Observed distribution functions of H, He, C, O, and Fe in corotating energetic particle streams: Implications for interplanetary acceleration and propagation
Distribution functions for H, He, C, O, and Fe derived from our IMP 8 measurements of approximately 0.15 to approximately 8 MeV/nucleon particles in three corotating streams observed near earth are shown to have a simple exponential dependence on the particle speed. The e-folding speed, v sub o, is typically 0.01c, is found to be the same for the distribution functions of all elements examined, and varies little from one corotating event to the next. The relative abundances of energetic particles in these events resemble most closely the solar coronal composition and, thus, presumably that of the solar wind. These results may imply that the acceleration of these particles, which occurs in corotating interaction regions at several AU from the sun, is by a statistical process
Radio Frequency Tunable Oscillator Device Based on SmB6 Microcrystal
Radio frequency tunable oscillators are vital electronic components for
signal generation, characterization, and processing. They are often constructed
with a resonant circuit and a 'negative' resistor, such as a Gunn-diode,
involving complex structure and large footprints. Here we report that a piece
of SmB6, 100 micron in size, works as a current-controlled oscillator in the 30
MHz frequency range. SmB6 is a strongly correlated Kondo insulator that was
recently found to have a robust surface state likely to be protected by the
topology of its electronics structure. We exploit its non-linear dynamics, and
demonstrate large AC voltage outputs with frequencies from 20 Hz to 30 MHz by
adjusting a small DC bias current. The behaviors of these oscillators agree
well with a theoretical model describing the thermal and electronic dynamics of
coupled surface and bulk states. With reduced crystal size we anticipate the
device to work at higher frequencies, even in the THz regime. This type of
oscillator might be realized in other materials with a metallic surface and a
semiconducting bulk.Comment: v3 to appear in Physical Review Letter
Pressure effects on the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeAuSb2
The f-electron compound CeAuSb2, which crystallizes in the ZrCuSi2-type
tetragonal structure, orders antiferromagnetically between 5 and 6.8 K, where
the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N depends on the occupancy of
the Au site. Here we report the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of a
high-quality crystal CeAuSb2 with T_N of 6.8 K, the highest for this compound.
The magnetic transition temperature is initially suppressed with pressure, but
is intercepted by a new magnetic state above 2.1 GPa. The new phase shows a
dome shape with pressure and coexists with another phase at pressures higher
than 4.7 GPa. The electrical resistivity shows a T^2 Fermi liquids behavior in
the complex magnetic state, and the residual resistivity and the T^2
resistivity coefficient increases with pressure, suggesting the possibility of
a magnetic quantum critical point at a higher pressure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 firure
Soybean (Glycine max) oil bodies and their associated phytochemicals
Abstract:  Soybean oil bodies were isolated from 3 cultivars (Ustie, K98, and Elena) and the occurrence of 2 classes of phytochemicals (tocopherol isoforms and isoflavones) and strength of their association with isolated oil bodies was evaluated. Tocopherol is shown to be closely associated with soybean oil bodies; δ-tocopherol demonstrated a significantly greater association with oil bodies over other tocopherol isoforms. Isoflavones do not show a significant physical association with oil bodies, although there is some indication of a passive association of the more hydrophobic aglycones during oil body isolation.
Practical Application:  Oil bodies are small droplets of oil that are stored as energy reserves in the seeds of oil seeds, and have the potential to be used as future food ingredients. If oil body suspensions are commercialized on a large scale, knowledge of the association of phytochemicals with oil bodies will be valuable in deciding species of preference and predicting shelf life and nutritional value

Superconductivity without Fe or Ni in the phosphides BaIr2P2 and BaRh2P2
Heat capacity, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm
bulk superconductivity in single crystals of BaIrP (T=2.1K) and
BaRhP (T = 1.0 K). These compounds form in the ThCrSi (122)
structure so they are isostructural to both the Ni and Fe pnictides but not
isoelectronic to either of them. This illustrates the importance of structure
for the occurrence of superconductivity in the 122 pnictides. Additionally, a
comparison between these and other ternary phosphide superconductors suggests
that the lack of interlayer bonding favors superconductivity. These
stoichiometric and ambient pressure superconductors offer an ideal playground
to investigate the role of structure for the mechanism of superconductivity in
the absence of magnetism.Comment: Published in Phys Rev B: Rapid Communication
