Gene-Environment Interaction Research and Transgenic Mouse Models of Alzheimer's Disease

The etiology of the sporadic form of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains largely unknown. Recent evidence has suggested that gene-environment interactions (GxE) may play a crucial role in its development and progression. Whereas various susceptibility loci have been identified, like the apolipoprotein E4 allele, these cannot fully explain the increasing prevalence of AD observed with aging. In addition to such genetic risk factors, various environmental factors have been proposed to alter the risk of developing AD as well as to affect the rate of cognitive decline in AD patients. Nevertheless, aside from the independent effects of genetic and environmental risk factors, their synergistic participation in increasing the risk of developing AD has been sparsely investigated, even though evidence points towards such a direction. Advances in the genetic manipulation of mice, modeling various aspects of the AD pathology, have provided an excellent tool to dissect the effects of genes, environment, and their interactions. In this paper we present several environmental factors implicated in the etiology of AD that have been tested in transgenic animal models of the disease. The focus lies on the concept of GxE and its importance in a multifactorial disease like AD. Additionally, possible mediating mechanisms and future challenges are discussed

Methodology of Application of Modern Educational Technologies for Training Specialists

This paper discusses the methodology of applying modern educational technologies for training specialists in the field of metallurgical production based on the CDIO initiative. In order to expand the possibilities of the practice-orientedness of specialists, practical training is used to solve real problems and conditions of enterprise activity with the help of applied and specialized software products and the project method. The organizational and structural principles of the project method implementation are shown.В данной работе рассмотрена методология применения современных образовательных технологий для подготовки специалистов в сфере металлургического производства на основе инициативы CDIO. С целью расширения возможностей практико-ориентированности специалистов применяется практическая подготовка для решения реальных проблем и условий деятельности предприятий с помощью прикладных и специализированных программных продуктов и метода проектов. Тому метою статті є поглиблений аналіз особливостей та змісту інформаційного суверенітету як складової частини державного суверенітету, його взаємозв'язку зі свободою інформації та інформаційною безпекою, а також характеристика підстав та напрямів забезпечення інформаційного суверенітету.In the context of globalization of information processes, the prevalence of information wars and terrorism, there are new threats to national interests in the information sphere, which actualizes providing the information sovereignty of modern states. Therefore, the purpose of the article is an in-depth analysis of the features and content of information sovereignty as a component of state sovereignty, its relationship with freedom of information and information security, as well as a characterization of the bases and directions of providing informat ion sovereignty. The information sovereignty of the modern state includes its activities to determine national interests in the information sphere, the formation and implementation of information policy, providing information security, regulation and control of information processes. The realization of information sovereignty should be based on real freedom of information, information privacy and the state obligation to provide them. Ensuring information sovereignty also requires solving the problems of formation of modern information legislation, which would comprehensively establish the bases and directions of providing information sovereignty, exceptional cases of restriction of freedom of information.В условиях глобализации информационных процессов, распространения информационных войн и терроризма возникают новые угрозы национальным интересам в информационной сфере, что актуализирует обеспечение информационного суверенитета современных государств. Поэтому целью статьи является углубленный анализ особенностей и содержания информационного суверенитета как составной части государственного суверенитета, его взаимосвязи со свободой информации и информационной безопасностью, а также характеристика оснований и направлений обеспечения информационного суверенитета

Mosquitoes LTR Retrotransposons: A Deeper View into the Genomic Sequence of Culex quinquefasciatus

A set of 67 novel LTR-retrotransposon has been identified by in silico analyses of the Culex quinquefasciatus genome using the LTR_STRUC program. The phylogenetic analysis shows that 29 novel and putatively functional LTR-retrotransposons detected belong to the Ty3/gypsy group. Our results demonstrate that, by considering only families containing potentially autonomous LTR-retrotransposons, they account for about 1% of the genome of C. quinquefasciatus. In previous studies it has been estimated that 29% of the genome of C. quinquefasciatus is occupied by mobile genetic elements

The influence of solid state information and descriptor selection on statistical models of temperature dependent aqueous solubility.

Predicting the equilibrium solubility of organic, crystalline materials at all relevant temperatures is crucial to the digital design of manufacturing unit operations in the chemical industries. The work reported in our current publication builds upon the limited number of recently published quantitative structure-property relationship studies which modelled the temperature dependence of aqueous solubility. One set of models was built to directly predict temperature dependent solubility, including for materials with no solubility data at any temperature. We propose that a modified cross-validation protocol is required to evaluate these models. Another set of models was built to predict the related enthalpy of solution term, which can be used to estimate solubility at one temperature based upon solubility data for the same material at another temperature. We investigated whether various kinds of solid state descriptors improved the models obtained with a variety of molecular descriptor combinations: lattice energies or 3D descriptors calculated from crystal structures or melting point data. We found that none of these greatly improved the best direct predictions of temperature dependent solubility or the related enthalpy of solution endpoint. This finding is surprising because the importance of the solid state contribution to both endpoints is clear. We suggest our findings may, in part, reflect limitations in the descriptors calculated from crystal structures and, more generally, the limited availability of polymorph specific data. We present curated temperature dependent solubility and enthalpy of solution datasets, integrated with molecular and crystal structures, for future investigations
