Reliable compartmental models for double-pipe heat exchangers: An analytical study
AbstractIn this work, the analytical properties of the heat exchanger infinite-dimensional dynamic model are discussed. More importantly, those of a 2nd-order lumped-parameter model using the logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD) as driving force are derived and shown to agree with those of the former. Three essential aspects are focused: existence and uniqueness of solutions, equilibrium states, and stability properties. The results developed in this work are intended to supply a solid support for the reliability on the use of the kind of simple compartmental model that is treated. This is specially addressed to works where it is not the quantitative solutions but the qualitative behavior that is important, like modelling and simulation of heat exchanger networks and complex industrial processes where heat exchangers are involved
Levels of insulin and HOMA-IR in adolescents in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico
An alarming rise of obesity in adolescents has been observed, placing them at risk of developing resistance to insulin (IR) and its adverse metabolic consequences such as diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Objective: To know the prevalence of obesity, and the levels of glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR and its association with the BMIz, waist circumference and the pubertal stage in a random
sample of adolescents. Materials and methods: 292 adolescents between 12 and 15 years (152 female and 140 male), whose anthropometric measurements (weight, height and waist circumference) were taken, body mass index calculated and Z-score determined. Blood glucose and insulin levels were evaluated from a sample of blood and their HOMA-IR was determined. Results: The results showed that 32.5% were obese, 22.3% were overweight and 23.6%
showed adolescent central obesity. Glucose levels (p = 0.016), insulin (p = 0.0001) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.0001) showed significant differences in the group with obesity. Values of the three parameters were increased with the stage of puberty. We found significant differences in the levels of glucose (p = 0.0388), insulin (p = 0.0005) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.0001) between the prepubertal and postpubertal stages
4to.

Nonlinear Observer Based Fault Diagnosis for an Innovative Intensified Heat-Exchanger/Reactor
International audienceThis paper describes an application of a fault detection and isolation (FDI)scheme for an intensified Heat-exchanger (HEX)/Reactor, where the exothermicchemical reaction of sodium thiosulfate oxidation by hydrogen peroxide is per-formed. To achieve this, precise estimation of all states of HEX/Reactor, includ-ing temperatures and concentrations of different reactants, as well as process faultdetection and isolation is completed by a high gain observer. Then, process faultidentification is achieved by several banks of interval filters. Finally, an intensifiedHEX/reactor is used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Simulationresults are shown to illustrate the performance of the algorithm presente
