the same model successfully
accounts for measured decay rates from and states. We
reconcile this discrepancy by solving coupled-channels equations, taking into
account couplings between the proton motion and vibrational excitations of a
daughter nucleus. We apply the formalism to proton emitting nuclei
Re to show that there is a certain range of parameter set of the
excitation energy and the dynamical deformation parameter for the quadrupole
phonon excitation which reproduces simultaneously the experimental decay rates
from the 2, 3 and 1 states in these nuclei.Comment: RevTex, 12 pages, 4 eps figure
An efficient Fredholm method for calculation of highly excited states of billiards
A numerically efficient Fredholm formulation of the billiard problem is
presented. The standard solution in the framework of the boundary integral
method in terms of a search for roots of a secular determinant is reviewed
first. We next reformulate the singularity condition in terms of a flow in the
space of an auxiliary one-parameter family of eigenproblems and argue that the
eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are analytic functions within a certain domain.
Based on this analytic behavior we present a numerical algorithm to compute a
range of billiard eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors by only two
diagonalizations.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; included systematic study of accuracy with 2

Tri-axial Octupole Deformations and Shell Structure
Manifestations of pronounced shell effects are discovered when adding
nonaxial octupole deformations to a harmonic oscillator model. The degeneracies
of the quantum spectra are in a good agreement with the corresponding main
periodic orbits and winding number ratios which are found by classical
analysis.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 4 postscript figures, to appear in JETP Letter
Time-dependent properties of proton decay from crossing single-particle metastable states in deformed nuclei
A dynamical study of the decay of a metastable state by quantum tunneling
through an anisotropic, non separable, two-dimensional potential barrier is
performed by the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation.
Initial quasi- stationary proton states are chosen in the framework of a
deformed Woods-Saxon single-particle model. The decay of two sets of states
corresponding to true and quasi levels-crossing is studied and the evolution of
their decay properties as a function of nuclear deformation is calculated
around the crossing point. The results show that the investigation of the
proton decay from metastable states in deformed nuclei can unambiguously
distinguish between the two types of crossing and determine the structure of
the nuclear states involved.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Nearby Doorways, Parity Doublets and Parity Mixing in Compound Nuclear States
We discuss the implications of a doorway state model for parity mixing in
compound nuclear states. We argue that in order to explain the tendency of
parity violating asymmetries measured in Th to have a common sign,
doorways that contribute to parity mixing must be found in the same energy
neighbourhood of the measured resonance. The mechanism of parity mixing in this
case of nearby doorways is closely related to the intermediate structure
observed in nuclear reactions in which compound states are excited. We note
that in the region of interest (Th) nuclei exhibit octupole
deformations which leads to the existence of nearby parity doublets. These
parity doublets are then used as doorways in a model for parity mixing. The
contribution of such mechanism is estimated in a simple model.Comment: 11 pages, REVTE
Many-body approach to proton emission and the role of spectroscopic factors
The process of proton emission from nuclei is studied by utilizing the
two-potential approach of Gurvitz and Kalbermann in the context of the full
many-body problem. A time-dependent approach is used for calculating the decay
width. Starting from an initial many-body quasi-stationary state, we employ the
Feshbach projection operator approach and reduce the formalism to an effective
one-body problem. We show that the decay width can be expressed in terms of a
one-body matrix element multiplied by a normalization factor. We demonstrate
that the traditional interpretation of this normalization as the square root of
a spectroscopic factor is only valid for one particular choice of projection
operator. This causes no problem for the calculation of the decay width in a
consistent microscopic approach, but it leads to ambiguities in the
interpretation of experimental results. In particular, spectroscopic factors
extracted from a comparison of the measured decay width with a calculated
single-particle width may be affected.Comment: 17 pages, Revte
Chaos in Axially Symmetric Potentials with Octupole Deformation
Classical and quantum mechanical results are reported for the single particle
motion in a harmonic oscillator potential which is characterized by a
quadrupole deformation and an additional octupole deformation. The chaotic
character of the motion is srongly dependent on the quadrupole deformation in
that for a prolate deformation virtually no chaos is discernible while for the
oblate case the motion shows strong chaos when the octupole term is turned on.Comment: 6 pages LaTex plus 4 figures available by contacting the authors

Semiclassical description of shell effects in finite fermion systems
A short survey of the semiclassical periodic orbit theory, initiated by M.
Gutzwiller and generalized by many other authors, is given. Via so-called
semiclassical trace formmulae, gross-shell effects in bound fermion systems can
be interpreted in terms of a few periodic orbits of the corresponding classical
systems. In integrable systems, these are usually the shortest members of the
most degenerate families or orbits, but in some systems also less degenerate
orbits can determine the gross-shell structure. Applications to nuclei, metal
clusters, semiconductor nanostructures, and trapped dilute atom gases are
discussed.Comment: LaTeX (revteX4) 6 pages; invited talk at Int. Conference "Finite
