Normalizers of Irreducible Subfactors
We consider normalizers of an irreducible inclusion of
factors. In the infinite index setting an inclusion
can be strict, forcing us to also investigate the semigroup
of one-sided normalizers. We relate these normalizers of in to
projections in the basic construction and show that every trace one projection
in the relative commutant is of the form for some
unitary with . This enables us to identify the
normalizers and the algebras they generate in several situations. In particular
each normalizer of a tensor product of irreducible subfactors is a tensor
product of normalizers modulo a unitary. We also examine normalizers of
irreducible subfactors arising from subgroup--group inclusions .
Here the normalizers are the normalizing group elements modulo a unitary from
. We are also able to identify the finite trace -bimodules in

Elastohydrodynamic study of actin filaments using fluorescence microscopy
We probed the bending of actin subject to external forcing and viscous drag.
Single actin filaments were moved perpendicular to their long axis in an
oscillatory way by means of an optically tweezed latex bead attached to one end
of the filaments. Shapes of these polymers were observed by epifluorescence
microscopy. They were found to be in agreement with predictions of semiflexible

A Computational Procedure to Detect a New Type of High Dimensional Chaotic Saddle and its Application to the 3-D Hill's Problem
A computational procedure that allows the detection of a new type of
high-dimensional chaotic saddle in Hamiltonian systems with three degrees of
freedom is presented. The chaotic saddle is associated with a so-called
normally hyperbolic invariant manifold (NHIM). The procedure allows to compute
appropriate homoclinic orbits to the NHIM from which we can infer the existence
a chaotic saddle. NHIMs control the phase space transport across an equilibrium
point of saddle-centre-...-centre stability type, which is a fundamental
mechanism for chemical reactions, capture and escape, scattering, and, more
generally, ``transformation'' in many different areas of physics. Consequently,
the presented methods and results are of broad interest. The procedure is
illustrated for the spatial Hill's problem which is a well known model in
celestial mechanics and which gained much interest e.g. in the study of the

Video Pandemics: Worldwide Viral Spreading of Psy's Gangnam Style Video
Viral videos can reach global penetration traveling through international
channels of communication similarly to real diseases starting from a
well-localized source. In past centuries, disease fronts propagated in a
concentric spatial fashion from the the source of the outbreak via the short
range human contact network. The emergence of long-distance air-travel changed
these ancient patterns. However, recently, Brockmann and Helbing have shown
that concentric propagation waves can be reinstated if propagation time and
distance is measured in the flight-time and travel volume weighted underlying
air-travel network. Here, we adopt this method for the analysis of viral meme
propagation in Twitter messages, and define a similar weighted network distance
in the communication network connecting countries and states of the World. We
recover a wave-like behavior on average and assess the randomizing effect of
non-locality of spreading. We show that similar result can be recovered from
Google Trends data as well.Comment: 10 page
Chirped pulse Raman amplification in plasma: high gain measurements
High power short pulse lasers are usually based on chirped pulse amplification (CPA), where a frequency chirped and temporarily stretched ``seed'' pulse is amplified by a broad-bandwidth solid state medium, which is usually pumped by a monochromatic ``pump'' laser. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of using chirped pulse Raman amplification (CPRA) as a means of amplifying short pulses in plasma. In this scheme, a short seed pulse is amplified by a stretched and chirped pump pulse through Raman backscattering in a plasma channel. Unlike conventional CPA, each spectral component of the seed is amplified at different longitudinal positions determined by the resonance of the seed, pump and plasma wave, which excites a density echelon that acts as a "chirped'" mirror and simultaneously backscatters and compresses the pump. Experimental evidence shows that it has potential as an ultra-broad bandwidth linear amplifier which dispenses with the need for large compressor gratings
Integrability and strong normal forms for non-autonomous systems in a neighbourhood of an equilibrium
The paper deals with the problem of existence of a convergent "strong" normal
form in the neighbourhood of an equilibrium, for a finite dimensional system of
differential equations with analytic and time-dependent non-linear term. The
problem can be solved either under some non-resonance hypotheses on the
spectrum of the linear part or if the non-linear term is assumed to be (slowly)
decaying in time. This paper "completes" a pioneering work of Pustil'nikov in
which, despite under weaker non-resonance hypotheses, the nonlinearity is
required to be asymptotically autonomous. The result is obtained as a
consequence of the existence of a strong normal form for a suitable class of
real-analytic Hamiltonians with non-autonomous perturbations.Comment: 10 page
Inter-species variation in colour perception
Inter-species variation in colour perception poses a serious problem for the view that colours are mind-independent properties. Given that colour perception varies so drastically across species, which species perceives colours as they really are? In this paper, I argue that all do. Specifically, I argue that members of different species perceive properties that are determinates of different, mutually compatible, determinables. This is an instance of a general selectionist strategy for dealing with cases of perceptual variation. According to selectionist views, objects simultaneously instantiate a plurality of colours, all of them genuinely mind-independent, and subjects select from amongst this plurality which colours they perceive. I contrast selectionist views with relationalist views that deny the mind-independence of colour, and consider some general objections to this strategy
Direct transition to high-dimensional chaos through a global bifurcation
In the present work we report on a genuine route by which a high-dimensional
(with d>4) chaotic attractor is created directly, i.e., without a
low-dimensional chaotic attractor as an intermediate step. The high-dimensional
chaotic set is created in a heteroclinic global bifurcation that yields an
infinite number of unstable tori.The mechanism is illustrated using a system
constructed by coupling three Lorenz oscillators. So, the route presented here
can be considered a prototype for high-dimensional chaotic behavior just as the
Lorenz model is for low-dimensional chaos.Comment: 7 page
