    A Grammar of Papuan Malay

    Get PDF
This book presents an in-depth linguistic description of one Papuan Malay variety, based on fifteen hours of recordings of spontaneous narratives and conversations between Papuan Malay speakers.‘Papuan Malay’ refers to the easternmost varieties of Malay (Austronesian). They are spoken in the coastal areas of West Papua, the western part of the island of New Guinea. The variety described here is spoken along West Papua’s northeast coast. After a general introduction to the language, its setting and its history, this grammar discusses the following topics, building up from smaller grammatical constituents to larger ones: phonology, word formation, noun and prepositional phrases, verbal and nonverbal clauses, non-declarative clauses, and conjunctions and constituent combining. Of special interest to linguists, typologists and Malay specialists are the following in-depth analyses and descriptions: affixation and its productivity across domains of language choice, reduplication and its gesamtbedeutung, personal pronouns and their adnominal uses, demonstratives and locatives and their extended uses, and adnominal possessive relations and their non-canonical uses. This study provides a point of comparison for further studies in other (Papuan) Malay varieties and a starting point for Papuan Malay language development efforts.Language Use in Past and Presen

The Economic Lifecycle by Gender – Results Combining Monetary and Time Use Estimates

In recent decades, we have witnessed profound changes in family size and structure. While marriage rates and the number of children have declined in most industrialised countries, female labour force participation rates have risen significantly. However, while the working hours and wages of women have increased, we continue to observe huge discrepancies in market production by gender in Germany. This results in considerable differences in the economic lifecycle of men and women. The differences diminish if we take unpaid household production, consumption, and caring into account. We find that, after applying this comprehensive approach, the female lifecycle resembles male consumption, income, and transfer patterns. These findings are interesting in the light of future demographic changes, as they suggest that the explicit policy aim of increasing female labour force participation could place constraints on the currently observed division of labour in the market and in the household. In recent decades, we have witnessed profound changes in family size and structure. Feasibility of the Hardware Muon Trigger Track Finder Processor in CMS

This paper describes a feasibility study for the design of the Muon Trigger Track Finder Processor in the high-energy physics experiment CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid, planned for 2005) at CERN. It covers the specification, proposed method, and a prototype implementation. Comparison between several other measurement methods and the proposed one are carried out. The task of the processor is to identify muons and measure their transverse momenta and locations within 350 ns. It uses data from almost two hundred thousand detector cells of drift tube muon chambers. The processor searches for muon tracks originating from the interaction point by joining the track segments provided by the drift tube muon chamber electronics to full tracks. It assigns transverse momentum to each reconstructed track using the track's bend angle

Track finding processor in the DTBX based CMS barrel muon trigger

We present the design and simulation of the track finding processor in the DTBX ( Drift Tube with Bunch Crossing Identification) based CMS barrel muon trigger system. The processor searches for muon tracks originating from the interaction region by joining the track segments provided by the mean timer processors of the drift chambers to track strings. It assigns transverse momenta to the reconstructed tracks using the tracks' bending angle. High speed is achieved by performing the track reconstruction fully in parallel. In this contribution the algorithms, implementation and simulation results are presented
