    First faunistic results on Valencia (Cresques) Seamount, with some ecological considerations

    The living and dead fauna of Valencia Seamount, a deep promontory in the middle of the Balearic Basin which summit is at ca. 1100m depth, is described by first time based in a rock dredge perfomed in a sedimentary area of the summit Mount. Surface-feeder polychaetes (the Paraonidae Levinsenia gracilis and Terebellidae as dominant), and taxodont bivalves (Ledella messanensis and Yoldiella ovulum) were the main species of benthos. We found alive remains of the bamboo coral Isidella elongata, a vulnerable, habitat-forming species in the deep Mediterranean. Benthos density was low (0.6 organisms/2 dm3 mud). Thanatocoenosis evidenced a rather moderate diversity on benthic bivalves (11 species) and gastropods (9 species) also dominated by surface deposit feeders. Fish (identified/ quantified from sedimented otoliths) showed diversified and abundant mesopelagic fauna, mainly Myctophidae. More interestingly, we highlighted among benthopelagic fish the occurrence of recruits of Merluccius merluccius, Micromesistius poutassou, or Hymenocephalus italicus, all species that live in the neighboring slopes of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands at quite shallower depths (at 100-700 m) than their distribution in the Valencia Seamount summit (1102–1130 m) based on the deposited otoliths found. Some ecological aspects were discussed and the necessity to consider the deep Valencia Seamount as a potential area that should be under protection.En prensa

    Thermal Remote Sensing for Global Volcano Monitoring: Experiences From the MIROVA System

    Volcanic activity is always accompanied by the transfer of heat from the Earth’s crust to the atmosphere. This heat can be measured from space and its measurement is a very useful tool for detecting volcanic activity on a global scale. MIROVA (Middle Infrared Observation of Volcanic Activity) is an automatic volcano hot spot detection system, based on the analysis of MODIS data (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). The system is able to detect, locate and quantify thermal anomalies in near real-time, by providing, on a dedicated website (www.mirovaweb.it), infrared images and thermal flux time-series on over 200 volcanoes worldwide. Thanks to its simple interface and intuitive representation of the data, MIROVA is currently used by several volcano observatories for daily monitoring activities and reporting. In this paper, we present the architecture of the system and we provide a state of the art on satellite thermal data usage for operational volcano monitoring and research. In particular, we describe the contribution that the thermal data have provided in order to detect volcanic unrest, to forecast eruptions and to depict trends and patterns during eruptive crisis. The current limits and requirements to improve the quality of the data, their distribution and interpretation are also discussed, in the light of the experience gained in recent years within the volcanological community. The results presented clearly demonstrate how the open access of satellite thermal data and the sharing of derived products allow a better understanding of ongoing volcanic phenomena, and therefore constitute an essential requirement for the assessment of volcanic hazards

    A Link among DNA Replication, Recombination, and Gene Expression Revealed by Genetic and Genomic Analysis of TEBICHI Gene of Arabidopsis thaliana

    Spatio-temporal regulation of gene expression during development depends on many factors. Mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana TEBICHI (TEB) gene encoding putative helicase and DNA polymerase domains-containing protein result in defects in meristem maintenance and correct organ formation, as well as constitutive DNA damage response and a defect in cell cycle progression; but the molecular link between these phenotypes of teb mutants is unknown. Here, we show that mutations in the DNA replication checkpoint pathway gene, ATR, but not in ATM gene, enhance developmental phenotypes of teb mutants, although atr suppresses cell cycle defect of teb mutants. Developmental phenotypes of teb mutants are also enhanced by mutations in RAD51D and XRCC2 gene, which are involved in homologous recombination. teb and teb atr double mutants exhibit defects in adaxial-abaxial polarity of leaves, which is caused in part by the upregulation of ETTIN (ETT)/AUXIN RESPONSIVE FACTOR 3 (ARF3) and ARF4 genes. The Helitron transposon in the upstream of ETT/ARF3 gene is likely to be involved in the upregulation of ETT/ARF3 in teb. Microarray analysis indicated that teb and teb atr causes preferential upregulation of genes nearby the Helitron transposons. Furthermore, interestingly, duplicated genes, especially tandemly arrayed homologous genes, are highly upregulated in teb or teb atr. We conclude that TEB is required for normal progression of DNA replication and for correct expression of genes during development. Interplay between these two functions and possible mechanism leading to altered expression of specific genes will be discussed

    Structural, optical, and magnetic characterization of monodisperse Fe-doped ZnO nanocrystals

    The results on the synthesis and characterization of highly monodisperse Fe-doped ZnO nanocrystals are presented. Stable suspensions of these materials were produced in an ethanol solution at room temperature. To promote crystal growth, the suspensions of nanocrystals were aged in contact with their mother liquors. X-ray diffraction characterization of doped systems at various Fe-atomic fractions x confirmed the exclusive formation of the host ZnO with the wurtzite structure. High resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses of the suspensions revealed the high monodispersity and crystallinity of the 6?8 nm nanocrystals. Ultraviolet-visible measurements confirmed not only the nanocrystalline nature of the samples but also evidenced the continuous growth of the crystals when aged in their mother liquors. Room-temperature magnetic measurements indicated that the ferromagnetic behavior of doped ZnO was dependent on composition and crystal size of produced nanocrystals. Room-temperature ferromagnetism was established in the nanocrystals synthesized at x=0.05 and 0.08 aged for 24 and 360 h, respectively.     Se ha realizado una monografía sobre los aspectos más importantes a tener en cuenta cuando se desee crear una Institución Prestadora de servicios de salud del primer nivel de atención de acuerdo con los lineamientos del nuevo sistema de Seguridad Social Integral creada en Colombia por la Ley 100 de 1993. La monografía analiza las aspectos más importantes a tener en cuenta por los gestores de una I.P.S del primer nivel de atención, como son: mercadeo en salud, planeación estratégica, sistemas de calidad, estructura orgánica, gerencia de la información, constitución legal y licenciamiento. En el desarrollo de los temas se utilizó un lenguaje de fácil comprensión para los que inician la idea. Quedan algunos contenidos sin analizar pero los expuestos representan los fundamentos que garantizan una gestión exitosa para cualquier empresa
