    Youth offending teams: a grounded theory of the barriers and facilitators to young people seeking help from mental health services

    Young people within the youth justice system experience three times higher rates of mental health problems than the general youth population yet are one of the least likely groups to seek help. Very little theory or research is available within this population to explain these high rates of unmet need. The study aimed to develop a theory about the barriers and facilitators that Youth Offending Team workers experience when supporting young people to access mental health services. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants; eight Youth Offending Team workers, two young people and a mental health worker. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim before being analyzed using “grounded theory”. This method was chosen to allow the in-depth exploration of participants experiences and the development of theory within an under-researched area. Youth Offending Team workers appeared to play a crucial role in supporting a young person’s help-seeking from mental health services. A preliminary model was developed which demonstrated the complex relationships between six identified factors which influenced this role. Youth Offending Team workers would benefit from more support, training and recognition of the key role they play in supporting young people to become ready for a referral to mental health services. Mental health services could be well placed to provide this. Clinical implications are discussed. Further research is needed to develop our understanding of what influenced the help-seeking of this vulnerable population

    Characterization of Thin Film Materials using SCAN meta-GGA, an Accurate Nonempirical Density Functional

    We discuss self-consistently obtained ground-state electronic properties of monolayers of graphene and a number of beyond graphene compounds, including films of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), using the recently proposed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) to the density functional theory. The SCAN meta-GGA results are compared with those based on the local density approximation (LDA) as well as the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). As expected, the GGA yields expanded lattices and softened bonds in relation to the LDA, but the SCAN meta-GGA systematically improves the agreement with experiment. Our study suggests the efficacy of the SCAN functional for accurate modeling of electronic structures of layered materials in high-throughput calculations more generally

    High-resolution observation of the Venus dayglow spectrum 1250-1430 angstroms

    The spectrum of the dayglow of Venus between 1250 and 1430 A was measured in high resolution with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. Seven exposures which were made with the short wavelength camera in the high dispersion mode using the large aperture were combined to give a total exposure time of 309 min. The atomic oxygen lines at 1302.2, 1304.9, 1306.0, and 1355.6 A are present. In addition, the (14,3) and (14,4) bands of the carbon monoxide fourth positive system at 1317 and 1354 A respectively are identified. These bands are compared with synthetic spectra, showing the excitation mechanism to be fluorescent scattering of solar Lyman alpha radiation

    Entropic Origin of Pseudogap Physics and a Mott-Slater Transition in Cuprates

    We propose a new approach to understand the origin of the pseudogap in the cuprates, in terms of bosonic entropy. The near-simultaneous softening of a large number of different qq-bosons yields an extended range of short-range order, wherein the growth of magnetic correlations with decreasing temperature TT is anomalously slow. These entropic effects cause the spectral weight associated with the Van Hove singularity (VHS) to shift rapidly and nearly linearly toward half filling at higher TT, consistent with a picture of the VHS driving the pseudogap transition at a temperature T\sim T^*. As a byproduct, we develop an order-parameter classification scheme that predicts supertransitions between families of order parameters. As one example, we find that by tuning the hopping parameters, it is possible to drive the cuprates across a {\it transition between Mott and Slater physics}, where a spin-frustrated state emerges at the crossover.Comment: 24 pgs, 15 figs + Supp. Material [6pgs, 3 figs].     Morphology-dependent trends of galaxy age with environment in Abell 901/902 seen with COMBO-17

    We investigate correlations between galaxy age and environment in the Abell 901/2 supercluster for separate morphologies. Using COMBO-17 data, we define a sample of 530 galaxies, complete at MV5logh<18M_V -5\log h<-18 on an area of 3.5×3.53.5\times 3.5 (Mpc/hh)2^2. We explore several age indicators including an extinction-corrected residual from the colour-magnitude relation (CMR). As a result, we find a clear trend of age with density for galaxies of all morphologies that include a spheroidal component, in the sense that galaxies in denser environments are older. This trend is not seen among Scd/Irr galaxies since they all have young ages. However, the trend among the other types is stronger for fainter galaxies. While we also see an expected age-morphology relation, we find no evidence for a morphology-density relation at fixed age.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (Letters

    A method is presented for deriving the nonrelativistic quantum hamiltonian of a free massive fermion from the relativistic lagrangian of the Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. It permits the extraction of terms at arbitrary order in a Foldy-Wouthuysen expansion in inverse powers of the mass. The quantum particle hamiltonian is obtained and its nonrelativistic limit is given explicitly to third order
