Performance of Photon-Pair Quantum Key Distribution Systems

We analyze the quantitative improvement in performance provided by a novel quantum key distribution (QKD) system that employs a correlated photon source (CPS) and a photon-number resolving detector (PNR). Our calculations suggest that given current technology, the CPR implementation offers an improvement of several orders of magnitude in secure bit rate over previously described implementations

We report on the first search for Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) from altitudes where they are thought to be produced. The Airborne Detector for Energetic Lightning Emissions (ADELE), an array of gamma-ray detectors, was flown near the tops of Florida thunderstorms in August/September 2009. The plane passed within 10 km horizontal distance of 1213 lightning discharges and only once detected a TGF. If these discharges had produced TGFs of the same intensity as those seen from space, every one should have been seen by ADELE. Separate and significant nondetections are established for intracloud lightning, negative cloud-to-ground lightning, and narrow bipolar events. We conclude that TGFs are not a primary triggering mechanism for lightning. We estimate the TGF-to-flash ratio to be on the order of 10^(−2) to 10^(−3) and show that TGF intensities cannot follow the well-known power-law distribution seen in earthquakes and solar flares, due to our limits on the presence of faint events

Kebijakan Sistem Transportasi Barang Multimoda Di Provinsi Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam

More than 95% of freight movement in the Province of Aceh is done by the road mode. As most of the land in the province is surrounded by sea, the freight movement could have been done by sea transportation. Railway was already in the Province of Aceh long time ago, it began to operate in 1906, but the operation was closed in 1982. The Central Government and the Aceh Provincial Government want to revitalize the railway and there is also a plan to build a new Jalan Raya from Banda Aceh to North Sumatra border. However, there is a constraint in the costs of building these infrastructures so that multimodal and intermodal transportation can not take place. As a result, road transportation remains to be a major transport choice and this condition is even worse with vehicles on the road also tend to carry overload. This study was conducted in connection with the overload effect of the freight transport using trucks and how these trucks cause road deterioration and increase road maintenance costs in the Province of Aceh. The results suggest that multimodal/intermodal freight transportation, specifically road and railroad combined transport, could provide more efficient freight transport and, most likely, is the best option for the province

More than 90% of freight movement in Indonesia is carried out by land transportation (mostly highway mode). Meanwhile most nation land is surrounded by water, in which the movement could have been carried out by sea transportation. There are rail network in Java Island and some parts of Sumatera Island where multimodal/inter-modality system can be applied. However, lack of sea and rail transportation infrastructure and management makes highway mode the main choice among other transportation modes. This study investigated the impact of overloading trucks in the freight transportation system in Indonesia, because the government still allows trucks to carry up to 50% of the normal maximum load. This policy has greatinfluence on road deterioration, creating the vehicle damage factor approximately 5 times higher than that of the normal one. This overloading has a big impact on the maintenance of the road and will increase themaintenance budget

There are compelling evidences that oxidative stress plays important role in age‐related neurodegenerative diseases and natural food‐derived dietary antioxidants appear to be the first line of defence to take care of the oxidative stress. The analysis results of this study showed that Cili Burung of the hot pepper landraces contained the highest amount of TPC (1.00 mg/g DW), TFC (0.17 mg/g DW), capsaicinoids (0.05 mg/g), and the highest FRAP activity (439 mg/g DW). However, DPPH assay revealed the highest DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 = 250 μg/ml) in Halia Bara rhizome. Rhizomes of both landraces of ginger showed a significant amount of capsaicinoids. Hot pepper Cili Ungu (5.50 g/kg) and sweet pepper Cili Kulai had the highest P contents (~5.5 g/kg). Halia Bentong ginger rhizome had the highest content of K (33.84 g/kg); however, Halia Bentong ginger roots had remarkably greater contents of Ca (10.96 g/kg). Ginger rhizomes and roots had greater contents of micro minerals compared to hot and sweet chili peppers. Ginger roots contained good amounts of bioactive compounds and mineral nutrients indicating its commercial value

Locally recurrent subcutaneous and muscular hydatid cysts of the leg: an unusual case report

We report a rare case of 50-year-old Moroccan woman with local recurrence of a subcutaneous hydatid cyst in proximity to the medial surface of the tibia and another cyst at the tibialis posterior muscle in the absence of liver, lung und spleen involvement. The first surgery was done in another hospital three years ago; no adjuvant treatment was performed after surgery. Recurrence was diagnosed according to the MRI appearance, serological and pathological findings. The patient underwent complete excision of the subcutaneous cyst with two centimeters of the medial gastrocnemius muscle; the tibialis posterior muscle cyst was intraoperatively drained and irrigated with scolicidal agent as it was next to the posterior tibial pedicle. A periopertive anthelmintic chemotherapy was administered. Two years after the patient showed no recurrence. This case report and literature review describe an approach to the diagnosis and management of this pathological entity

Contractor's performance appraisal system in the Malaysian construction industry: Current practice, perception and understanding

    Get PDF
Performance appraisal system is a common practice in any organisation to appraise performance of workers. In the Malaysian construction industry, performance appraisal system is applied to appraise contractor's performance in many angles including: quality performance; time performance; cost performance; environmental performance; health and safety performance; productivity performance; and human resources performance. This is where the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) established three guidelines in strengthening the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) by appraising the contractor's performance through identification of their weaknesses as well as drafting and offering suitable trainings in enhancing their performance. This paper is therefore undertaken with the objectives of: (1) determining the current practice of contractor's performance appraisal system in the Malaysian construction industry; and (2) examining the construction players' perception and understanding on the existing contractor's performance appraisal system in the Malaysian construction industry. A set of questionnaires is designed and distributed to 157 contractors from G1 to G7 class. The paper finds that: (1) contractor's performance appraisal system is benefiting the contractors yet should be improved for its efficiency; and (2) construction players have sufficient understanding on contractor's performance appraisal system. It is expected that the improvement of contractor's performance appraisal system via the findings of this paper would assist in achieving the three focuses of Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50), namely science and technology, urban prosperity as well as environment
