Probiotics and in-hive fermentation as a source of beneficial microbes to support the gut microbial health of honey bees

Managed populations of honey bees (Apis mellifera Linnaeus; Hymenoptera: Apidae) are regularly exposed to infectious diseases. Good hive management including the occasional application of antibiotics can help mitigate infectious outbreaks, but new beekeeping tools and techniques that bolster immunity and help control disease transmission are welcome. In this review, we focus on the applications of beneficial microbes for disease management as well as to support hive health and sustainability within the apicultural industry. We draw attention to the latest advances in probiotic approaches as well as the integration of fermented foods (such as water kefir) with disease-fighting properties that might ultimately be delivered to hives as an alternative or partial antidote to antibiotics. There is substantial evidence from in vitro laboratory studies that suggest beneficial microbes could be an effective method for improving disease resistance in honey bees. However, colony level evidence is lacking and there is urgent need for further validation via controlled field trials experimentally designed to test defined microbial compositions against specific diseases of interest.Fil: Rodríguez, María A.. Predicting vaccine effectiveness against severe COVID-19 over time and against variants: a meta-analysis

Vaccine protection from symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection has been shown to be strongly correlated with neutralising antibody titres; however, this has not yet been demonstrated for severe COVID-19. To explore whether this relationship also holds for severe COVID-19, we performed a systematic search for studies reporting on protection against different SARS-CoV-2 clinical endpoints and extracted data from 15 studies. Since matched neutralising antibody titres were not available, we used the vaccine regimen, time since vaccination and variant of concern to predict corresponding neutralising antibody titres. We then compared the observed vaccine effectiveness reported in these studies to the protection predicted by a previously published model of the relationship between neutralising antibody titre and vaccine effectiveness against severe COVID-19. We find that predicted neutralising antibody titres are strongly correlated with observed vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic (Spearman ρ = 0.95, p < 0.001) and severe (Spearman ρ = 0.72, p < 0.001 for both) COVID-19 and that the loss of neutralising antibodies over time and to new variants are strongly predictive of observed vaccine protection against severe COVID-19

The ionized gas outflow in the Circinus galaxy : Kinematics and physical conditions

We employ MUSE/VLT data to study the ionized and highly ionized gas phases of the feedback in Circinus, the closest Seyfert 2 galaxy to us. The analysis of the nebular emission allowed us to detect a remarkable high-ionization gas outflow beyond the galaxy plane traced by the coronal lines [Fe vii] λ6089 and [Fe x] λ6374, extending up to 700 and 350 pc NW from the nucleus, respectively. This is the first time that the [Fe x] emission is observed at such distances from the central engine in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The gas kinematics reveals expanding gas shells with velocities of a few hundred km s−1, spatially coincident with prominent hard X-ray emission detected by Chandra. Density and temperature sensitive line ratios show that the extended high-ionization gas is characterized by a temperature reaching 25 000 K and an electron density >102 cm−3. We found that local gas excitation by shocks produced by the passage of a radio jet leads to the spectacular high-ionization emission in this object. This hypothesis is fully supported by photoionization models that account for the combined effects of the central engine and shocks. They reproduce the observed emission line spectrum at different locations inside and outside of the NW ionization cone. The energetic outflow produced by the radio jet is spatially located close to an extended molecular outflow recently reported using ALMA which suggests that they both represent different phases of the same feedback process acting on the AGN.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica
