Dynamical properties of a gene-protein model
A major limitation of the classical random Boolean network model of gene regulatory networks is its synchronous updating, which implies that all the proteins decay at the same rate. Here a model is discussed, where the network is composed of two different sets of nodes, labelled G and P with reference to “genes” and “proteins”. Each gene corresponds to a protein (the one it codes for), while several proteins can simultaneously affect the expression of a gene. Both kinds of nodes take Boolean values. If we look at the genes only, it is like adding some memory terms, so the new state of the gene subnetwork network does no longer depend upon its previous state only. In general, these terms tend to make the dynamics of the network more ordered than that of the corresponding memoryless network. The analysis is focused here mostly on dynamical critical states. It has been shown elsewhere that the usual way of computing the Derrida parameter, starting from purely random initial conditions, can be misleading in strongly non-ergodic systems. So here the effects of perturbations on both genes’ and proteins’ levels is analysed, using both the canonical Derrida procedure and an “extended” one. The results are discussed. Moreover, the stability of attractors is also analysed, measured by counting the fraction of perturbations where the system eventually falls back onto the initial attractor
Relating the Chondrocyte Gene Network to Growth Plate Morphology: From Genes to Phenotype
During endochondral ossification, chondrocyte growth and differentiation is controlled by many local signalling pathways. Due to crosstalks and feedback mechanisms, these interwoven pathways display a network like structure. In this study, a large-scale literature based logical model of the growth plate network was developed. The network is able to capture the different states (resting, proliferating and hypertrophic) that chondrocytes go through as they progress within the growth plate. In a first corroboration step, the effect of mutations in various signalling pathways of the growth plate network was investigated
Cancer-Related Worry and Physical Well-Being in the Context of Perceived Stress in Young Adults with Testicular Cancer
Uncertainty associated with cancer can foster future-focused worry and ultimately diminish physical well-being, especially among young adult survivors. Stress perceptions might exacerbate the association of worry and physical well-being. Young adults with testicular cancer (N = 171) completed measures of physical well-being, perceived stress, and future cancer-related worry. Perceived stress and future worry were both negatively associated with physical well-being. Perceived stress moderated the relationship; more perceived stress was related to lower physical well-being in those with high worry. Interventions aimed at worry reduction might benefit from reducing global stress perceptions

Masculine norms about emotionality and social constraints in young and older adult men with cancer
Beliefs that men should restrict their display of emotions, or restrictive emotionality, might contribute to adjustment to cancer and this might be sensitive to social receptivity to disclosure. The present research examined relationships of restrictive emotionality, social constraints, and psychological distress in young adults with testicular cancer (N = 171; Study 1) and older men with prostate cancer (N = 66; Study 2). Study 1: positive associations were observed for social constraints and restrictive emotionality with depressive symptoms. Social constraints moderated the relationship, such that high restrictive emotionality was associated with higher depressive symptoms in those with high constraints. Study 2: only social constraints (and not restrictive emotionality) was positively associated with depressive symptoms and cancer-related intrusive thoughts. The social constraints Ă— restrictive emotionality interaction approached significance with depressive symptoms, such with high social constraints low restrictive emotionality was associated with higher depressive symptoms compared to those with less constraints. No significant associations were found for intrusive thoughts in either study. Findings demonstrate unique relationships with psychological distress across the lifespan of men with cancer given perception of constraints and adherence to masculine norms about emotionality
