    Ultrafast sensing of photoconductivity decay using microwave resonators

    Microwave reflectance probed photoconductivity (or μ\mu-PCD) measurement represents a contactless and non-invasive method to characterize impurity content in semiconductors. Major drawbacks of the method include a difficult separation of reflectance due to dielectric and conduction effects and that the μ\mu-PCD signal is prohibitively weak for highly conducting samples. Both of these limitations could be tackled with the use of microwave resonators due to the well-known sensitivity of resonator parameters to minute changes in the material properties combined with a null measurement. A general misconception is that time resolution of resonator measurements is limited beyond their bandwidth by the readout electronics response time. While it is true for conventional resonator measurements, such as those employing a frequency sweep, we present a time-resolved resonator parameter readout method which overcomes these limitations and allows measurement of complex material parameters and to enhance μ\mu-PCD signals with the ultimate time resolution limit being the resonator time constant. This is achieved by detecting the transient response of microwave resonators on the timescale of a few 100 ns \emph{during} the μ\mu-PCD decay signal. The method employs a high-stability oscillator working with a fixed frequency which results in a stable and highly accurate measurement.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures+Supplementary Material

    Absztrakt Extracelluláris vesiculák minden szervezetben képződnek. Három legintenzívebben vizsgált csoportjuk az apoptotikus testek, a microvesiculák és az exosomák. A sejtek közötti kommunikációban, immunreakciókban, angiogenezisben betöltött szerepük csak néhány az eddig megismertek közül. A fiziológiás folyamatok mellett sokféle betegségben leírták változásaikat; a patomechanizmusban betöltött szerepük mellett felvetődik potenciális használatuk biomarkerekként. A szerzők betekintést kívánnak nyújtani az extracelluláris vesiculák kutatásába, kiemelve azt a néhány tanulmányt, amely a hematológiai malignitásokra fókuszált. A microvesiculák és exosomák vérplazmában mért mennyisége, a terápia során megfigyelt minőségi változása miatt felmerült, hogy a diagnosztikában, prognosztikában, illetve a minimális residualis betegség monitorozásában is használhatók lehetnek. Akut myeloid leukaemiában a természetes ölősejtek aktivitásának szupresszálásában bizonyított a blasteredetű exosomák szerepe. Krónikus lymphoid leukaemiában a microvesiculák közreműködése valószínű a gyógyszer-rezisztencia kialakulásában is. Orv. The most intensively investigated categories of extracellular vesicles include apoptotic bodies, microvesicles and exosomes. Among a very wide range of areas, their role has been confirmed in intercellular communication, immune response and angiogenesis (in both physiological and pathological conditions). Their alterations suggest the potential use of them as biomarkers. In this paper the authors give an insight into the research of extracellular vesicles in general, and then focus on published findings in hematological malignancies. Quantitative and qualitative changes of microvesicles and exosomes may have value in diagnostics, prognostics and minimal residual disease monitoring of hematological malignancies. The function of extracellular vesicles in downregulation of natural killer cells’ activity has been demonstrated in acute myeloid leukemia.     Tidally locked rotation of the dwarf planet (136199) Eris discovered from long-term ground based and space photometry

    The rotational states of the members in the dwarf planet - satellite systems in the transneptunian region are determined by the formation conditions and the tidal interaction between the components, and these rotational characteristics are the prime tracers of their evolution. Previously a number of authors claimed highly diverse values for the rotation period for the dwarf planet Eris, ranging from a few hours to a rotation (nearly) synchronous with the orbital period (15.8 d) of its satellite, Dysnomia. In this letter we present new light curve data of Eris, taken with \sim1-2m-class ground based telescopes, and with the TESS and Gaia space telescopes. TESS data could not provide a well-defined light curve period, but could constrain light curve variations to a maximum possible light curve amplitude of Δm\Delta m \leq 0.03 mag (1-σ\sigma) for P \leq 24 h periods. Both the combined ground-based data and the Gaia measurements unambiguously point to a light curve period equal to the orbital period of Dysnomia, P = 15.8 d, with a light curve amplitude of Δm\Delta m \approx 0.03 mag, i.e. the rotation of Eris is tidally locked. Assuming that Dysnomia has a collisional origin, calculations with a simple tidal evolution model show that Dysnomia has to be relatively massive (mass ratio of q = 0.01--0.03) and large (radius of RsR_s \geq 300 km) to slow down Eris to synchronized rotation. These simulations also indicate that -- assuming tidal parameters usually considered for transneptunian objects -- the density of Dysnomia should be 1.8-2.4 gcm3g cm^{-3}, an exceptionally high value among similarly sized transneptunian objects, putting important constraints on the formation conditions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, data of tables A.1, A.2 and A.4 are available at https://cloud.konkoly.hu/s/ESiKi4GZyifJmj

    Pro- and anti-inflammatory factors, vascular stiffness and outcomes in chronic hemodialysis patients

    In this observational study we addressed accelerated arteriosclerosis (AS) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on hemodialysis (HD) by measuring vascular stiffness (VS) parameters and attempted to relate them to pro-inflammatory and protective factors.96 consecutive patients receiving regular HD were included. 20 adult patients without major renal, cardiovascular or metabolic morbidities served as controls.AS parameters (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity - PWV, aortic augmentation index - Aix) were measured by using applanation tonometry (SphygmoCor, AtCor Medical, Sidney). In addition to routine laboratory tests 25(OH) vitamin D3 (vitamin D3) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) were quantified by immunometric assay; whereas fetuin-A, α-Klotho, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) were determined by ELISA.Pro-inflammatory biomarkers (hsCRP, TNF-α and TGF-β1) were markedly elevated (P < 0.01), while anti-inflammatory factors (fetuin-A: P < 0.05, α-Klotho: P < 0.01, vitamin D3: P < 0.01) significantly depressed in HD patients when compared to controls. PWV was significantly affected only by total cholesterol, fetuin-A and dialysis time. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that several clinical and laboratory parameters were associated with pro- and anti-inflammatory biomarkers rather than VS. The impact of baseline clinical and biochemical variables on outcome measures were also analyzed after three-year follow-up, and it was demonstrated that low levels of vitamin D, α-Klotho protein and fetuin-A were related to adverse cardiovascular outcomes, whereas all-cause mortality was associated with elevated hsCRP and depressed vitamin D.Our results provide additional information on the pathomechanism of accelerated AS in patients with CRF, and documented direct influence of pro- and anti-inflammatory biomarkers on major outcome measures

    Új és hagyományos irányok a gyermekkori akut lymphoblastos leukaemia biológiájában és ellátásában

    Owing to clinical trials and improvement over the past few decades, the majority of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survive by first-line chemotherapy and combat with the problems of returning to community. However, many patients may have severe acute or late therapeutic side effects, and the survival rate in some groups (e.g., patients with MLL rearrangements, hypodiploidy, IKZF1 mutation or early precursor T cell phenotype) is far behind the average. Innovative strategies in medical attendance provide better clinical outcomes for them: complete gene diagnostics, molecularly targeted anticancer treatment, immuno-oncology and immune cell therapy. The number of genes with identified alterations in leukemic lymphoblasts is over thirty and their pathobiologic role is only partly clear. There are known patient groups where the use of specific drugs is based on gene expression profiling (e.g., tyrosine kinase inhibitors in Philadelphia-like B-cell ALL). The continuous assessment of minimal residual disease became a routine due to the determination of a leukemia-associated immunophenotype by flow cytometry or a sensitive molecular marker by molecular genetics at diagnosis. Epitopes of cluster differentiation antigens on blast surface (primarily CD19, CD20 and CD22 on malignant B cells) can be attacked by monoclonal antibodies. Moreover, antitumor immunity can be strengthened utilizing either cell surface markers (bispecific T cell engagers, chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy) or tumor-specific immune cells (immune checkpoint inhibitors).     Complexity of equational theory of relational algebras with standard projection elements

    The class TPA\mathsf{TPA} of t rue p airing a lgebras is defined to be the class of relation algebras expanded with concrete set theoretical projection functions. The main results of the present paper is that neither the equational theory of TPA\mathsf{TPA} nor the first order theory of TPA\mathsf{TPA} are decidable. Moreover, we show that the set of all equations valid in TPA\mathsf{TPA} is exactly on the Π11\Pi ^1_1 level. We consider the class TPA\mathsf{TPA}^- of the relation algebra reducts of TPA\mathsf{TPA}’s, as well. We prove that the equational theory of TPA\mathsf{TPA}^- is much simpler, namely, it is recursively enumerable. We also give motivation for our results and some connections to related work

In this Letter, we present new light curve data for Eris, taken with ∼1–2 m-class ground based telescopes and with the TESS and Gaia space telescopes. The TESS data did not provide a well-defined light curve period, but it could be used to constrain light curve variations to a maximum possible light curve amplitude of Δm ≤ 0.03 mag (1-σ) for P ≤ 24 h periods. Both the combined ground-based data and Gaia measurements unambiguously point to a light curve period equal to the orbital period of Dysnomia, P = 15.8 d, with a light curve amplitude of Δm ≈ 0.03 mag, indicating that the rotation of Eris is tidally locked. Assuming that Dysnomia has a collisional origin, calculations with a simple tidal evolution model show that Dysnomia must be relatively massive (mass ratio of q = 0.01–0.03) and large (radius of Rs ≥ 300 km) to have the potential to slow Eris down to a synchronised rotation. These simulations also indicate that (assuming tidal parameters usually considered for trans-Neptunian objects) the density of Dysnomia should be 1.8–2.4 g cm−3.     Discovery of nucleotide polymorphisms in the Musa gene pool by Ecotilling

    Musa (banana and plantain) is an important genus for the global export market and in local markets where it provides staple food for approximately 400 million people. Hybridization and polyploidization of several (sub)species, combined with vegetative propagation and human selection have produced a complex genetic history. We describe the application of the Ecotilling method for the discovery and characterization of nucleotide polymorphisms in diploid and polyploid accessions of Musa. We discovered over 800 novel alleles in 80 accessions. Sequencing and band evaluation shows Ecotilling to be a robust and accurate platform for the discovery of polymorphisms in homologous and homeologous gene targets. In the process of validating the method, we identified two single nucleotide polymorphisms that may be deleterious for the function of a gene putatively important for phototropism. Evaluation of heterozygous polymorphism and haplotype blocks revealed a high level of nucleotide diversity in Musa accessions. We further applied a strategy for the simultaneous discovery of heterozygous and homozygous polymorphisms in diploid accessions to rapidly evaluate nucleotide diversity in accessions of the same genome type. This strategy can be used to develop hypotheses for inheritance patterns of nucleotide polymorphisms within and between genome types. We conclude that Ecotilling is suitable for diversity studies in Musa, that it can be considered for functional genomics studies and as tool in selecting germplasm for traditional and mutation breeding approaches
