    A CAUSAL HIERARCHICAL MARKOV FRAMEWORK FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF MULTIRESOLUTION AND MULTISENSOR REMOTE SENSING IMAGES

    Abstract. In this paper, a multiscale Markov framework is proposed in order to address the problem of the classification of multiresolution and multisensor remotely sensed data. The proposed framework makes use of a quadtree to model the interactions across different spatial resolutions and a Markov model with respect to a generic total order relation to deal with contextual information at each scale in order to favor applicability to very high resolution imagery. The methodological properties of the proposed hierarchical framework are investigated. Firstly, we prove the causality of the overall proposed model, a particularly advantageous property in terms of computational cost of the inference. Secondly, we prove the expression of the marginal posterior mode criterion for inference on the proposed framework. Within this framework, a specific algorithm is formulated by defining, within each layer of the quadtree, a Markov chain model with respect to a pixel scan that combines both a zig-zag trajectory and a Hilbert space-filling curve. Data collected by distinct sensors at the same spatial resolution are fused through gradient boosted regression trees. The developed algorithm was experimentally validated with two very high resolution datasets including multispectral, panchromatic and radar satellite images. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm as compared to previous techniques based on alternate approaches to multiresolution fusion

    Stereotyping human-like virtual influencers in retailing: Does warmth prevail over competence?

    Building upon the Stereotype Content Model (SCM), the current research provides insights into how virtual influencers (VIs) influence consumer responses. More specifically, it investigates the associations between the VI's anthropomorphism and stereotypical judgments of the VI's warmth and competence as well as the differential and mediating roles of these stereotypes in influencing consumers' willingness to follow the VI's recommendations and purchase intentions. The results support the idea that anthropomorphizing VIs has a direct bearing on stereotyping VIs along the competence and warmth dimensions of the SCM. Consistent with the “Primacy-of-Warmth Effect” hypothesis, the study's findings show that perceived warmth, compared to perceived competence, is positively more associated with consumers' willingness to follow the VI's recommendations. Furthermore, the findings reveal that perceived warmth mediates the association between the VI's anthropomorphism and consumers' willingness to follow the VI's recommendations. However, the findings lend partial support to the mediating role of competence. The willingness to follow the VI's recommendations, in turn, is positively associated with purchase intention.     Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology of Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous Strata of Western Laurentia (North America): A Record of Transition from Passive to Convergent Margin

    AbstractThe Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous (DC) Antler orogeny in southwestern Laurentia is contemporaneous with influx of clastic sediments, unconformities, and volcanism across much of western Laurentia (WL), suggesting the demise of the Paleozoic passive margin. However beyond the type Antler orogeny in southwestern Laurentia, the DC tectonic setting is still unclear. Westerly sediment provenance has been suggested as evidence of a convergent margin setting in a foreland basin. However, there is a gap in our understanding in central WL (Alberta and Montana) despite the fact that paleogeographic reconstructions place this area at the centre of WL. We provide detrital zircon (DZ) U-Pb geochronological data from strata in Alberta, Montana, and Nevada that are synchronous with the Antler orogeny to constrain sediment dispersal patterns and test the westerly sediment sourcing hypothesis. We show three DZ facies specific to particular geographic locations: DZ facies 1 in southern Nevada has a prominent subpopulation of early to mid-Mesoproterozoic (mode at 1430 Ma), DZ facies 2 in northeastern Nevada has a late Paleoproterozoic population (mode at 1823 Ma), and DZ facies 3 in Alberta and Montana displays Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic (mode at 1036 Ma), mid-Paleozoic (mode at 411 Ma), and depositional (ca. 360-340 Ma) ages. North-south variation in DZ facies indicates that WL basins were locally sourced from various tectonic fragments having different signatures. Comparing our data with published data, we show that WL is dominated by DZ recycled from uplifted older strata with input from mid-Paleozoic arc terrane (s) to the west. Westerly sourcing is evidenced by the presence of near-depositional ages and affinities of this study’s DZ facies with strata located to the west. Our results and geological evidence from other studies suggest that the Antler orogeny triggered a depositional shift and controlled sediments dispersal in WL, signaling the demise of the Paleozoic passive margin

    The Annexin A2/S100A10 System in Health and Disease: Emerging Paradigms

    Since its discovery as a src kinase substrate more than three decades ago, appreciation for the physiologic functions of annexin A2 and its associated proteins has increased dramatically. With its binding partner S100A10 (p11), A2 forms a cell surface complex that regulates generation of the primary fibrinolytic protease, plasmin, and is dynamically regulated in settings of hemostasis and thrombosis. In addition, the complex is transcriptionally upregulated in hypoxia and promotes pathologic neoangiogenesis in the tissues such as the retina. Dysregulation of both A2 and p11 has been reported in examples of rodent and human cancer. Intracellularly, A2 plays a critical role in endosomal repair in postarthroplastic osteolysis, and intracellular p11 regulates serotonin receptor activity in psychiatric mood disorders. In human studies, the A2 system contributes to the coagulopathy of acute promyelocytic leukemia, and is a target of high-titer autoantibodies in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome, cerebral thrombosis, and possibly preeclampsia. Polymorphisms in the human ANXA2 gene have been associated with stroke and avascular osteonecrosis of bone, two severe complications of sickle cell disease. Together, these new findings suggest that manipulation of the annexin A2/S100A10 system may offer promising new avenues for treatment of a spectrum of human disorders

    Vaccine Platforms Combining Circumsporozoite Protein and Potent Immune Modulators, rEA or EAT-2, Paradoxically Result in Opposing Immune Responses

    Malaria greatly impacts the health and wellbeing of over half of the world's population. Promising malaria vaccine candidates have attempted to induce adaptive immune responses to Circumsporozoite (CS) protein. Despite the inclusion of potent adjuvants, these vaccines have limited protective efficacy. Conventional recombinant adenovirus (rAd) based vaccines expressing CS protein can induce CS protein specific immune responses, but these are essentially equivalent to those generated after use of the CS protein subunit based vaccines. In this study we combined the use of rAds expressing CS protein along with rAds expressing novel innate immune response modulating proteins in an attempt to significantly improve the induction of CS protein specific cell mediated immune (CMI) responses.BALB/cJ mice were co-vaccinated with a rAd vectors expressing CS protein simultaneous with a rAd expressing either TLR agonist (rEA) or SLAM receptors adaptor protein (EAT-2). Paradoxically, expression of the TLR agonist uncovered a potent immunosuppressive activity inherent to the combined expression of the CS protein and rEA. Fortunately, use of the rAd vaccine expressing EAT-2 circumvented CS protein's suppressive activity, and generated a fivefold increase in the number of CS protein responsive, IFNγ secreting splenocytes, as well as increased the breadth of T cells responsive to peptides present in the CS protein. These improvements were positively correlated with the induction of a fourfold improvement in CS protein specific CTL functional activity in vivo.Our results emphasize the need for caution when incorporating CS protein into malaria vaccine platforms expressing or containing other immunostimulatory compounds, as the immunological outcomes may be unanticipated and/or counter-productive. However, expressing the SLAM receptors derived signaling adaptor EAT-2 at the same time of vaccination with CS protein can overcome these concerns, as well as significantly improve the induction of malaria antigen specific adaptive immune responses in vivo

    Bipolar disorders

    Bipolar disorder is characterized by (hypo)manic episodes and depressive episodes which alternate with euthymic periods. It causes serious disability with poor outcome, increased suicidality risk, and significant societal costs. This chapter describes the findings of the PET/SPECT research efforts and the current ideas on the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. First, the cerebral blood flow and cerebral metabolism findings in the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, subcortical structures, and other brain regions are discussed, followed by an overview of the corticolimbic theory of mood disorders that explains these observations. Second, the neurotransmitter studies are discussed. The serotonin transporter alterations are described, and the variation in study results is explained, followed by an overview of the results of the various dopamine receptor and transporter molecules studies, taking into account also the relation to psychosis. Third, a concise overview is given of dominant bipolar disorder pathophysiological models, proposing starting points for future molecular imaging studies. Finally, the most important conclusions are summarized, followed by remarks about the observed molecular imaging study designs specific for bipolar disorder.</p

    The effects of app-related factors on app stickiness: The role of cognitive and emotional app relationship quality

    Prior research tends to examine the effect of a narrow set of app-related factors on the construct of app relationship quality holistically. However, it is well-established that app relationship quality consists of cognitive and emotional aspects. To address these two issues, our study takes a more nuanced approach by examining a comprehensive set of app-related factors, including functional, offerings, experiential and relational factors, and their differential impacts on two distinct components of app relationship quality, namely cognitive app relationship quality (CARQ) and emotional app relationship quality (EARQ). It also examines the differential impact of CARQ and EARQ on app stickiness, which has long been considered as a managerial challenge. A ‘modular design approach’ was used to collect the data from an online UK consumer panel. 605 responses were analyzed using AMOS 24. The results indicated that functional and offering factors produced greater effects on CARQ than on EARQ. In contrast, experiential and relational factors were found to have stronger effects on EARQ than on CARQ. Further, CARQ was found to have a stronger effect on app stickiness compared to EARQ. The current study offers a detailed understanding of the factors that contribute to each component of app relationship quality and empirically demonstrates the differential effects of the cognitive and emotional aspects on app sickness. Such results are expected to help e-retailers to develop a strong digital presence, build future readiness for their brands, and design app-focused strategies using a consumer centric approach

    Human hydatidosis is endemic in regions with temperate climate where pastoral farming is common.It is frequent in the southern shore of the Mediterranean, particularly in the Maghreb countries. It remains asymptomatic for long period, and the diagnosis is often delayed. The most affected organs are the liver and lungs. Hydatic disease of the urinary tract is an unusual entity.Our case concerns multiple unusual locations of hydatic disease in the urinary tract, including renal, retrovesical and spermatic cord, associated with splenic and intraperitoneal locations. Coexistence of hydatic cysts in such locations of urinary tract has not been previously reported
