Subsurface Fish Handling to Limit Decompression Effects on Deepwater Species
A method of handling hooked fish at intermediate depth was developed for species which occur deeper than conventional scuba depths. Juvenile pink snappers, Pristipomoides filamentosus, were hauled from 65-100 m to a depth of only 30 m, where the ambient pressure change was a fraction of that produced by hauling fish to the sea surface. This method afforded a unique opportunity to acoustically tag deepwater, physoclistous fish without the need to alter the fish's original swim bladder volume and without the high risk of further injury associated with surface handling. Tagged P. filamentosus survived and behaved well and were tracked successfully. This basic method could be applied to a variety of deepwater species in a number of research approaches, including tagging and dietary studies
Application of Monte Carlo-based statistical significance determinations to the Beta Cephei stars V400 Car, V401 Car, V403 Car and V405 Car
We have used Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis and Monte Carlo significance
tests to detect periodicities above the 3-sigma level in the Beta Cephei stars
V400 Car, V401 Car, V403 Car and V405 Car. These methods produce six previously
unreported periodicities in the expected frequency range of excited pulsations:
one in V400 Car, three in V401 Car, one in V403 Car and one in V405 Car. One of
these six frequencies is significant above the 4-sigma level. We provide
statistical significances for all of the periodicities found in these four
stars.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure

Kinetic distance and kinetic maps from molecular dynamics simulation
Characterizing macromolecular kinetics from molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations requires a distance metric that can distinguish
slowly-interconverting states. Here we build upon diffusion map theory and
define a kinetic distance for irreducible Markov processes that quantifies how
slowly molecular conformations interconvert. The kinetic distance can be
computed given a model that approximates the eigenvalues and eigenvectors
(reaction coordinates) of the MD Markov operator. Here we employ the
time-lagged independent component analysis (TICA). The TICA components can be
scaled to provide a kinetic map in which the Euclidean distance corresponds to
the kinetic distance. As a result, the question of how many TICA dimensions
should be kept in a dimensionality reduction approach becomes obsolete, and one
parameter less needs to be specified in the kinetic model construction. We
demonstrate the approach using TICA and Markov state model (MSM) analyses for
illustrative models, protein conformation dynamics in bovine pancreatic trypsin
inhibitor and protein-inhibitor association in trypsin and benzamidine
The intellectual and moral integrity of bioethics: response to commentaries on A case study in unethical transgressive bioethics: \u27Letter of concern from bioethicists\u27 about the prenatal administration of dexamethasone .
In our target article we showed that the Letter of Concern (LoC) fails to meet accepted standards for presenting empirical data for the purpose of supplementing a normative claim and for argument-based normative ethics. The LoC fails to meet the standards of evidence-based reasoning by making false claims, failing to reference data that undermine its key premises, and misrepresenting and misinterpreting the scientific publications it selectively references. The LoC fails to meet the standards of argument-based reasoning by treating as settled matters what are, instead, ongoing controversies, offering “mere opinion” as a substitute for argument, and making contradictory claims. The LoC is methodologically defective and thus a case study in unethical transgressive bioethics. Not withdrawing the LoC will damage the field of bioethics, making this case study in unethical transgressive bioethics important for the entire field

Sex differences in emotional concordance.
Emotions involve response synchronization across experiential, physiological, and behavioral systems, referred to as concordance or coherence. Women are thought to be more emotionally aware and expressive than men and may therefore display stronger response concordance; however, research on this topic is scant. Using a random-order film-average design, we assessed concordance among experiential (arousal, valence), autonomic (electrodermal activity, heart rate, preejection period, respiratory sinus arrhythmia), respiratory (respiratory rate), and behavioral (corrugator and zygomatic electromyography) responses to 15 two-minute films varying in valence and arousal. We then calculated for each participant and pair of measures a within-subject correlation index using averages from the 15 films. Pronounced individual concordance of up to 0.9 was observed. Arousal-physiology and valence-behavior concordances were particularly pronounced. Women displayed higher concordance than men for almost all pairs of measures. Findings indicate stronger psychophysiological response coupling in women than men and provide novel insights into affective differences between the sexes
Electronic spectrum and tunnelling properties of multi-wall carbon nanotubes
We develop a general approach to calculations of the electron spectrum of
metallic multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) with arbitrary number of coaxial
layers. It is based on the model with singular attractive potential of
equidistant conductive cylinders. The knowledge of one-electron spectrum allows
to construct the corresponding Green function and then to calculate the entropy
and density of states for MWNT. We analyze the tunnelling between the nanotube
and normal metal electrode. The possibility of direct determination of
one-electron density of states by measurements of the tunnelling conductivity
at low temperatures is proved and the necessary restrictions on temperature are
formulated. We discuss briefly the conflicting experimental observations of
electronic properties of MWNT.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
