In particular, we prove that two loose block independent actions are even Kakutani equivalent if and only if they have the same entropy. We also prove that for d \u3e 1 the ergodic, isometric extensions of the positive entropy loose block independent Zᔈ actions are also loose block independent

    Architectural Urbanism: Melbourne/Seoul

    Architectural Urbanism is an ambition and sensibility for propositions that address the context of the city within the operative scale of the small architectural project. Architectural urbanism represents a tailoring of projects to the local; to the materiality and specificity of the everyday; and to the grain and substance of the location above all else. Architectural urbanism is less about erasure and more about insertion; infill; the weaving of old and new and the dynamics that evolve from subtle and careful manipulation of the city in detail. The exhibition explores commonality in the apparently different contexts of both cities – speculating on these as forms of ‘architectural urbanism' in the contemporary city of the Asia-Pacific at its northern and southern extremes. Architectural projects from five Melbourne architectural practitioners have been selected to exhibit in Seoul. The practices are: Muir Mendes, Baracco + Wright, Iredale Pederson Hook, NMBW Architecture Studio and Kerstin Thompson Architects - all of whom have strong links to the RMIT Architecture design research and teaching community.     The authors generalize the dynamical system constructed by J. Auslander in 1959, resulting in perhaps the simplest family of examples of minimal but not strictly ergodic systems. A characterization of unique ergodicity and mean-L-stability is given. The new systems are also shown to have zero topological entropy and fail to be weakly rigid. Some results on the set of idempotents in the enveloping semigroup are also achieved

    The quiescent progenitors of four Type II-P/L supernovae

    We present Large Binocular Telescope difference imaging data for the final years of four Type II-P/L supernovae progenitors. For all four, we find no significant evidence for stochastic or steady variability in the U, B, V, or R-bands. Our limits constrain variability to no more than roughly 5-10% of the expected R-band luminosities of the progenitors. These limits are comparable to the observed variability of red supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds. Based on these four events, the probability of a Type II-P/L progenitor having an extended outburst after Oxygen ignition is <37% at 90% confidence. Our observations cannot exclude short outbursts in which the progenitor returns to within ~10% of its quiescent flux on the time scale of months with no dust formation.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 1 table.     Long-lived non-thermal states realized by atom losses in one-dimensional quasi-condensates

    We investigate the cooling produced by a loss process non selective in energy on a one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions in the quasi-condensate regime. By performing nonlinear classical field calculations for a homogeneous system, we show that the gas reaches a non-thermal state where different modes have acquired different temperatures. After losses have been turned off, this state is robust with respect to the nonlinear dynamics, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We argue that the integrability of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is linked to the existence of such long-lived non-thermal states, and illustrate this by showing that such states are not supported within a non-integrable model of two coupled 1D gases of different masses. We go beyond a classical field analysis, taking into account the quantum noise introduced by the discreteness of losses, and show that the non-thermal state is still produced and its non-thermal character is even enhanced. Finally, we extend the discussion to gases trapped in a harmonic potential and present experimental observations of a long-lived non-thermal state within a trapped 1D quasi-condensate following an atom loss process

    A mathematically simple, turbulence closure model designed to treat transonic airfoil flows even with massive separation is described. Numerical solutions of the Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations obtained with this closure model are shown to agree well with experiments over a broad range of test conditions

    Two specimen configuration of a (0/90)2s SCS-6/Ti-15-3 laminate were tested and analyzed: a center hole (CH) specimen and a double edge notch (DEN) specimen. The two specimen configurations failed at similar stress levels. Two analytical techniques, a 3-D finite-element analysis and a macro-micromechanical analysis were used to predict the overall stress-deformation behavior and the notch-tip fiber-matrix interface stresses in both configurations
