    Searching for emission-line galaxies: The UCM survey

    We are carrying out a long-term project with the main purposes of finding and analyzing low metallicity galaxies. A very small number of very low metallicity galaxies is known up to now. However these ojbects are particularly interesting since they are excellent candidates to 'young galaxies' in evolutionary sense as POX186 (Kunth, Maurogordato & Vigroux, 1988). Since the interstellar matter in these objects is only weakly contaminated by stellar evolution, their study could provide valuable information about the primordial helium abundance and therefore it could place constraints on the different Big-Bang models. The instrumental set up of our survey is an objective-prism used with the Schmidt telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. By using hypersensitized IIIaF emulsion and RG630 filter low resolution spectra in the H alpha region of objects in a wide field is obtained (Rego et al. 1989, Zamorano et al. 1990). Surveys carried out in the past two decades at optical blue wavelengths have also produced large samples of emission-line galaxies (ELGs), for example MacAlpine & Willians 1981 and reference therein, Wasilewski 1983, Salzer and MacAlpine 1988, or Smith et al. 1976. Relying primarily on objective-prism plates taken in the blue, these surveys have found over 3000 blue/emission-line galaxies so far. A significant number of star-forming galaxies are missed by optical surveys in the blue because of their low-excitation spectra (MacAlpine and Willians 1981, Markarian et al. 1981 and references therein) or their low metallicity (Kunth and Sargent, 1986)

Por este motivo, en este artículo se lleva a cabo una revisión del concepto de institución y de las principales críticas que ha recibido como paso previo al análisis más detallado del fenómeno desinstitucionalizador en la práctica psiquiátrica. Tal análisis lleva a la elaboración de una propuesta alternativa que cuestiona la pertinencia de seguir hablando de instituciones así como de procesos desinstitucionalizadores. Concretamente, se plantea que las especiales características de algunas prácticas psiquiátricas contemporáneas se ajustan mejor a la noción de ex-titución tomada de la obra de Serres

    Discovery of an emitting ring in the seyfert 1 galaxy UCM 2329+2500

    We analyze a rather interesting galaxy discovered during the UCM survey for new Hα emission-line galaxies. The new galaxy UCM 2329+2500 presents a compact core that hosts a Seyfert 1 nucleus. The spectrum of the Seyfert nucleus presents broad components (FWHM=8000 km s^-1) and asymmetric profiles at the Balmer lines showing a secondary peak more apparent on the Hβ line and also observed in the Hα deblended line. Only traces of profile variability have been detected during spectroscopic observations at four different dates spanning 29 months. Eight kpc away from the nucleus, a ring-like structure that surrounds the core is observed. A long slit spectrum at PA 45° has revealed emission lines coming from both sides of the ring. The emission detected is prominent at a condensation observed on the red image. Star formation is the most plausible explanation. A high obscuration is also observed. All this information is coherent with a galactic encounter scenario

    Observations of a complete sample of Hα emission-line galaxies. Long-slit spectroscopy of galaxies in UCM lists 1 and 2

    Spectroscopic observations for the full sample of Her emission-line galaxy candidates (ELGs) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid objective-prism survey Lists 1 and 2 have been obtained in order to investigate fully the properties of the survey constituents as well as the selection characteristics and completeness limits of the survey itself. The spectroscopic data include redshifts, line fluxes, equivalent widths, emission-line ratios, optical reddening estimates and synthesized color indexes. We find that 74% of the objects in this sample do exhibit emission Lines. We compare our observational data, with parameters given in the published survey lists in order to assess the usefulness of the latter. The different emission-line galaxies have been classified according to their spectra in several groups. Gray-scale images of the CCD spectra near the main emission lines, spatial profiles at the continuum and the Line for [OIII] λ5007 and Hα lines, as well as plots of the coadded spectra of selected galaxies are presented, and a number of peculiar objects are described

    Optical photometry of the UCM Lists I and II. II-B band surface photometry and morphological discussion

    We present Johnson B surface photometry for the UCM Survey galaxies. One-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition is attempted, discussing on fitting functions and computational procedures. The results from this decomposition, jointly with concentration indices and an asymmetry coefficient, are employed to study the morphological properties of these galaxies. We also compare our results with the previous morphological classification established using Gunn r imaging data and with other samples of galaxies. No major statistical differences in morphology are found between red and blue data, although some characteristics such as size and luminosity concentration vary. We find a correlation between luminosity and size.     Properties of UCM 2303+1702, a new seyfert 2 galaxy

    The galaxy UCM 2303 + 1702, not previously known, was identified during the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) objective-prism survey. The optical spectrum displays emission lines with a blueward asymmetry. Forbidden lines cover a wide range of ionization exhibiting full width at half maximum (FWHM) unusually broad. An analysis of ionization range and the emission line ratios measured in the spectrum leads to a Seyfert 2 classification. The contour map of isophotes of the CCD image shows an Sbc-Sc+ spiral, nearly face-on, in disagreement with previous works reporting an anticorrelation between the [0_III] line width and the Hubble morphological type in Seyfert parent galaxies.     Survey for emission-line galaxies: Universidad Complutense de Madrid list 2

    A low-dispersion objective-prism survey for low-redshift emission-line galaxies (ELGs) is being carried out by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the Schmidt telescope at the German-Spanish Observatory of Calar Alto (Almeria, Spain). A 4° full-aperture prism, which provides a dispersion of 1950 Å mm^-1, and IIIa-F emulsion combination has been used to search for ELGs selected by the presence of H_α emission in their spectra. A compilation of descriptions and positions, along with finding charts, is presented for 103 emission-line objects. This is the second list, which contains objects located ina region of the sky covering 201.4 deg^2 in seven fields near α = 15^h and δ = 25°

    Photometric and morphological analysis of UCM galaxies .2. Statistical results and interpretation

    We present the results of Thuan & Gunn r CCD imaging observations of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) sample of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) selected by the presence of H_α emission in low resolution objective-prism spectra. In this work, a total of 212 objects from the UCM survey have been photometrically and morphologically characterized. In a previous paper, the observations, basic reductions and morphological classification for the UCM objects were presented. Here, we analyse the statistical properties of the sample and their interpretations. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) Our survey is specially effective in the detection of ELGs smaller and less luminous than normal spirals (the median values of the UCM sample are M_r = -20.6 and D_24 = 19.4 kpc, for H_0 = 50 km s^-1 Mpc^-1). (2) The sample presents a very heterogeneous morphological population of galaxies. There is a clear predominance of late-type galaxies, with 66% being Sb or later. (3) We have found a set of galaxies specially interesting. In particular, we propose 9 candidates to BCD (blue compact dwarf galaxy), five of them previously unknown. (4) About 10% of the ELGs of the sample show typical parameters of S0 types, and in the subsample of 16 UCM interacting galaxies, 25% are S0 type galaxies. (5) In the set of UCM galaxies inside the Coma cluster, 71% exhibit Hubble types Sb or later

    UCM 2257+2438, a new narrow-line seyfert 1 galaxy

The optic spectroscopy, CCD imaging, near-infrared and IRAS photometric data suggest that this object is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 placed in the nucleus of a Sa nearly face-on galaxy with a significant contribution from starlight
