Critical behavior of ion mobilities near the superfluid transition
Measurements are reported of the mobilities of helium ions in superfluid helium very close to the λ transition. The mobilities of both positive and negative ions appear to be singular in the sense of having infinite slope at the transition. The measurements are made by a new differential technique, based on the space-charge-limited method, which makes possible a sensitivity to changes in mobility of the order of parts in 104. This allows mobility measurements into the range |ε|<10-4, where ε=(T/Tλ)-1. Most of the reported measurements are taken along isotherms which cross the λ line at elevated pressures, although a series at saturated vapor pressure is also reported. Means of transforming the data between various thermodynamic paths are discussed. Uncertainty as to which thermodynamic path should be considered fundamental together with experimental problems in the technique at this stage in its development make quantitative assessment of the singularity difficult. However, if we assume a limiting form (μ-μλ)/μλ∼(-ε)ρ′, where μ is the mobility and μλ its value at the transition, we find for the exponent ρ′=0.94±0.02
Relationship between NOX4 level and angiotensin II signaling in Gitelman's syndrome. Implications with hypertension
Recent evidence showed that endogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase 4 (NOX4) may exert a protective role on the cardiovascular system inducing vasodilation, reduction of blood pressure, and anti-proliferative actions. However, the functional significance of NOX4 in the cardiovascular system in humans remains elusive. Mononuclear cell levels of NOX4 were assessed by immunoblotting in 14 Gitelman's patients (GS), a unique human model of endogenous Ang II signaling antagonism and activation of anti-atherosclerotic and anti-remodeling defenses, and compared to 11 untreated essential hypertensive patients as well as to 11 healthy normotensive subjects. The association between NOX4 and its effector heme oxygenase (HO-1) (sandwich immunoassay) was also evaluated. NOX4 protein levels were decreased in hypertensive patients as compared to both GS and healthy subjects (1.06±0.31 AU vs. 1.76±0.54, P=0.002 and vs. 1.61±0.54, P=0.018, respectively). NOX4 protein level did not differ between GS and healthy subjects. HO-1 levels were increased in GS patients as compared to both hypertensive patients and healthy subjects (8.65±3.08 ng/ml vs 3.70±1.19, P<0.0001, and vs 5.49±1.04, P=0.008, respectively. NOX4 levels correlate with HO-1 levels only in GS (r(2)=0.63; P=0.001), (r(2)=0.088; P=ns, in hypertensive patients and r(2)=0.082; P=ns, in healthy subjects). Our findings show that NOX4 and its effector HO-1 are reduced in hypertensive patients compared to GS patients, a human model opposite to hypertension. Although the functional significance of NOX4 needs further clarification, our preliminary data in a unique human model of anti-atherosclerotic and anti-remodeling defenses activation, highlight the potentially protective role of NOX4 in the human cardiovascular system
The challenge of perioperative pain management in opioid-tolerant patients
The increasing number of opioid users among chronic pain patients, and opioid abusers among the general population, makes perioperative pain management challenging for health care professionals. Anesthesiologists, surgeons, and nurses should be familiar with some pharmacological phenomena which are typical of opioid users and abusers, such as tolerance, physical dependence, hyperalgesia, and addiction. Inadequate pain management is very common in these patients, due to common prejudices and fears. The target of preoperative evaluation is to identify comorbidities and risk factors and recognize signs and symptoms of opioid abuse and opioid withdrawal. Clinicians are encouraged to plan perioperative pain medications and to refer these patients to psychiatrists and addiction specialists for their evaluation. The aim of this review was to give practical suggestions for perioperative management of surgical opioid-tolerant patients, together with schemes of opioid conversion for chronic pain patients assuming oral or transdermal opioids, and patients under maintenance programs with methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone
Iterative hierarchical clustering algorithm for automated operational modal analysis
Recent developments in sensors and data processing made the structural health monitoring (SHM) sector expanding to big-data field, particularly when continuous long-term strategies are implemented. Nevertheless, main shortcomings are due to the identification and extraction of modal features. In fact, although machine learning methods have been implemented to automate modal identification processes, intense user interaction and time-consuming procedures are still required, limiting the extensive use of these techniques. In order to provide a fully automated procedure capable of identifying and extracting modal properties from covariance driven SSI analyses, an innovative and flexible algorithm for Iterative Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (IHCA) is proposed. To evaluate the stability and robustness of the IHCA method, a Variance-Based Global sensitivity Analysis (VBGA) was performed considering a numerical and experimental case study. The outcomes demonstrated that the IHCA is stable in clustering the physical structural modes and selecting the most representative modal features
SASICE: Safety and sustainability in civil engineering
The performance of the built environment and the construction sector are of major importance in Europe’s long term goals of sustainable development in a changing climate. At the same time, the quality of life of all European citizens needs to be improved and the safety of the built environment with respect to man-made and natural hazards, such as flooding and earthquakes, needs to be ensured. Education has a central role to play in the transformation of a construction sector required to meet increasing demands with regard to safety and sustainability. In this work, the SASICE project is presented. The aim of this project is to promote the integration of safety and sustainability in civil engineering education. The project is organised in the context of the Lifelong Learning Programme, funded by the European Community. The coordinator organisation is the University of Bologna. Nine partner universities from different countries are involved in this transnational project. The universities participating to the project constitute a network of high level competences in the civil engineering area, with several opportunities to improve lifelong learning adopting different media: joint curricula, teaching modules and professor and student exchanges. As a response to the challenge regarding new educational methods in sustainable engineering, teaching modules are developed in 4 thematic areas: (1) Safety in construction, (2) Risk induced by Natural Hazards Assessment, (3) Sustainability in construction, and (4) Sustainability at the territorial level. The development of the teaching modules is based on an extensive analysis of the need for highly qualified education on Safety and Sustainability involving all relevant stakeholders (European and national authorities, companies, research institutes, professional organizations, and universities).The main target is enabling students to introduce these advanced topics in their study plans and curricula and reach, at the end of their studies, a specific skill and expertise in safety and sustainability in Civil Engineering. With our natural resources fading away and our infrastructure in dire need of repair, new trends and challenges in civil engineering education in the concept of “Sustainable Development” are needed to be adressed.<br/
Evaluation of a School Campaign to Reduce Hatred
Combating violent extremism can involve organizing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) preventing violent extremism (PVE) programs and campaigns. In recent years, hundreds of school campaigns have been launched around the world but very few have been evaluated. In this manuscript, we present the results of the evaluation of one of these initiatives. Study objectives consisted of: 1) Assessing the impact of the campaign in increasing students’ exposure to messages of acceptance and decreasing exposure to hate messages in the school environment, 2) Assess the impact of the campaign in improving students’ attitudes towards ethnocultural diversity. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study with control groups. The study was implemented in Utah in schools of 8th and 9th-grade levels. Two schools were identified as campaign implementation sites, and two schools of similar socio-economic and ethnocultural characteristics were identified as the control sites. We utilized univariate and multivariate regression analysis to assess changes in students’ exposure to hate messages and attitudes towards ethnocultural diversity. Our study findings can be useful for the development of future campaigns and educational programs as they highlight the importance of ethnocultural empathic awareness in improving students’ attitudes regarding ethnocultural diversity
Analytical Study of Sub-Wavelength Imaging by Uniaxial Epsilon-Near-Zero Metamaterial Slabs
We discuss the imaging properties of uniaxial epsilon-near-zero metamaterial
slabs with possibly tilted optical axis, analyzing their sub-wavelength
focusing properties as a function of the design parameters. We derive in closed
analytical form the associated two-dimensional Green's function in terms of
special cylindrical functions. For the near-field parameter ranges of interest,
we are also able to derive a small-argument approximation in terms of simpler
analytical functions. Our results, validated and calibrated against a full-wave
reference solution, expand the analytical tools available for
computationally-efficient and physically-incisive modeling and design of
