    Forum: Thinking Theoretically in Unsettled Times: COVID-19 and Beyond

    This collection of essays seeks to theorize the politics of the COVID-19 pandemic in international relations (IR). The contributions are driven by questions such as: How can theorizing help us understand these unsettled times? What kind of crisis is this? What shapes its politics? What remains the same and what has been unsettled or unsettling? In addressing such questions, each of the participants considers what we may already know about the pandemic as well as what might be ignored or missed. Collectively, the forum pushes at the interdisciplinary boundaries of IR theorizing itself and, in so doing, the participants hope to engender meaningful understandings of a world in crisis and encourage expansive ways of thinking about the times that lie beyond.</jats:p

    Alterations in Hemostasis Associated With Hyperthermia in a Canine Model

    Use of hyperthermia in the treatment of cancer and viral infection has received renewed interest. However, the in vivo relationship between hyperthermia and direct versus indirect effects upon hemostasis are incompletely defined, although we do know that disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a common sequel to heat stroke. The purpose of the present study was to more precisely define the relationship between hyperthermia and derangements of hemostasis, thereby providing a guideline for the development of safe hyperthermia treatment regimens. The present investigation examined the in vivo effects of high-grade whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) (42.5°C, 90 min) on hemostasis in a canine model. Induction of hyperthermia via extracorporeal circulation of heated blood (ECC-WBH) caused thrombocytopenia, increased plasma fibrin degradation products (FDPs), prolonged clotting times, increased serum liver enzymes, and evidence of spontaneous bleeding. However, when WBH was induced by peritoneal lavage (PL-WBH), transient thrombocytopenia was the only significant alteration. Temporal correlation between hemostatic alterations and elevations in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in the ECC-WBH treatment group suggested that liver injury is responsible, at least in part, for the coagulopathy associated with high-grade hyperthermia and that in the absence of liver injury, identical degrees of hyperthermia cause only incidental decreases in platelet numbers.     Diabetic neuropathic pain is a common and devastating complication of type 1 diabetes, but the mechanism by which it develops and persists is yet to be fully elucidated. This study utilised high-dimensional suspension mass cytometry in a pilot cohort to investigate differences in peripheral blood immunophenotypes between type 1 diabetes patients with (n ​= ​9) and without (n ​= ​9) peripheral neuropathic pain. The abundance and activation of several leukocyte subsets were investigated with unsupervised clustering approaches FlowSOM and SPADE, as well as by manual gating. Major findings included a proportional increase in CD4+ central memory T cells and an absolute increase in classical monocytes, non-classical monocytes, and mature natural killer cells in type 1 diabetes patients with pain compared to those without pain. The expression of CD27, CD127, and CD39 was upregulated on select T cell populations, and the phosphorylated form of pro-inflammatory transcription factor MK2 was upregulated across most populations. These results provide evidence that distinct immunological signatures are associated with painful neuropathy in type 1 diabetes patients. Further research may link these changes to mechanisms by which pain in type 1 diabetes is initiated and maintained, paving the way for much needed targeted treatments

    Three core concepts for producing uranium-233 in commercial pressurized light water reactors for possible use in water-cooled breeder reactors

    Selected prebreeder core concepts are described which could be backfit into a reference light water reactor similar to current commercial reactors, and produce uranium-233 for use in water-cooled breeder reactors. The prebreeder concepts were selected on the basis of minimizing fuel system development and reactor changes required to permit a backfit. The fuel assemblies for the prebreeder core concepts discussed would occupy the same space envelope as those in the reference core but contain a 19 by 19 array of fuel rods instead of the reference 17 by 17 array. An instrument well and 28 guide tubes for control rods have been allocated to each prebreeder fuel assembly in a pattern similar to that for the reference fuel assemblies. Backfit of these prebreeder concepts into the reference reactor would require changes only to the upper core support structure while providing flexibility for alternatives in the type of fuel used
