    Aconite is one of the most poisonous known herbs. It has been known to be used as a homicidal poison from long time in history. However this is rarely known to be used as suicidal poison. Poisoning with aconite is usually fatal and death commonly occurs due to arrhythmias and cardiotoxicity. We report a case of attempted suicidal poisoning by aconite where patient survived in spite of documented cardiotoxic effects of the poison

    Differences in transmission mechanisms can generate asymmetric behaviour among currency union partners when they experience shocks. This has the potential to widen existing cyclical variation between members of a currency union. Our analysis suggests that the transmission mechanisms of GDP and the CPI of a monetary shock appear to be similar in Australia and New Zealand. However, there are differences in terms of the size of the responses of some variables to identical monetary policy shocks. In a currency union with a different exchange rate pattern and with different monetary policy shocks, New Zealand may experience some new challenges.Impulse responses; vector error correction; monetary transmission mechanism

    Modeling highly pathogenic avian influenza transmission in wild birds and poultry in West Bengal, India.

    Wild birds are suspected to have played a role in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 outbreaks in West Bengal. Cluster analysis showed that H5N1 was introduced in West Bengal at least 3 times between 2008 and 2010. We simulated the introduction of H5N1 by wild birds and their contact with poultry through a stochastic continuous-time mathematical model. Results showed that reducing contact between wild birds and domestic poultry, and increasing the culling rate of infected domestic poultry communities will reduce the probability of outbreaks. Poultry communities that shared habitat with wild birds or those indistricts with previous outbreaks were more likely to suffer an outbreak. These results indicate that wild birds can introduce HPAI to domestic poultry and that limiting their contact at shared habitats together with swift culling of infected domestic poultry can greatly reduce the likelihood of HPAI outbreaks

    URAT1 (slc22a12) was identified as the transporter responsible for renal reabsorption of the medically important compound, uric acid. However, subsequent studies have indicated that other transporters make contributions to this process, and that URAT1 transports other organic anions besides urate (including several in common with the closely related multi-specific renal organic anion transporters, OAT1 (slc22a6) and OAT3 (slc22a8)). These findings raise the possibility that urate transport is not the sole physiological function of URAT1. We previously characterized mice null for the murine ortholog of URAT1 (mURAT1; previously cloned as RST), finding a relatively modest decrement in urate reabsorptive capacity. Nevertheless, there were shifts in the plasma and urinary concentrations of multiple small molecules, suggesting significant metabolic changes in the knockouts. Although these molecules remain unidentified, here we have computationally delineated the biochemical networks consistent with transcriptomic data from the null mice. These analyses suggest alterations in the handling of not only urate but also other putative URAT1 substrates comprising intermediates in nucleotide, carbohydrate, and steroid metabolism. Moreover, the analyses indicate changes in multiple other pathways, including those relating to the metabolism of glycosaminoglycans, methionine, and coenzyme A, possibly reflecting downstream effects of URAT1 loss. Taken together with the available substrate and metabolomic data for the other OATs, our findings suggest that the transport and biochemical functions of URAT1 overlap those of OAT1 and OAT3, and could contribute to our understanding of the relationship between uric acid and the various metabolic disorders to which it has been linked

    Tension fatigue of glass/epoxy and graphite/epoxy tapered laminates

    Symmetric tapered laminates with internally dropped plies were tested with two different layups and two materials, S2/SP250 glass/epoxy and IM6/1827I graphite/epoxy. The specimens were loaded in cyclic tension until they delaminated unstably. Each combination of material and layup had a unique failure mode. Calculated values of strain energy release rate, G, from a finite element analysis model of delamination along the taper, and for delamination from a matrix ply crack, were used with mode I fatigue characterization data from tests of the tested materials to calculate expected delamination onset loads. Calculated values were compared to the experimental results. The comparison showed that when the calculated G was chosen according to the observed delamination failures, the agreement between the calculated and measured delamination onset loads was reasonable for each combination of layup and material

    Watermelon seed extract inhibits protein aggregation and formation of advanced glycation end-products

    BACKGROUND: Glycation of proteins is a key element in the onset of diabetes consequences. The potential of medicinal plants to inhibit the progression of glycation complications provides a significant opportunity as an alternative therapy. METHODS: The effect of watermelon seed extract (WMSE) on antioxidant capacity was assessed based on radical scavenging activity and metal chelation activity. Further the inhibition of Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) formation was assessed by using different sources of amine (haemoglobin, bovine serum albumin, G.K peptide) and sugar sources (δ-gluconolactone, methylglyoxal, ribose). Aminoguanidine (AG) used as standard drug. RESULTS: Due to the presence of various phytochemicals that could disrupt the chain of events and prevent the development of AGEs, WMSE demonstrated its potential inhibitory effects at every step of protein glycation. A key part of this response is the scavenging of free radicals produced by glycation. CONCLUSION: The WMSE may aid to give a protective effect against protein degradation caused by hyperglycemia, which may be helpful in the treatment of problems associated with diabetes

    Absence of Nonlocal Counter-terms in the Gauge Boson Propagator in Axial -type Gauges

    We study the two-point function for the gauge boson in the axial-type gauges. We use the exact treatment of the axial gauges recently proposed that is intrinsically compatible with the Lorentz type gauges in the path-integral formulation and has been arrived at from this connection and which is a ``one-vector'' treatment. We find that in this treatment, we can evaluate the two-point functions without imposing any additional interpretation on the axial gauge 1/(n.q)^p-type poles. The calculations are as easy as the other treatments based on other known prescriptions. Unlike the ``uniform-prescription'' /L-M prescription, we note, here, the absence of any non-local divergences in the 2-point proper vertex. We correlate our calculation with that for the Cauchy Principal Value prescription and find from this comparison that the 2-point proper vertex differs from the CPV calculation only by finite terms. For simplicity of treatment, the divergences have been calculated here with n^2>0 and these have a smooth light cone limit.Comment: 17 pages; 3 figures drawn using feyn.st
