Poly(vinyl alcohol)-hyaluronic Acid Membranes for Wound Dressing Applications: Synthesis and in vitro Bio-Evaluations

    No full text
Physically crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)-hyaluronic acid (PVA-HA) hydrogel membranes composed of different amounts of HA were prepared by freeze-thawing (F-T) method. F-T cycle was repeated for three consecutive cycles. HA was chosen and routinely utilized in the local treatment of chronic wounds, because of its advantages as, HA is endogenous and biodegradable polymer. Physicochemical properties of PVA-HA membranes such as, gel fraction (GF), swelling, mechanical properties, hydrolytic degradation and in vitro bio-evaluation tests were investigated. Results revealed that introducing HA into PVA structure affected significantly the physicochemical properties of membranes than the pristine PVA, because of its crosslinking interaction with PVA. With the increase of HA content in PVA hydrogel membranes, GF and mechanical stability of PVA-HA membranes decreased. However, the swelling behavior, mechanical flexibility, protein adsorption and hydrolytic degradation of PVA membrane increased. The HA content < 20% in PVA hydrogels showed high cell viability (%) and no toxicity was observed using microculture tetrazolium assay (MTT-assay). However, less cell viability was determined with high HA incorporation. PVA-HA-ampicillin free showed antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans as a result of HA presence. Thus, ampicillin-loaded wound dressing with PVA-HA membranes could be used as promising materials with easy forming and biologically evaluated for wound care

Halawa AH, Eliwa EM, Hassan AA, et al. Synthesis, in vitro cytotoxicity activity against the human cervix carcinoma cell line and in silico computational predictions of new 4-arylamino-3-nitrocoumarin analogues. JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR STRUCTURE. 2020;1200: UNSP 127047.A new series of 4-arylamino-3-nitrocoumarin analogues (4-18) have been synthesized and characterized by sophisticated spectroscopic techniques (H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR) and mass spectrometry. All the new synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against the human cervix carcinoma cell line (KB-3-1) using resazurin assay with (+)-griseofulvin as the positive control (IC50 = 19 mu M). Among them, thiazolidinylidene derivative 17a that bearing malononitrile unit displayed the best cytotoxic potency with IC50 value of 21 mu M. Also, in silico docking simulation studies were conducted on human DNA topoisomerase 1 (Top1) (PDB: 1T8I) to explore and interpret the interaction pattern between the selected compounds and target enzyme as well confirm the acquired cytotoxicity results. In addition to the above, in silico predictions of physicochemical properties, ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion) parameters, oral toxicity and indication of toxicity targets were implemented for some title compounds. AbstractA series of 1H-benzo[f]chromene moieties (4a–z) were synthesised under Ultrasonic irradiation and confirmed with spectral analyses. Derivative 4i solely possessed an X-ray single crystal. The anti-proliferative efficacy of the desired molecules has been explored against three cancer cells: MCF-7, HCT-116, and HepG-2 with the cytotoxically active derivatives screened against MCF-7/ADR and normal cells HFL-1 and WI-38. Furthermore, compounds 4b–d, 4k, 4n, 4q, and 4w, which possessed good potency against MCF-7/ADR, were tested as permeability glycoprotein (P-glycoprotein [P-gp]) expression inhibitors. The attained data confirmed that 4b–d, 4q, and 4w exhibited strong expression inhibition against the P-gp alongside its cytotoxic effect on MCF-7/ADR. The western blot results and Rho123 accumulation assays showed that compounds 4b–d, 4q, and 4w effectively inhibited the P-gp expression and efflux function. Meanwhile, 4b–d, 4q, and 4w induced apoptosis and accumulation of the treated MCF-7/ADR cells in the G1 phase and 4k and 4n in the S phase of the cell cycle

β-Enaminonitriles bearing 9-hydroxy-1H-benzo[f]chromene moiety was synthesized. The targeted compounds were evaluated for their anti-proliferative activity against three human tumor cell lines, PC-3, SKOV-3 and HeLa, and the active cytotoxic compounds were further evaluated against cancer cells, MCF-7/ADR, and two normal cell lines, HFL-1 and WI-38. Few compounds were assigned to be the most potent derivatives against PC-3, SKOV-3 and HeLa cell lines in comparison with Vinblastine and Doxorubicin. Several compounds possessed a relatively good potency against MCF-7/ADR cells as compared with Doxorubicin and were tested as a P-gp inhibitor. Moreover, the halogenated substituents, 2,4-F2, 2,3-Cl2, 2,5-Cl2 and 3,4-Cl2; have good potency against P-gp-mediated MDR in MCF-7/ADR as compared with Doxorubicin. Meanwhile, Rho123 accumulation assays revealed that few compounds effectively inhibited P-pg and efflux function. In addition, certain derivatives induced apoptosis and an accumulation of the treated MCF-7/ADR cells in the G1, S and G1/S phases

On the evenings of June 11 and 12, 2019, 5 and 6 days before full moon, broadcast spawning by four echinoderm species and two mollusc species was observed on the Marsa Shagra reef, Egypt (25° 14′ 44.2" N, 34° 47′ 49.0" E). Water temperature was 28 °C and the invertebrates were observed at 2–8 m depth. The sightings included a single basket star Astroboa nuda (Lyman 1874), 2 large Tectus dentatus (Forskal 1775) sea snails, 14 individuals of the Leiaster cf. leachi (Gray 1840) sea star and 1 Mithrodia clavigera (Lamarck 1816) sea star, 3 Pearsonothuria graefei (Semper 1868) sea cucumbers, and 2 giant clams, Tridacna maxima (Röding 1798). The observations presented here provide relevant information on broadcast spawning of non-coral invertebrate taxa in the Red Sea, where spawning is considerably less well documented than in other tropical geographical regions such as the Indo-Pacifc and Caribbean.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Throughput assurance of wireless body area networks coexistence based on stochastic geometry

Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are expected to influence the traditional medical model by assisting caretakers with health telemonitoring. Within WBANs, the transmit power of the nodes should be as small as possible owing to their limited energy capacity but should be sufficiently large to guarantee the quality of the signal at the receiving nodes. When multiple WBANs coexist in a small area, the communication reliability and overall throughput can be seriously affected due to resource competition and interference. We show that the total network throughput largely depends on the WBANs distribution density (λp), transmit power of their nodes (Pt), and their carrier-sensing threshold (γ). Using stochastic geometry, a joint carrier-sensing threshold and power control strategy is proposed to meet the demand of coexisting WBANs based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Given different network distributions and carrier-sensing thresholds, the proposed strategy derives a minimum transmit power according to varying surrounding environment. We obtain expressions for transmission success probability and throughput adopting this strategy. Using numerical examples, we show that joint carrier-sensing thresholds and transmit power strategy can effectively improve the overall system throughput and reduce interference. Additionally, this paper studies the effects of a guard zone on the throughput using a Matern hard-core point process (HCPP) type II model. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the HCPP model can increase the success probability and throughput of networks

Food availability and the feeding ecology of ichthyofauna of a Ria Formosa (South Portugal) water reservoir

The feeding habits of several fish species in a water reservoir of the Ria Formosa, Portugal, that has similar ecological characteristics to the outside tidal channels, were studied and compared with food availability. The gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), the most abundant fish species, mainly selected gastropods and bivalves, although occasionally fish and small crustaceans such as tanaids, ostracods, and cumaceans were also selected. Polychaetes, although abundant in the environment, were not particularly selected by any of the fish species studied. The diets of all the species studied were characterized by a large variety of prey, allowing them to survive in environments of low diversity and poor stability, such as coastal lagoons. These fish are largely benthic feeders, essentially eating the epimacroinvertebrates and endomacroinvertebrates and, occasionally, fish. Diplodus vulgaris and Diplodus annularis preferentially selected gastropods and small crustaceans. Spondyliosoma cantharus generally preyed on crustaceans, including the highly mobile epifauna, the mysids, and decapods. Halobatrachus didactylus and Anguilla anguilla, had very diversified diets that included fish. Mullus barbatus were found to have selected all groups of crustaceans and also bivalves. Wrasses, gobies, and Diplodus sargus, all small-sized fish, singled out small crustaceans, gastropods, and bivalves. The Sparids were the least specialized predators, with broader niches than the other species. They preferentially selected molluscs, which were abundant in the environment. A large overlap of diets was observed and competition may be important when fish biomass is high
