Smoked marine fish from Western Region, Ghana: a value chain assessment
The value chain analysis of ths report focused on smoked marine fish- overwhelmingly the most important fish product originating in Western Region, Ghana. Smoked fish from Western Region is mainly destined for the domestic market where demand is very strong. Small quantities of smoked fish are destined for markets in Togo, Benin and Nigeria. The underlying objective of the fisheries value chain analysis is to identify opportunities for growth in the fisheries value chain, with an emphasis on those opportunities that have the potential to generate significant additional livelihoods, particularly at the level of the fishing communities and for low-income groups. The results from the value chain analysis will be used to identify pilot interventions to promote those livelihood outcomes. The main focus for the study is smoked fish (major species/product forms) destined for domestic markets. However, work will also be undertaken on the fresh fish trade and frozen fish to find out more about the significance of these value chains
Phase perturbation measurements through a heated ionosphere
High frequency radiowaves incident on an overdense (i.e., HF-frequency penetration frequency) ionosphere produce electron density irregularities. The effect of such ionospheric irregularities on the phase of UHF-radiowaves was determined. For that purpose the phase of radiowaves originating from celestial radio sources was observed with two antennas. The radiosources were chosen such that the line of sight to at least one of the antennas (usually both) passed through the modified volume of the ionosphere. Observations at 430 MHz and at 2380 MHz indicate that natural irregularities have a much stronger effect on the UHF phase fluctuations than the HF-induced irregularities for presently achieved HF-power densities of 20-80 uW/sq m. It is not clear whether some of the effects observed are the result of HF-modification of the ionosphere. Upper limits on the phase perturbations produced by HF-modification are 10 deg at 2380 MHz and 80 deg at 430 MHz

Buddhist-Derived Loving-Kindness and Compassion Meditation for the Treatment of Psychopathology: a Systematic Review
Although clinical interest has predominantly focused on mindfulness meditation, interest into the clinical utility of Buddhist-derived loving-kindness meditation (LKM) and compassion meditation (CM) is also growing. This paper follows the PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis) guidelines and provides an evaluative systematic review of LKM and CM intervention studies. Five electronic academic databases were systematically searched to identify all intervention studies assessing changes in the symptom severity of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (text revision fourth edition) Axis I disorders in clinical samples and/or known concomitants thereof in sub-clinical/healthy samples. The comprehensive database search yielded 342 papers and 20 studies (comprising a total of 1,312 participants) were eligible for inclusion. The Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies was then used to assess study quality. Participants demonstrated significant improvements across five psychopathology-relevant outcome domains: (i) positive and negative affect, (ii) psychological distress, (iii) positive thinking, (iv) interpersonal relations, and (v) empathic accuracy. It is concluded that LKM and CM interventions may have utility for treating a variety of psychopathologies. However, to overcome obstacles to clinical integration, a lessons-learned approach is recommended whereby issues encountered during the (ongoing) operationalization of mindfulness interventions are duly considered. Solution of a statistical mechanics model for pulse formation in lasers
We present a rigorous statistical-mechanics theory of nonlinear many mode
laser systems. An important example is the passively mode-locked laser that
promotes pulse operation when a saturable absorber is placed in the cavity. It
was shown by Gordon and Fischer [1] that pulse formation is a first-order phase
transition of spontaneous ordering of modes in an effective "thermodynamic"
system, in which intracavity noise level is the effective temperature. In this
paper we present a rigorous solution of a model of passive mode locking. We
show that the thermodynamics depends on a single parameter, and calculate
exactly the mode-locking point. We find the phase diagram and calculate
statistical quantities, including the dependence of the intracavity power on
the gain saturation function, and finite size corrections near the transition
point. We show that the thermodynamics is independent of the gain saturation
mechanism and that it is correctly reproduced by a mean field calculation. The
outcome is a new solvable statistical mechanics system with an unstable
self-interaction accompanied by a natural global power constraint, and an exact

Conductance through an array of quantum dots
We propose a simple approach to study the conductance through an array of
interacting quantum dots, weakly coupled to metallic leads. Using a mapping to
an effective site which describes the low-lying excitations and a slave-boson
representation in the saddle-point approximation, we calculated the conductance
through the system. Explicit results are presented for N=1 and N=3: a linear
array and an isosceles triangle. For N=1 in the Kondo limit, the results are in
very good agreement with previous results obtained with numerical
renormalization group (NRG). In the case of the linear trimer for odd , when
the parameters are such that electron-hole symmetry is induced, we obtain
perfect conductance . The validity of the approach is discussed in

On charged impurity structures in liquid helium
The thermoluminescence spectra of impurity-helium condensates (IHC) submerged in superfluid helium have
been observed for the first time. Thermoluminescence of impurity-helium condensates submerged in superfluid
helium is explained by neutralization reactions occurring in impurity nanoclusters. Optical spectra of excited
products of neutralization reactions between nitrogen cations and thermoactivated electrons were rather different
from the spectra observed at higher temperatures, when the luminescence due to nitrogen atom recombination
dominates. New results on current detection during the IHC destruction are presented. Two different mechanisms
of nanocluster charging are proposed to describe the phenomena observed during preparation and warmup
of IHC samples in bulk superfluid helium, and destruction of IHC samples out of liquid helium
Critical Behavior of Light
Light is shown to exhibit critical and tricritical behavior in passive
mode-locked lasers with externally injected pulses. It is a first and unique
example of critical phenomena in a one-dimensional many body light-mode system.
The phase diagrams consist of regimes with continuous wave, driven para-pulses,
spontaneous pulses via mode condensation, and heterogeneous pulses, separated
by phase transition lines which terminate with critical or tricritical points.
Enhanced nongaussian fluctuations and collective dynamics are observed at the
critical and tricritical points, showing a mode system analog of the critical
opalescence phenomenon. The critical exponents are calculated and shown to
