The modern coastal dune systems of the Balearic Islands are characterized by a high vegetation cover and, as a consequence, a wide presence of parabolic dunes. Lunate, lobate, hemiciclic, en-echelon, digitate, superimposed and nested dunes are arranged in a complex setting. They relates not only with the modern eolian processes -special emphasis have to be marked in the state of foredune conservation- but also with the changes that have taken place during quaternary times

The building of a marina at the west end of the beach seems to be the main cause of the shoreline backward movement, furthermore recreation activities in summer time. Aerial photograph and fieldwork have allowed a cartography showing the shoreline evolution since 1968. The final outcome has been a ratio of 1,3 m/year of beach acretion at the nearest zone of the harbour and 0,7 m/year of beach erosion in the rest of the beach

Evolutionary Behavior Tree Approaches for Navigating Platform Games

Computer games are highly dynamic environments, where players are faced with a multitude of potentially unseen scenarios. In this article, AI controllers are applied to the Mario AI Benchmark platform, by using the Grammatical Evolution system to evolve Behavior Tree structures. These controllers are either evolved to both deal with navigation and reactiveness to elements of the game, or used in conjunction with a dynamic A* approach. The results obtained highlight the applicability of Behavior Trees as representations for evolutionary computation, and their flexibility for incorporation of diverse algorithms to deal with specific aspects of bot control in game environments

In vivo toxicity study of phage lysate in chickens

    1. Bacteriophage (phage) crude lysate of Gram-negative bacteria often contains bacterial debris, including lipopolysaccharides found in the outer membrane of the cell wall, which are potentially toxic. 2. In this study, an in vivo evaluation of the toxicity of a suspension of three phages to control pathogenic Escherichia coli strains in poultry was performed. 3. Eighteen commercial layers, 7 weeks old, were intramuscularly injected with phage lysate (8.21x10 4 Endotoxin Units/dose). The control group was injected with sterile Luria Bertani (LB) broth. 4. Bird prostration and decrease in body weight gain and water intake per gram of body weight were observed only on the day of the inoculation in the challenged group. Over the following 6 d, no differences were observed in the chickens’ activity. 5. These results support the view that phage crude lysate carrying endotoxins are not toxic for chickens.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Deformations des feuilletages transversalement holomorphes a type differentiable fixe

Let F be a transversely holomorphic foliation on a compact manifold. We show the existence of a versal space for those deformations of F which keep fixed its differentiable type if F is hermitian or if F has complex codimension one and admits a transverse projectable connection. We also prove the existence of a versal space of deformations for the complex structures on a Lie group invariant by a cocompact subgroup

Cultural continuities and discontinuities at the Neolithic transition in Eastern Iberia: an analysis of the morphometry of geometric microliths

The main goal of this paper is to explore possible cultural continuities and discontinuities at the Neolithic transition in Eastern Iberia. To address this issue, we introduce a twofold methodology, consisting of Geometric Morphometrics and the use of the self-developed Geomeasure system, to examine evolutionary patterns in geometric microliths. These are a specific type of arrowhead shared by both the last hunter-gatherers and the first farmers from two reference sites in the region: Cueva de la Cocina and Cova de l’Or (Eastern Iberia). Although advances in research have contributed to a better comprehension of this process, there are still unanswered questions, especially when the study is approached from a regional perspective. Such is the case for the Neolithisation of the Eastern Iberian Peninsula, and the way in which the previous Mesolithic population interacted—if they interacted at all—with the first farmers. In this case, some sites present archaeological contexts that have been catalogued as acculturation contexts. This has traditionally been the case for phase C of Cueva de la Cocina (Spain), although recent research points to the possibility that the content of this specific deposit is the result of post-depositional processes. Here we try first to understand the cultural evolutionary patterns and relations between the different geometric microlith technocomplexes and, second, to address the specific problem of the interpretation of taphonomic disturbances in the archaeological record. We use the Cueva de l’Or and the Cueva de la Cocina for comparison, and our conclusions raise serious doubts about the existence of an acculturation phase at the latter
