    Numeracy test item readability during transition from pre-school to school

    A key test used in Australia to assess the mathematical knowledge of young children uses illustrations of objects such as coins and three-dimensional shapes. This study explored the effects of giving 104 kindergarten children, aged 4-5 years, the questions with either moveable objects or illustrations. Itwas found that children who were categorized by their teachers as having “higher levels of numeracy” scored well on test questions using either illustrations or objects, while children who were categorized as having “lower levels of numeracy” scored higher with objects than with illustrations. This result could have implications for consideration of test item readability in relation to graphicacy

After a discussion about the socially-determined nature of document analysis, this paper reports the results of an interpretive document analysis of the web page and the pages of abstracts, with a focus on (a) numbers of theses, by year and by institution; (b) methodological approaches used;(c) countries where data were collected; and (d) theses topics.     (2,3)-Cordial Oriented Hypercubes

    L. B. Beasley recently defined a digraph labeling called (2,3)-cordial. Digraphs for which a (2,3)-cordial labeling can be applied are called (2,3)-cordial digraphs. Herein, we consider the existence and identification of (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercubes. We demonstrate that for every nonzero dimension, there exists a (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercube. Additionally, we demonstrate that not all oriented hypercubes of nonzero dimension are (2,3)-cordial. Finally, we present preliminary results regarding the identification of (2,3)-cordial oriented hypercubes, particularly for dimension 3.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Golgi Membrane Dynamics Viewed Through a Lens of Lipids

    The striking morphology of the Golgi complex has fascinated cell biologists since its discovery over 100 years ago. Yet, despite intense efforts to understand how membrane flow relates to Golgi form and function, this organelle continues to baffle cell biologists and biochemists alike. Fundamental questions regarding Golgi function, while hotly debated, remain unresolved. While Golgi function is historically described from a protein-centric point of view, we now appreciate that conceptual frameworks for how lipid metabolism is integrated with Golgi biogenesis and function are essential for a mechanistic understanding of this fascinating organelle. It is from a lipid-centric perspective that we discuss the larger question of Golgi dynamics and membrane trafficking. We review the growing body of evidence for how lipid metabolism is integrally written into the engineering of the Golgi system, and highlight questions for future study

    A central principle of signal transduction is the appropriate control of the process so that relevant signals can be detected with fine spatial and temporal resolution. In the case of lipid-mediated signaling, organization and metabolism of specific lipid mediators is an important aspect of such control. Herein, we review the emerging evidence regarding the roles of Sec14-like phosphatidylinositol transfer proteins (PITPs) in the action of intracellular signaling networks; particularly as these relate to membrane trafficking. Finally, we explore developing ideas regarding how Sec14-like PITPs execute biological function. As Sec14-like proteins define a protein superfamily with diverse lipid (or lipophile) binding capabilities, it is likely these under-investigated proteins will be ultimately demonstrated as a ubiquitously important set of biological regulators whose functions influence a large territory in the signaling landscape of eukaryotic cells

    Using qualitative methods to explore lay explanatory models, health-seeking behaviours and self-care practices of podoconiosis patients in north-west Ethiopia

    Background: Podoconiosis (endemic non-filarial elephantiasis) is a chronic, non-infectious disease resulting from exposure of bare feet to red-clay soil in tropical highlands. This study examined lay beliefs about three under-researched aspects of podoconiosis patients’ care: explanatory models, health-seeking behaviours and self-care. Methods: In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were undertaken with 34 participants (19 male, 15 female) between April-May 2015 at podoconiosis treatment centres across East and West Gojjam regions in north-west Ethiopia. Results: Explanatory models for podoconiosis included contamination from blood, magic, soil or affected individuals. Belief in heredity or divine punishment often delayed clinic attendance. All participants had tried holy water treatment and some, holy soil. Herbal treatments were considered ineffectual, costly and appeared to promote fluid escape. Motivators for clinic attendance were failure of traditional treatments and severe or disabling symptoms. Patients did not report self-treatment with antibiotics. Self-care was hindered by water being unavailable or expensive and patient fatigue. Conclusion: A pluralistic approach to podoconiosis self-treatment was discovered. Holy water is widely valued, though some patients prefer holy soil. Priests and traditional healers could help promote self-care and “signpost” patients to clinics. Change in behaviour and improving water access is key to self-care

    Direct experimental evidence for substrate adatom incorporation into a molecular overlayer

    While the phenomenon of metal substrate adatom incorporation into molecular overlayers is generally believed to occur in several systems, the experimental evidence for this relies on the interpretation of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images, which can be ambiguous and provides no quantitative structural information. We show that surface X- ray diffraction (SXRD) uniquely provides unambiguous identification of these metal adatoms. We present the results of a detailed structural study of the Au(111)-F4TCNQ system, combining surface characterisation by STM, low energy electron diffraction and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with quantitative experimental structural information from normal incidence X-ray standing waves (NIXSW) and SXRD, together with dispersion corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excellent agreement is found between the NIXSW data and the DFT calculations regarding the height and conformation of the adsorbed molecule, which has a twisted geometry rather than the previously supposed inverted bowl shape. SXRD measurements provide unequivocal evidence for the presence and location of Au adatoms, while the DFT calculations show this reconstruction to be strongly energetically favoured.Comment: 38 pages, 10 figure

    Growth and characterisation of MnSb(0 0 0 1)/InGaAs(1 1 1)A epitaxial films

    MnSb layers have been grown on InxGa1-xAs(1 1 1) A virtual substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The effects of both substrate temperature (Tsub) and Sb/Mn beam flux ratio (JSb/Mn) were investigated. The surface morphology, layer and interface structural quality, and magnetic properties have been studied for a 3 × 3 grid of Tsub and JSb/Mn values. Compared to known optimal MBE conditions for MnSb/GaAs(1 1 1) [Tsub = 415°C,JSb/Mn = 6.5], a lower substrate temperature is required for sharp interface formation when growing MnSb on In0.48Ga0.52As(1 1 1) A [Tsub = 350°C,JSb/Mn = 6.5]. At high flux ratio (JSb/Mn = 9.5) elemental Sb is readily incorporated into MnSb films. At higher substrate temperatures and lower flux ratios, (In,Ga) Sb inclusions in the MnSb are formed, as well as MnAs inclusions within the substrate. The Sb and (In,Ga) Sb inclusions are epitaxial, while MnAs inclusions are endotaxial, i.e. all have a crytallographic relationship to the substrate and epilayer. MBE optimisation towards different device structures is discussed along with results from a two-stage growth scheme

    Podoconiosis, trachomatous trichiasis and cataract in northern Ethiopia: a comparative cross-sectional study

    Background: Rural populations in low-income countries commonly suffer from the co-morbidity of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Podoconiosis, trachomatous trichiasis (both NTDs) and cataract are common causes of morbidity among subsistence farmers in the highlands of northern Ethiopia. We explored whether podoconiosis was associated with cataract or trachomatous trichiasis (TT) among this population. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in East Gojam region, Amhara, Ethiopia in May 2016 . Data were collected from patients previously identified as having podoconiosis and from matched healthy neighbourhood controls. Information on socio- demographic factors, clinical factors and past medical history were collected by an interview-administered questionnaire. Clinical examination involved grading of podoconiosis by examination of both legs, measurement of visual acuity, direct ophthalmoscopy of dilated pupils to grade cataract, and eyelid and corneal examination to grade trachoma. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to estimate independent association and correlates of podoconiosis, TT and cataract. Findings: A total of 700 participants were included in this study; 350 podoconiosis patients and 350 healthy neighbourhood controls. The prevalence of TT was higher among podoconiosis patients than controls (65 (18.6%) vs 43 (12.3%)) with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.55 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.12 - 2.11), p=0.05. There was no significant difference in 3 prevalence of cataract between the two populations with an adjusted OR 0.83 (95% CI 0.55-1.38), p=0.37. Mean best visual acuity was 0.59 (SD +/- 0.06) in podoconiosis cases compared to 0.44 (SD +/- 0.04) in controls, p=< 0.001. The proportion of patients classified as blind was higher in podoconiosis cases compared with healthy controls; 5.6% vs 2.0%; adjusted OR 2.63 (1.08-6.39), P = 0.03. Conclusions Individuals with podoconiosis have a higher burden of TT and worse visual acuity than their matched healthy neighbourhood controls. Further research into the environmental and biological reasons for this co-morbidity is required. A shared approach to managing these two NTDs within the same population could be beneficial
