A Study of Inclusive Double-Pomeron-Exchange in p pbar -> p X pbar at root s = 630 GeV
We report measurements of the inclusive reaction, p pbar -> p X pbar, in
events where either or both the beam-like final-state baryons were detected in
Roman-pot spectrometers and the central system was detected in the UA2
calorimeter. A Double-Pomeron-Exchange (DPE) analysis of these data and single
diffractive data from the same experiment demonstrates that, for central masses
of a few GeV, the extracted Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section exhibits an
enhancement which exceeds factorization expectations by an order-of-magnitude.
This may be a signature for glueball production. The enhancement is shown to be
independent of uncertainties connected with possible non-universality of the
Pomeron flux factor. Based on our analysis, we present DPE cross section
predictions, for unit (1 mb) Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section, at the
Tevatron, LHC and the 920 GeV fixed-target experiment, HERA-B.Comment: 52 pages, 27 Encapsulated Postscript figures, 3 Tables, LaTex,

Cross Section Measurements of Hard Diffraction at the SPS-Collider
The UA8 experiment previously reported the observation of jets in diffractive
events containing leading protons (``hard diffraction''), which was interpreted
as evidence for the partonic structure of an exchanged Reggeon, believed to be
the Pomeron . In the present Letter, we report the final UA8 hard-diffractive
(jet) cross section results and their interpretation. After corrections, the
fraction of single diffractive events with mass from 118 to 189 GeV that have
two scattered partons, each with Et_jet > 8 GeV, is in the range 0.002 to 0.003
(depending on x_p). We determine the product, fK, of the fraction by which the
Pomeron's momentum sum rule is violated and the normalization constant of the
Pomeron-Flux-Factor of the proton. For a pure gluonic- or a pure qqbar-Pomeron
, respectively: fK = 0.30 +- 0.05 +- 0.09) and (0.56 +- 0.09 +- 0.17) GeV^-2.Comment: 20 pages, 5 Encapsulated Postscript figures, LaTex, Final Version,

Investigation of the inhibitory effects of the benzodiazepine derivative, 5-BDBD on P2X4 purinergic receptors by two complementary methods
BACKGROUND/AIMS
ATP-gated P2X4 purinergic receptors (P2X4Rs) are cation channels with important roles in diverse cell types. To date, lack of specific inhibitors has hampered investigations on P2X4Rs. Recently, the benzodiazepine derivative, 5-BDBD has been proposed to selectively inhibit P2X4Rs. However, limited evidences are currently available on its inhibitory properties. Thus, we aimed to characterize the inhibitory effects of 5-BDBD on recombinant human P2X4Rs.
METHODS
We investigated ATP-induced intracellular Ca(2+) signals and whole cell ion currents in HEK 293 cells that were either transiently or stably transfected with hP2X4Rs.
RESULTS
Our data show that ATP (< 1 μM) stimulates P2X4R-mediated Ca(2+) influx while endogenously expressed P2Y receptors are not activated to any significant extent. Both 5-BDBD and TNP-ATP inhibit ATP-induced Ca(2+) signals and inward ion currents in a concentration-dependent manner. Application of two different concentrations of 5-BDBD causes a rightward shift in ATP dose-response curve. Since the magnitude of maximal stimulation does not change, these data suggest that 5-BDBD may competitively inhibit the P2X4Rs.
CONCLUSIONS
Our results demonstrate that application of submicromolar ATP concentrations allows reliable assessment of recombinant P2XR functions in HEK 293 cells. Furthermore, 5-BDBD and TNP-ATP have similar inhibitory potencies on the P2X4Rs although their mechanisms of actions are different
Extracellular zinc and ATP-gated P2X receptor calcium entry channels: New zinc receptors as physiological sensors and therapeutic targets
In this review, we focus on two attributes of P2X receptor channel function, one essential and one novel. First, we propose that P2X receptors are extracellular sensors as well as receptors and ion channels. In particular, the large extracellular domain (that comprises 70% of the molecular mass of the receptor channel protein) lends itself to be a cellular sensor. Moreover, its exquisite sensitivity to extracellular pH, ionic strength, and multiple ligands evokes the function of a sensor. Second, we propose that P2X receptors are extracellular zinc receptors as well as receptors for nucleotides. We provide novel data in multiple publications and illustrative data in this invited review to suggest that zinc triggers ATP-independent activation of P2X receptor channel function. In this light, P2X receptors are the cellular site of integration between autocrine and paracrine zinc signaling and autocrine and paracrine purinergic signaling. P2X receptors may sense changes in these ligands as well as in extracellular pH and ionic strength and transduce these sensations via calcium and/or sodium entry and changes in membrane potential
Searches at HERA for Squarks in R-Parity Violating Supersymmetry
A search for squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in e^+p
collisions at HERA at a centre of mass energy of 300 GeV, using H1 data
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^(-1). The direct production
of single squarks of any generation in positron-quark fusion via a Yukawa
coupling lambda' is considered, taking into account R-parity violating and
conserving decays of the squarks. No significant deviation from the Standard
Model expectation is found. The results are interpreted in terms of constraints
within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the constrained MSSM
and the minimal Supergravity model, and their sensitivity to the model
parameters is studied in detail. For a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic
strength, squark masses below 260 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level in a
large part of the parameter space. For a 100 times smaller coupling strength
masses up to 182 GeV are excluded.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 3 table
Multiplicity Structure of the Hadronic Final State in Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
The multiplicity structure of the hadronic system X produced in
deep-inelastic processes at HERA of the type ep -> eXY, where Y is a hadronic
system with mass M_Y< 1.6 GeV and where the squared momentum transfer at the pY
vertex, t, is limited to |t|<1 GeV^2, is studied as a function of the invariant
mass M_X of the system X. Results are presented on multiplicity distributions
and multiplicity moments, rapidity spectra and forward-backward correlations in
the centre-of-mass system of X. The data are compared to results in e+e-
annihilation, fixed-target lepton-nucleon collisions, hadro-produced
diffractive final states and to non-diffractive hadron-hadron collisions. The
comparison suggests a production mechanism of virtual photon dissociation which
involves a mixture of partonic states and a significant gluon content. The data
are well described by a model, based on a QCD-Regge analysis of the diffractive
structure function, which assumes a large hard gluonic component of the
colourless exchange at low Q^2. A model with soft colour interactions is also
successful.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J., error in first

Differential (2+1) Jet Event Rates and Determination of alpha_s in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Events with a (2+1) jet topology in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA are
studied in the kinematic range 200 < Q^2< 10,000 GeV^2. The rate of (2+1) jet
events has been determined with the modified JADE jet algorithm as a function
of the jet resolution parameter and is compared with the predictions of Monte
Carlo models. In addition, the event rate is corrected for both hadronization
and detector effects and is compared with next-to-leading order QCD
calculations. A value of the strong coupling constant of alpha_s(M_Z^2)=
0.118+- 0.002 (stat.)^(+0.007)_(-0.008) (syst.)^(+0.007)_(-0.006) (theory) is
extracted. The systematic error includes uncertainties in the calorimeter
energy calibration, in the description of the data by current Monte Carlo
models, and in the knowledge of the parton densities. The theoretical error is
dominated by the renormalization scale ambiguity.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Eur. Phys.
Deep-Inelastic Inclusive ep Scattering at Low x and a Determination of alpha_s
A precise measurement of the inclusive deep-inelastic e^+p scattering cross
section is reported in the kinematic range 1.5<= Q^2 <=150 GeV^2 and
3*10^(-5)<= x <=0.2. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at HERA in
1996 and 1997, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20 pb^(-1). The
double differential cross section, from which the proton structure function
F_2(x,Q^2) and the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) are extracted, is
measured with typically 1% statistical and 3% systematic uncertainties. The
measured partial derivative (dF_2(x,Q^2)/dln Q^2)_x is observed to rise
continuously towards small x for fixed Q^2. The cross section data are combined
with published H1 measurements at high Q^2 for a next-to-leading order DGLAP
QCD analysis. The H1 data determine the gluon momentum distribution in the range
3*10^(-4)<= x <=0.1 to within an experimental accuracy of about 3% for Q^2 =20
GeV^2. A fit of the H1 measurements and the mu p data of the BCDMS
collaboration allows the strong coupling constant alpha_s and the gluon
distribution to be simultaneously determined. A value of alpha
_s(M_Z^2)=0.1150+-0.0017 (exp) +0.0009-0.0005 (model) is obtained in NLO, with
an additional theoretical uncertainty of about +-0.005, mainly due to the
uncertainty of the renormalisation scale.Comment: 68 pages, 24 figures and 18 table
Measurements of Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Measurements of transverse energy flow are presented for neutral current
deep-inelastic scattering events produced in positron-proton collisions at
HERA. The kinematic range covers squared momentum transfers Q^2 from 3.2 to
2,200 GeV^2, the Bjorken scaling variable x from 8.10^{-5} to 0.11 and the
hadronic mass W from 66 to 233 GeV. The transverse energy flow is measured in
the hadronic centre of mass frame and is studied as a function of Q^2, x, W and
pseudorapidity. A comparison is made with QCD based models. The behaviour of
the mean transverse energy in the central pseudorapidity region and an interval
corresponding to the photon fragmentation region are analysed as a function of
Q^2 and W.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys.
