    Strength of Mechanical Memories is Maximal at the Yield Point of a Soft Glass

    We show experimentally that both single and multiple mechanical memories can be encoded in an amorphous bubble raft, a prototypical soft glass, subject to an oscillatory strain. In line with recent numerical results, we find that multiple memories can be formed sans external noise. By systematically investigating memory formation for a range of training strain amplitudes spanning yield, we find clear signatures of memory even beyond yielding. Most strikingly, the extent to which the system recollects memory is largest for training amplitudes near the yield strain and is a direct consequence of the spatial extent over which the system reorganizes during the encoding process. Our study further suggests that the evolution of force networks on training plays a decisive role in memory formation in jammed packings.Comment: 13 pages, 4 Figure

    Analysis of the role of Arabidopsis class I TCP genes AtTCP7, AtTCP8, AtTCP22, and AtTCP23 in leaf development

    TCP family of plant-specific transcription factors regulates plant form through control of cell proliferation and differentiation. This gene family is comprised of two groups, class I and class II. While the role of class II TCP genes in plant development is well known, data about the function of some class I TCP genes is lacking. We studied a group of phylogenetically related class I TCP genes: AtTCP7, AtTCP8, AtTCP22, and AtTCP23. The similar expression pattern in young growing leaves found for this group suggests similarity in gene function. Gene redundancy is characteristic in this group, as also seen in the class II TCP genes. We generated a pentuple mutant tcp8 tcp15 tcp21 tcp22 tcp23 and show that loss of function of these genes results in changes in leaf developmental traits. We also determined that these factors are able to mutually interact in a yeast two-hybrid assay and regulate the expression of KNOX1 genes. To circumvent the issue of genetic redundancy, dominant negative forms with SRDX repressor domain were used. Analysis of transgenic plants expressing AtTCP7-SRDX and AtTCP23-SRDX indicate a role of these factors in the control of cell proliferation

Rasayana Chikitsa plays a key role in the treatment of all the diseases (both in curative and preventive). There is nothing painful and stressful to women, for not being conceived. In the present modern era, female infertility is raised to the alarming extent due to diet & lifestyle modifications. Couples suffering from the infertility are approaching the infertility centres and going for the artificial reproductive techniques (IUI, IVF, ICSI-ET, Sarogasy). Ayurveda, through its unique line of treatment approaches, paves the way for fertility management through the medicines along with diet & lifestyle modifications. The Commonest cause for fertility being the Hypothyroidism in females (in this present study, I have considered hypothyroidism as Rasa pradosaja vyadi), clinical study was done at OPD, DR. BRKR Govt Ayurvedic College, Hyderabad and treated the patient with Dipana, Pachana, Rasayana Chikitsa and the patient conceived.     Bounds on Cross-sections and Lifetimes for Dark Matter Annihilation and Decay into Charged Leptons from Gamma-ray Observations of Dwarf Galaxies

    We provide conservative bounds on the dark matter cross-section and lifetime from final state radiation produced by annihilation or decay into charged leptons, either directly or via an intermediate particle ϕ\phi. Our analysis utilizes the experimental gamma-ray flux upper limits from four Milky Way dwarf satellites: HESS observations of Sagittarius and VERITAS observations of Draco, Ursa Minor, and Willman 1. Using 90% confidence level lower limits on the integrals over the dark matter distributions, we find that these constraints are largely unable to rule out dark matter annihilations or decays as an explanation of the PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS excesses. However, if there is an additional Sommerfeld enhancement in dwarfs, which have a velocity dispersion ~10 to 20 times lower than that of the local Galactic halo, then the cross-sections for dark matter annihilating through ϕ\phi's required to explain the excesses are very close to the cross-section upper bounds from Willman 1. Dark matter annihilation directly into τ\tau's is also marginally ruled out by Willman 1 as an explanation of the excesses, and the required cross-section is only a factor of a few below the upper bound from Draco. Finally, we make predictions for the gamma-ray flux expected from the dwarf galaxy Segue 1 for the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We find that for a sizeable fraction of the parameter space in which dark matter annihilation into charged leptons explains the PAMELA excess, Fermi has good prospects for detecting a gamma-ray signal from Segue 1 after one year of observation.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures.     Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection that commonly affects patients who are immuno-compromised. It invariably presents as an acute spreading infection, with very poor prognosis if not treated promptly. We report a case of mucormycosis in immuno-competent elderly patient, presenting as oro-antral communication. Patient’s history, clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed no systemic predisposing factors. The disease was non-fulminant, localized and showed remission after local measures, without parentral anti-fungal therap

    Queue-length synchronization in a communication networks

    We study synchronization in the context of network traffic on a 2d2-d communication network with local clustering and geographic separations. The network consists of nodes and randomly distributed hubs where the top five hubs ranked according to their coefficient of betweenness centrality (CBC) are connected by random assortative and gradient mechanisms. For multiple message traffic, messages can trap at the high CBC hubs, and congestion can build up on the network with long queues at the congested hubs. The queue lengths are seen to synchronize in the congested phase. Both complete and phase synchronization is seen, between pairs of hubs. In the decongested phase, the pairs start clearing, and synchronization is lost. A cascading master-slave relation is seen between the hubs, with the slower hubs (which are slow to decongest) driving the faster ones. These are usually the hubs of high CBC. Similar results are seen for traffic of constant density. Total synchronization between the hubs of high CBC is also seen in the congested regime. Similar behavior is seen for traffic on a network constructed using the Waxman random topology generator. We also demonstrate the existence of phase synchronization in real Internet traffic data.Comment: 13 Pages, 15 figure

    Effects of city wastewater on the characteristics of wheat with varying doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium

    Rapidly growing India is not only facing the problem of water scarcity, but also the mismanagement of tremendous amount of wastewater produced every day. Moreover, food sufficiency has also become challenge to feed the ever increasing population leading to excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Therefore, the study was carried out in Aligarh City of India on wheat crop (Triticum aestivum L.) var. PBW 343 to check the suitability of city wastewater as a source of irrigation water as well as source of nutrients. Three pot experiments were conducted in the winter season of 2006-2008. In Experiment I, nitrogen (N) at the rate of 0, 40, 80, 120 kg ha-1; Experiment II, phosphorus (P) at the rate of 0, 20, 40, 60 kg ha-1; and in Experiment III, potassium (K) at the rate of 0, 15, 30 and 45 kg ha-1 were applied along with the basal doses under the three levels of water; ground water (GW), 50% wastewater (WW) and 100% WW. Lower fertilizer doses, 80 kg N ha-1, 40 kg P ha-1 and 30 kg K ha-1 together with 100%WW proved optimum in three experiments, respectively, enhancing tiller number plant-1, fresh mass plant-1, dry matter plant-1, leaf area, total chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate (PN), nitrate reductase (NR) activity, yield parameters (ear number plant-1, length ear-1, spikelet number ear-1, grain number ear-1 and 1000 grain weight), ultimately resulting in improved grain yield as well as grain carbohydrate and protein content as compared to control as well as higher fertilizer doses. Thus wastewater application not only provided stable supply of water, but also saved fresh water and contributed to environmental security. Moreover, it reduced the use of chemical fertilizers without showing any adverse effect on the yield and quality of wheat. Physicochemical characteristics of wastewater along with microbiological and some heavy metals were analyzed, and most of them were within the permissible limits set by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

    Probing the Relation Between X-ray-Derived and Weak-Lensing-Derived Masses for Shear-Selected Galaxy Clusters: I. A781

    We compare X-ray and weak-lensing masses for four galaxy clusters that comprise the top-ranked shear-selected cluster system in the Deep Lens Survey. The weak-lensing observations of this system, which is associated with A781, are from the Kitt Peak Mayall 4-m telescope, and the X-ray observations are from both Chandra and XMM-Newton. For a faithful comparison of masses, we adopt the same matter density profile for each method, which we choose to be an NFW profile. Since neither the X-ray nor weak-lensing data are deep enough to well constrain both the NFW scale radius and central density, we estimate the scale radius using a fitting function for the concentration derived from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and an X-ray estimate of the mass assuming isothermality. We keep this scale radius in common for both X-ray and weak-lensing profiles, and fit for the central density, which scales linearly with mass. We find that for three of these clusters, there is agreement between X-ray and weak-lensing NFW central densities, and thus masses. For the other cluster, the X-ray central density is higher than that from weak-lensing by 2 sigma. X-ray images suggest that this cluster may be undergoing a merger with a smaller cluster. This work serves as an additional step towards understanding the possible biases in X-ray and weak-lensing cluster mass estimation methods. Such understanding is vital to efforts to constrain cosmology using X-ray or weak-lensing cluster surveys to trace the growth of structure over cosmic time.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, matches version in Ap
