Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars
The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is
difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground
radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E100 GeV)
gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair
production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used
to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range
of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing
source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general,
knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the
density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening
with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the
intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are . Upper limits are
then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific
spectral shape for the EBL. This is an advantage over other methods since the

Transverse electrokinetic and microfluidic effects in micro-patterned channels: lubrication analysis for slab geometries
Off-diagonal (transverse) effects in micro-patterned geometries are predicted
and analyzed within the general frame of linear response theory, relating
applied presure gradient and electric field to flow and electric current. These
effects could contribute to the design of pumps, mixers or flow detectors.
Shape and charge density modulations are proposed as a means to obtain sizeable
transverse effects, as demonstrated by focusing on simple geometries and using

Tactics for Reasoning modulo AC in Coq
We present a set of tools for rewriting modulo associativity and
commutativity (AC) in Coq, solving a long-standing practical problem. We use
two building blocks: first, an extensible reflexive decision procedure for
equality modulo AC; second, an OCaml plug-in for pattern matching modulo AC. We
handle associative only operations, neutral elements, uninterpreted function
symbols, and user-defined equivalence relations. By relying on type-classes for
the reification phase, we can infer these properties automatically, so that
end-users do not need to specify which operation is A or AC, or which constant
is a neutral element.Comment: 16
Multidimensional Measures of Physical Activity and Their Association with Gross Motor Capacity in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy.
The current lack of adapted performance metrics leads clinicians to focus on what children with cerebral palsy (CP) do in a clinical setting, despite the ongoing debate on whether capacity (what they do at best) adequately reflects performance (what they do in daily life). Our aim was to measure these children's habitual physical activity (PA) and gross motor capacity and investigate their relationship. Using five synchronized inertial measurement units (IMU) and algorithms adapted to this population, we computed 22 PA states integrating the type (e.g., sitting, walking, etc.), duration, and intensity of PA. Their temporal sequence was visualized with a PA barcode from which information about pattern complexity and the time spent in each of the six simplified PA states (PAS; considering PA type and duration, but not intensity) was extracted and compared to capacity. Results of 25 children with CP showed no strong association between motor capacity and performance, but a certain level of motor capacity seems to be a prerequisite for the achievement of higher PAS. Our multidimensional performance measurement provides a new method of PA assessment in this population, with an easy-to-understand visual output (barcode) and objective data for clinical and scientific use
The ground state of binary systems with a periodic modulation of the linear coupling
We consider a quasi-one-dimensional two-component systm, described by a pair
of Nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger/Gross-Pitaevskii Equations (NLSEs/GPEs), which are
coupled by the linear mixing, with local strength , and by the
nonlinear incoherent interaction. We assume the self-repulsive nonlinearity in
both components, and include effects of a harmonic trapping potential. The
model may be realized in terms of periodically modulated slab waveguides in
nonlinear optics, and in Bose-Einstein condensates too. Depending on the
strengths of the linear and nonlinear couplings between the components, the
ground states (GSs) in such binary systems may be symmetric or asymmetric. In
this work, we introduce a periodic spatial modulation of the linear coupling,
making an odd, or even function of the coordinate. The sign flips of
strongly modify the structure of the GS in the binary system, as
the relative sign of its components tends to lock to the local sign of . Using a systematic numerical analysis, and an analytical approximation, we
demonstrate that the GS of the trapped system contains one or several kinks
(dark solitons) in one component, while the other component does not change its
sign. Final results are presented in the form of maps showing the number of
kinks in the GS as a function of the system's parameters, with the odd/even
modulation function giving rise to the odd/even number of the kinks. The
modulation of also produces a strong effect on the transition
between states with nearly equal and strongly unequal amplitudes of the two

Diatom species fluxes in the seasonally ice-covered Antarctic Zone:. New data from offshore Prydz Bay and comparison with other regions from the eastern Antarctic and western Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean
The Antarctic Zone, the southernmost belt of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, plays an important role in the control of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. In the last decade, a number of studies have highlighted the importance of diatom assemblage composition in influencing the magnitude of the organic carbon and biogenic silica fluxes exported out of the mixed layer in Southern Ocean ecosystems. Here we investigate the relationship between the makeup of the diatom assemblage, organic carbon and biogenic silica export and several significant environmental parameters using sediment trap records deployed in different sectors of the Antarctic Zone. The study is divided in two parts. We first present unpublished diatom species flux data collected by a sediment trap in the offshore waters of Prydz Bay (Station PZB-1) over a year. The results of this study revealed a major export peak of diatom valves in Austral summer and two small unexpected secondary flux pulses dining full winter conditions. The summer diatom sinking assemblages were largely composed of small and rapidly dividing species such as Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Fragilariopsis curta and Pseudo-nitzschia lineola, while winter assemblages were dominated by Fragilariopsis kerguelensis most reflecting its persistent strategy and selective preservation. In the second part of the study, we compare the annual diatom assemblage composition and biogeochemical fluxes of Station PZB-1 with flux data documented in previous sediment trap studies conducted in other sectors of the Antarctic Zone in order to investigate how diatom floristics influence the composition and magnitude of particle fluxes in the Antarctic Zone. The lack of correlation between the annual diatom valve, organic carbon and biogenic silica fluxes across stations indicates that other factors aside from diatom abundance play a major role in the carbon and silica export in AZ. Among these factors, the composition of the diatom assemblage appears to be critical, as suggested by the strong and significant correlation between Bio-SiO2 and the valve fluxes of F. kerguelensis alone, that this species is the main Bio-SiO2 vector from the surface layer to the deep ocean in the AZ waters, regardless of its relative abundance. Lastly, the good correlation between the annual fluxes of the group of small Fragilariopsis species with satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration estimates over the study stations, suggest that high abundances of these species in the Southern Ocean paleorecords could be used as a proxy of high algal biomass accumulation.NSFNational Science Foundation (NSF) [OPP-9726186]CCMAR [PEstC/MAR/LA0015/2013]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Massive Increase, Spread, and Exchange of Extended Spectrum {beta}-Lactamase-Encoding Genes Among Intestinal Enterobacteriaceae in Hospitalized Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition in Niger.
Background. From the time of CTX-M emergence, extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing enterobacteria (ESBL-E) have spread worldwide in community settings as well as in hospitals, particularly in developing countries. Although their dissemination appears linked to Escherichia coli intestinal carriage, precise paths of this dynamic are largely unknown. Methods. Children from a pediatric renutrition center were prospectively enrolled in a fecal carriage study. Antibiotic exposure was recorded. ESBL-E strains were isolated using selective media from fecal samples obtained at admission and, when negative, also at discharge. ESBL-encoding genes were identified, their environments and plasmids were characterized, and clonality was assessed with polymerase chain reaction-based methods and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. E. coli strains were subjected to multilocus sequence typing. Results. The ESBL-E carriage rate was 31% at admission in the 55 children enrolled. All children enrolled received antibiotics during hospitalization. Among the ESBL-E-negative children, 16 were resampled at discharge, and the acquisition rate was 94%. The bla(CTX-M-15) gene was found in >90% of the carriers. Genetic environments and plasmid characterization evidenced the roles of a worldwide, previously described, multidrug-resistant region and of IncF plasmids in CTX-M-15 E. coli dissemination. Diversity of CTX-M-15-carrying genetic structures and clonality of acquired ESBL E. coli suggested horizontal genetic transfer and underlined the potential of some ST types for nosocomial cross-transmission. Conclusions. Cross-transmission and high selective pressure lead to very high acquisition of ESBL-E carriage, contributing to dissemination in the community. Strict hygiene measures as well as careful balancing of benefit-risk ratio of current antibiotic policies need to be reevaluated
Classical Loop Actions of Gauge Theories
Since the first attempts to quantize Gauge Theories and Gravity in the loop
representation, the problem of the determination of the corresponding classical
actions has been raised. Here we propose a general procedure to determine these
actions and we explicitly apply it in the case of electromagnetism. Going to
the lattice we show that the electromagnetic action in terms of loops is
equivalent to the Wilson action, allowing to do Montecarlo calculations in a
gauge invariant way. In the continuum these actions need to be regularized and
they are the natural candidates to describe the theory in a ``confining

Stereochemical course of the hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by chitinases Al and D from Bacillus circulans WL-12
AbstractChitinases A1 and D were purified from the periplasmic proteins produced by Escherichia coli HB101 harbouring recombinant plasmids carrying respectively the chiA and chiD genes of Bacillus circulans WL-12. HPLC analysis indicated that during the hydrolysis of chitotriose, both chitinases initially produce N-acetylglucosamine and only one anomer of chitobiose. 1H NMR spectroscopy of the hydrolysis of chitotetraitol showed that this anomer corresponds to β-chitobiose, demonstrating that chitinases Al and D act by a molecular mechanism that retains the anomeric configuration. This mechanism is similar to that of lysozymes although both chitinases belong to a family of proteins sharing no demonstrable amino acid sequence similarity with lysozymes
