    Fast unilateral isometric knee extension torque development and bilateral jump height.

    Purpose: We hypothesized that the initial rate (first 40 ms) of unilateral knee extensor torque development during a maximally fast isometric contraction would depend on the subjects' ability for fast neural activation and that it would predict bilateral jumping performance. Methods: Nine males (21.8 ± 0.9 yr, means ± SD) performed unilateral fast isometric knee extensions (120° knee angle) without countermovement on a dynamometer and bilateral squat jumps (SJ) and countermovement jumps (CMJ) starting from 90 and 120° knee angles (full extension = 180°). The dynamometer contractions started either from full relaxation or from an isometric pre-tension (15% maximal isometric torque, Tmax). Torque time integral for the first 40 ms after torque onset (TTI-40, normalized to Tmax) and averaged normalized rectified knee extensor EMG for 40 ms before fast torque onset (EMG-40) were used to quantify initial torque rise and voluntary muscle activation. Results: TTI-40 without pre-tension (range: 0.02-0.19% Tmax per second) was significantly lower than TTI-40 with pre-tension, and both were significantly (r = 0.81 and 0.80) related to EMG-40. During jumping, similar significant positive relations were found between jump height and knee extensor EMG during the first 100 ms of the rise in ground reaction force. There also were significant positive linear relations between dynamometer TTI-40 and jump height (r = 0.75 (SJ 90), 0.84 (SJ 120), 0.76 (CMJ 90), and 0.86 (CMJ 120)) but not between dynamometer Tmax and jump height (-0.16 < r < 0.02). Conclusion: One-legged TTI-40 to a large extent explained the variation in jump height. The ability to produce a high efferent neural drive before muscle contraction seemed to dominate performance in both the simple single-joint isometric task and the complex multijoint dynamic task.     Multiplicative processes and power laws

    [Takayasu et al., Phys. Rev.Lett. 79, 966 (1997)] revisited the question of stochastic processes with multiplicative noise, which have been studied in several different contexts over the past decades. We focus on the regime, found for a generic set of control parameters, in which stochastic processes with multiplicative noise produce intermittency of a special kind, characterized by a power law probability density distribution. We briefly explain the physical mechanism leading to a power law pdf and provide a list of references for these results dating back from a quarter of century. We explain how the formulation in terms of the characteristic function developed by Takayasu et al. can be extended to exponents μ>2\mu >2, which explains the ``reason of the lucky coincidence''. The multidimensional generalization of (\ref{eq1}) and the available results are briefly summarized. The discovery of stretched exponential tails in the presence of the cut-off introduced in \cite{Taka} is explained theoretically.     Effects of concurrent training on oxidative capacity in rat gastrocnemius muscle

    PURPOSE: Training for improvement of oxidative capacity of muscle fibers may be attenuated when concurrently training for peak power. However, because of fiber type-specific recruitment, such attenuation may only account for high-oxidative muscle fibers. Here, we investigate the effects of concurrent training on oxidative capacity (as measured by succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity) by using task-specific recruitment of the high- and low-oxidative compartment of rat medial gastrocnemius muscle (GM). METHODS: Forty rats were subjected to 6 wk of peak power training (PT, n = 10), endurance training (ET, n = 10), concurrent peak power and endurance training (PET, n = 10), or no training (control, n = 10). SDH activity, mRNA expression of SDH, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), receptor-interacting protein 140, and BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa-interacting protein 3 as well as PGC-1α protein levels were analyzed in the low- and high-oxidative region of the GM. RESULTS: In the low-oxidative compartment, PT and PET induced a 30% decrease in SDH activity of Type IIB fibers compared with controls and ET (P < 0.001) without changes in mRNA or protein levels. In the high-oxidative compartment, after ET, SDH mRNA levels were 42% higher and RIP140 mRNA levels 33% lower compared with controls, which did not result in changes in SDH activity. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that in compartmentalized rat GM, peak power on top of endurance training attenuated transcription of mRNA for mitochondrial proteins in high-oxidative muscle fibers. In low-oxidative Type IIB fibers, peak power training substantially decreased SDH activity, which was not related to lower SDH mRNA levels. It is concluded that PT and PET enhanced mitochondrial degradation in the low-oxidative compartment of rat GM. Copyright © 2013 by the American College of Sports Medicine

    Extreme value statistics and return intervals in long-range correlated uniform deviates

    We study extremal statistics and return intervals in stationary long-range correlated sequences for which the underlying probability density function is bounded and uniform. The extremal statistics we consider e.g., maximum relative to minimum are such that the reference point from which the maximum is measured is itself a random quantity. We analytically calculate the limiting distributions for independent and identically distributed random variables, and use these as a reference point for correlated cases. The distributions are different from that of the maximum itself i.e., a Weibull distribution, reflecting the fact that the distribution of the reference point either dominates over or convolves with the distribution of the maximum. The functional form of the limiting distributions is unaffected by correlations, although the convergence is slower. We show that our findings can be directly generalized to a wide class of stochastic processes. We also analyze return interval distributions, and compare them to recent conjectures of their functional form

    Pathways from speech illusions to psychotic symptoms in subjects at Ultra-High Risk for psychosis: combining an experimental measure of aberrant experiences with network analysis

    Background One of the oldest and most influential theories of psychosis formation states that delusions arise in an attempt to explain unusual experiences, including perceptual aberrations. The White Noise Task by Galdos et al (2011) was developed as an experimental task to assess the tendency to attribute meaning to random perceptual stimuli: speech illusions in white noise. Studies to date have demonstrated that speech illusions as assessed with the White Noise Task are associated with a composite measure of positive symptoms in patients with psychotic disorders (Galdos et al, 2011; Catalan et al, 2014). However, findings in non-clinical samples have been inconsistent: one study found an association with a composite measure of subclinical positive symptoms, including support for a relation with familial psychosis liability (Galdos et al, 2011), whereas other studies did not find any association in non-clinical samples or only partly (Catalan et al, 2014; Rimvall et al, 2016; Pries et al, 2017). The current study aims to further examine whether speech illusions as assessed with the White Noise Task are indicative of psychosis liability and to explore specific symptomatic pathways. Methods We conducted symptom-based network analyses in Ultra-High Risk (UHR) subjects participating in the European network of national networks studying gene-environment interactions in schizophrenia project (EU-GEI, 2014; www.eu-gei.eu). Psychotic symptoms were assessed with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Transition to clinical psychosis was assessed with the Comprehensive Assessment of At Risk Mental State (CAARMS). We used a conservative measure of speech illusions, as described in Catalan et al (2014). Results The current sample consisted of 339 UHR subjects, of which 9.1% (N=31) experienced speech illusions. Preliminary network analyses in cross-sectional baseline data showed potential pathways from speech illusions to delusional ideation, through hallucinatory experiences. We also found evidence of prospective relations between speech illusions at baseline and transition to clinical psychosis. Pathways ran via baseline psychotic symptoms and affective symptoms, as well as a ‘direct’ pathway. Discussion As far as we are aware, this is the first study combining an experimental measure of aberrant experiences with symptom-based network analysis. Although the current reported findings are preliminary and exploratory, they tentatively support a relation between speech illusions as assessed with the White Noise Task and psychosis liability. This relation may be dependent on sample composition, and not generalizable to the general population as a whole. Future studies may benefit from focusing on more detailed trajectories of both susceptibility to speech illusions and course of (sub)clinical psychotic symptom severity in subjects with increased risk for psychosis, with use of more frequent, short assessment periods and inclusion of environmental risk factors for transition to clinical disorder

    Brown Carbon Production by Aqueous-Phase Interactions of Glyoxal and SO2

    Oxalic acid and sulfate salts are major components of aerosol particles. Here, we explore the potential for their respective precursor species, glyoxal and SO2, to form atmospheric brown carbon via aqueous-phase reactions in a series of bulk aqueous and flow chamber aerosol experiments. In bulk aqueous solutions, UV- and visible-light-absorbing products are observed at pH 3–4 and 5–6, respectively, with small but detectable yields of hydroxyquinone and polyketone products formed, especially at pH 6. Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), C2, and C3 sulfonates are major products detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) at pH 5. Past studies have assumed that the reaction of formaldehyde and sulfite was the only atmospheric source of HMS. In flow chamber experiments involving sulfite aerosol and gas-phase glyoxal with only 1 min residence times, significant aerosol growth is observed. Rapid brown carbon formation is seen with aqueous aerosol particles at \u3e80% relative humidity (RH). Brown carbon formation slows at 50–60% RH and when the aerosol particles are acidified with sulfuric acid but stops entirely only under dry conditions. This chemistry may therefore contribute to brown carbon production in cloud-processed pollution plumes as oxidizing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) interact with SO2 and water

    Elite women coaches negotiating and resisting power in football

    While football remains mostly a sport associated with men and national identity, it has also become a popular sport for women and girls in Western countries. Despite this success, however, the coaching of football remains a strongly male dominated occupation. In this paper, we explored how 10 elite women coaches of national football teams negotiated and resisted the entanglement of techniques of biopower, sovereign and disciplinary power within the sport. The results revealed that sovereign power as exercised by Football Associations was intertwined with forms of discursive and biopower. This power constructed men as more knowledgeable about women's football than women who have years of playing and coaching experience at the elite level in the sport. Consequently, men are more often hired to coach women. In response, elite women coaches negotiated and resisted these forms of power by engaging in problematization, public truth telling/parrhesia, self-transformation, and by creating alternative discourses about gender and football. They constructed their fellow women coaches as being more knowledgeable and more experienced than men coaches in women's football. The findings suggest that this use of a Foucauldian analysis into the entanglement of forms of power within such male-dominated organizations and into the technologies of the self, utilized by women coaches, provides new insights into understanding the relative lack of change in gender ratio in (sport) leadership
