    Charged State of a Spherical Plasma in Vacuum

    The stationary state of a spherically symmetric plasma configuration is investigated in the limit of immobile ions and weak collisions. Configurations with small radii are positively charged as a significant fraction of the electron population evaporates during the equilibration process, leaving behind an electron distribution function with an energy cutoff. Such charged plasma configurations are of interest for the study of Coulomb explosions and ion acceleration from small clusters irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses and for the investigation of ion bunches propagation in a plasma

    Sol gel synthesis and photoluminescence study of Eu3+ doped SnO2

    Tin oxide(IV) nanophosphor doped with europium had been prepared by sol-gel technique using SnCl4 as precurser. XRD, IR, SEMand TEM analyses were used for characterization of SnO2:Eu3+. The XRD analysis shows that well crystallized tetragonal rutile SnO2:Eu3+ can be obtained by this method and the crystal size was about 15-20nm as an average for the sample calcined at 400ºC for 2h. The evolution of the most important functional groups during the steps involved in this synthesis route is explained in view of the results obtained with FTIR and XRD.  A spherical like morphology of the prepared  SnO2 nanoparticles was observed in the SEM and TEM studies. The SnO2 nanoparticles show stable photoluminescence emission intensity at 612 nm (5D0/7F2) of the Eu3+ ions activated SnO2 nanocrystals  This paper discuss the mechanistic approach of origin of luminescence in SnO2

    A conserved lipid-binding loop in the kindlin FERM F1 domain is required for kindlin-mediated aIIbB3 integrin coactivation

    The activation of heterodimeric integrin adhesion receptors from low to high affinity states occurs in response to intracellular signals that act on the short cytoplasmic tails of integrin beta subunits. Binding of the talin FERM (four-point-one, ezrin, radixin, moesin) domain to the integrin beta-tail provides one key activation signal, but recent data indicate that the kindlin family of FERM domain proteins also play a central role. Kindlins directly bind integrin beta subunit cytoplasmic domains at a site distinct from the talin-binding site, and target to focal adhesions in adherent cells. However, the mechanisms by which kindlins impact integrin activation remain largely unknown. A notable feature of kindlins is their similarity to the integrin-binding and activating talin FERM domain. Drawing on this similarity, here we report the identification of an unstructured insert in the kindlin F1 FERM domain, and provide evidence that a highly conserved polylysine motif in this loop supports binding to negatively charged phospholipid head groups. We further show that the F1 loop and its membrane-binding motif are required for kindlin-1 targeting to focal adhesions, and for the cooperation between kindlin-1 and -2 and the talin head in aIIbB3 integrin activation, but not for kindlin binding to integrin beta tails. These studies highlight the structural and functional similarities between kindlins and the talin head and indicate that as for talin, FERM domain interactions with acidic membrane phospholipids as well beta-integrin tails contribute to the ability of kindlins to activate integrins

    The stability of axisymmetric Taylor-Couette flow in hydromagnetics

    The linear marginal instability of an axisymmetric MHD Taylor-Couette flow of infinite vertical extension is considered. The dependence of the flow stability on magnetic Prandtl number, Pm, and gap-width between rotating cylinders is investigated. There is an unstability for flows with resting outer cylinder even without a magnetic field. Nevertheless, there are solutions with smaller critical Reynolds numbers for certain (weak) magnetic fields. These solutions, however, exist for not too small Pm or large enough gap. For hydrodynamically stable flow, we found that a magnetic field amplitude always exsits where the critical Reynolds number is minimal. In all calculated cases the minimal critical Reynolds numbers are running with 1/Pm for small Pm and the critical Reynolds numbers exceed value of 10^6 for Pm of sodium (10^{-5}) or gallium (10^{-6}).Comment: 8 pages, 17 figure

    Idiopathic osteonecrosis of the medial tibial plateau

    Osteonecrosis of the medial tibial plateau is characterized by acute pain on the medial aspect of the knee. Progression can lead to articular collapse and requires early diagnosis and treatment. We studied seven patients affected of idiopathic osteonecrosis of the tibial plateau. The mean age was 62 years and the mean follow-up 42 months. We performed roentgenograms in all patients, bone scans in three patients and magnetic resonance image (MRI) in five. MRI shows T1-weighted low-intensity signal and T2-weighted high-intensity signal with a surrounding area of intermediate low-intensity signal. An increased focal uptake was seen at bone scan. Histological findings showed necrotic bone with empty lacunae. Surgical treatment consisted of tibial subchondral drilling in four patients-two of them by failure of conservative treatment, and a total knee arthroplasty in other two. One patient had a satisfactory evolution with conservative treatment. Idiopathic osteonecrosis of the tibial plateau must be considered in elderly patients with knee pain over the medial tibial plateau. At early stages, decompression with tibial drilling must be considered. This procedure allows a prompt and effective relief of symptom

    Pre-segmented 2-Step IMRT with subsequent direct machine parameter optimisation – a planning study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Modern intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) mostly uses iterative optimisation methods. The integration of machine parameters into the optimisation process of step and shoot leaf positions has been shown to be successful. For IMRT segmentation algorithms based on the analysis of the geometrical structure of the planning target volumes (PTV) and the organs at risk (OAR), the potential of such procedures has not yet been fully explored. In this work, 2-Step IMRT was combined with subsequent direct machine parameter optimisation (DMPO-Raysearch Laboratories, Sweden) to investigate this potential.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a planning study DMPO on a commercial planning system was compared with manual primary 2-Step IMRT segment generation followed by DMPO optimisation. 15 clinical cases and the ESTRO Quasimodo phantom were employed. Both the same number of optimisation steps and the same set of objective values were used. The plans were compared with a clinical DMPO reference plan and a traditional IMRT plan based on fluence optimisation and consequent segmentation. The composite objective value (the weighted sum of quadratic deviations of the objective values and the related points in the dose volume histogram) was used as a measure for the plan quality. Additionally, a more extended set of parameters was used for the breast cases to compare the plans.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The plans with segments pre-defined with 2-Step IMRT were slightly superior to DMPO alone in the majority of cases. The composite objective value tended to be even lower for a smaller number of segments. The total number of monitor units was slightly higher than for the DMPO-plans. Traditional IMRT fluence optimisation with subsequent segmentation could not compete.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>2-Step IMRT segmentation is suitable as starting point for further DMPO optimisation and, in general, results in less complex plans which are equal or superior to plans generated by DMPO alone.</p

    Reproducibility of patient setup by surface image registration system in conformal radiotherapy of prostate cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The reproducibility of patient setup for radiotherapy is based on various methods including external markers, X-rays with planar or computerized image acquisition, and, more recently, surface matching imaging. We analyzed the setup reproducibility of 16 patients affected by prostate cancer who underwent conformal radiotherapy with curative intent by using a surface image registration system.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed the setup reproducibility of 16 patients affected by prostate cancer candidates for conformal radiotherapy by using a surface image registration system. At the initial setup, EPID images were compared with DRRs and a reference 3D surface image was obtained by the AlignRT system (Vision RT, London, UK). Surface images were acquired prior to every subsequent setup procedure. EPID acquisition was repeated when errors > 5 mm were reported.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean random and systematic errors were 1.2 ± 2.3 mm and 0.3 ± 3.0 mm along the X axis, 0.0 ± 1.4 mm and 0.5 ± 2.0 mm along the Y axis, and 2.0 ± 1.8 mm and -0.7 ± 2.4 mm along the Z axis respectively. The positioning error detected by AlignRT along the 3 axes X, Y, and Z exceeded the value of 5 mm in 14.1%, 2.0%, and 5.1% measurements and the value of 3 mm in 36.9%, 13.6% and 27.8% measurements, respectively. Correlation factors calculated by linear regression between the errors measured by AlignRT and EPID ranged from 0.77 to 0.92 with a mean of 0.85 and SD of 0.13. The setup measurements by surface imaging are highly reproducible and correlate with the setup errors detected by EPID.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Surface image registration system appears to be a simple, fast, non-invasive, and reproducible method to analyze the set-up alignment in 3DCRT of prostate cancer patients.</p

    Introducing a new ICRU report: Prescribing, recording and reporting electron beam therapy

    The ICRU published several Reports about volumes and doses specifications for radiotherapy, such as the Report 29 (1978), devoted to photon and electron beam therapy. This report 29 becoming absolete, a new Report was published in 1993 for external photon beam radiotherapy, the Report 50, recommending new definitions and more accurate specifications. With electran beams specific problems are raised, and the ICRU considered suitable to prepare a special Report for them, to be published in the near future.The main features of the present draft are as follows:1.Volumes specifications in agreement with the ICRU Report 50,•Volumes to be determined before treatment planning: gross tumour volume (GTV), c1inical target volume (CTV), organs at risk volumes (OR).•Volume to be determined during treatment planning: Planning target volume (PTV).•Volumes resulting fram the treatment plan chosen: treatment volume (TV), irradiated volume (IV).In the future Report on electron beams, an additional volume is defined, the internal target volume (ITV) geometrical concept representing the volume en-compassing the c1inical target volume, taking into consideration margins due to the variations of the clinical target volume in position, shape an size. A similar concept has been extended to organs at risk, the planning organ at risk volume.2.Dose specificationThe general statements for photon beams apply:•dose at a reference point (ICRU point) situated at or near the center of the planning target volume and, when possible, near or on the central axis of the electron beam at the depth of the peak dose.•Minimal and maximal doses in the planning target volume•Dose delivered to the organs at risk•Additional information is recommended, when possible (e.g. DVH).With electron beams, the dose homogeneity expected within the PTV (± 5 to ± 10 %) requires an adaptation of the terapeutic range concept, such that the value of the isodose surface encompassing the PTV be situated between 85 % and 95 % of the reference dose. The peak absorbed dose on the beam axis should always been specified, even if it is different fram the reference dose.At last, as in Report 50, three levels of dose evaluation for reporting are considered, depending on the aim of the treatment and the data available
