    Accident investigation

Aircraft accident investigations are discussed with emphasis on those accidents that involved weather as a contributing factor. The organization of the accident investigation board for air carrier accidents is described along with the hearings, and formal report preparation. Statistical summaries of the investigations of general aviation accidents are provided

Exploring alternative symmetry breaking mechanisms at the LHC with 7, 8 and 10 TeV total energy

    Get PDF
In view of the annnouncement that in 2012 the LHC will run at 8 TeV, we study the possibility of detecting signals of alternative mechanisms of ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking, described phenomenologically by unitarized models, at energies lower than 14 TeV. A complete calculation with six fermions in the final state is performed using the PHANTOM event generator. Our results indicate that at 8 TeV some of the scenarios with TeV scale resonances are likely to be identified while models with no resonances or with very heavy ones will be inaccessible, unless the available luminosity will be much higher than expected

Corrections to Scaling for the Two-dimensional Dynamic XY Model

With large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we confirm that for the two-dimensional XY model, there is a logarithmic correction to scaling in the dynamic relaxation starting from a completely disordered state, while only an inverse power law correction in the case of starting from an ordered state. The dynamic exponent zz is z=2.04(1)z=2.04(1).Comment: to appear as a Rapid commu. in Phys. Rev.

Constraints on Quartic Vector-Boson Interactions from Z Physics

    Get PDF
We obtain the constraints on possible anomalous quartic vector-boson vertices arising from the precision measurements at the ZZ pole. In the framework of SU(2)LU(1)YSU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order D=4D=4 that lead to four-gauge-boson interactions but do not induce anomalous trilinear vertices. We constrain the anomalous quartic interactions by evaluating their one-loop corrections to the ZZ pole physics. Our analysis is performed in a generic RξR_\xi gauge and it shows that only the operators that break the SU(2)CSU(2)_C custodial symmetry get limits close to the theoretical expectations. Our results also indicate that these anomalous couplings are already out of reach of the Next Linear e+ee^+ e^- Collider, while the Large Hadron Collider could be able to further extend the bounds on some of these couplings.Comment: 16 pages, 1 Postscript figures, uses RevTex and eps.st

Monte Carlo Simulations of Short-time Critical Dynamics with a Conserved Quantity

With Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate short-time critical dynamics of the three-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic Ising model with a globally conserved magnetization msm_s (not the order parameter). From the power law behavior of the staggered magnetization (the order parameter), its second moment and the auto-correlation, we determine all static and dynamic critical exponents as well as the critical temperature. The universality class of ms=0m_s=0 is the same as that without a conserved quantity, but the universality class of non-zero msm_s is different.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.

Probing Anomalous Quartic Couplings in e-gamma and gamma-gamma Colliders

We analyze the potential of the e+e- Linear Colliders, operating in the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes, to probe anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the multiple production of W's and Z's. We examine all SU(2)LU(1)YSU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y chiral operators of order p^4 that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. We show that the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes are able not only to establish the existence of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector but also to probe for anomalous quartic couplings of the order of 10^{-2} at 90% CL. Moreover, the information gathered in the e-gamma mode can be used to reduced the ambiguities of the e+e- mode.Comment: Revtex, 18 pages, 6 figure

Adolescents’ viewing of suicide-related web content and psychological problems: differentiating the roles of cyberbullying involvement

Possible links of cyberbullying with suicide and psychological problems have recently received considerable attention. Suicide-related behaviours have also been linked with viewing of associated web-content. Studies on traditional bullying indicate that the roles of bullying involvement (bullies, victims and bully-victims) matter in terms of associations with specific suicide-related behaviours and psychological problems. Yet, related research in the area of cyberbullying is lacking. The current study investigates the association of cyberbullying roles with viewing of specific suicide-related web-content and psychological problems. Data from N = 19,406 (50% girls) 11-16 year olds (M = 13.54, SD = 1.68) of a representative sample of internet using children in Europe were analysed. Self- reports were obtained for cyberbullying role, viewing of web-content related to self-harm and suicide as well as the emotional, peer and conduct problems subscales of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Multi-nomial logistic regression analyses revealed that compared to those not involved in cyberbullying, viewing of web-content related to suicide was higher for cybervictims and cyberbully-victims but not for cyberbullies. Viewing of web-content related to self-harm was higher for all cyberbullying roles but especially for cyberbully-victims. Rates of emotional problems were higher among cybervictims and cyberbully-victims, rates of peer problems were higher for cybervictims, and rates of conduct problems were higher for all cyberbullying roles. Moreover, the links between cyberbullying role and viewing of suicide-related web-content were independent of psychological problems. The results can be useful to more precisely target efforts towards the specific problems of each cyberbullying role. The outcomes on viewing of web-content also indicate an opportunity to enhance the presence of health service providers on internet platforms
