    THE CHORÁ OF PATMOS (GREECE): ANALYSIS OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE, IDENTIFICATION OF RISKS AND ASSESSMENT OF IMPACTS

    Abstract. The Historic Center (Chorá) of Patmos, located in one of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece, was inscribed in the World Heritage List in 1999. The morphological feature, the housing typologies and the building techniques that characterize the Chorá provide an authentic and astonishing expression of the stylistic and typological models of the vernacular architecture of the Greek islands. This paper presents part of the research carried out on the Chorá of Patmos, within the 3D Past project, funded by the European Creative Europe program. The first part illustrates the results of the research concerning the analysis of the material components of the architectural heritage of Patmos: the urban structure, the evolution of the main architectural typologies, the feature of the main building systems. The second part of the paper presents the application of the Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA), a tool for the management of site transformations and in particular for identifying, forecasting and evaluating the impact of potential development on the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the properties. In the case of Patmos the application of HIA can provide an important contribution to manage changes and future transformations in order to preserve the cultural significance of the site and ensure its sustainable development

    Nonlinear optical signatures of ultraviolet light-induced ring opening in α -terpinene

    Photoinduced electrocyclic ring opening reactions in conjugated cylcoalkenes are among the most elementary processes in organic chemistry. One prototypical ring opening reaction transforms cyclohexadiene into hexatriene. It is known that a sequence of sub-100 fs internal conversion transitions precedes bond breaking in cyclohexadiene and some of its derivatives. However, these excited state dynamics have never been directly monitored in solution because of insufficient time resolution. Here we aim to uncover the extraordinary photophysics behind related ultrafast internal conversion processes in a derivative of cyclohexadiene, α-terpinene (α-TP), solvated in cyclohexane. Transient absorption anisotropy experiments conducted with 20 fs laser pulses at 267 nm expose non-exponential depopulation kinetics for the ππ* electronic state of α-TP. Our data show that population transfer rapidly accelerates within the first 100 fs after photoexcitation. In addition, recurrences in two-dimensional photon echo (2DPE) line shapes reveal strong vibronic coupling in a normal mode near 523 cm−1, which involves torsions of the C=C bonds and hydrogen out-of-plane (HOOP) wagging on a vinyl group. With the support of several experiments, we hypothesize that the excited state wavepacket in α-TP undergoes several recurrences in the C=C stretching coordinate before displacement along the C=C torsion/vinyl HOOP coordinate finally sets it free from the Franck–Condon region of the potential energy surface. The unconfined wavepacket departs the ππ* electronic state by way of a conical intersection with a lower energy excited state. The present observations are made possible by recent improvements to both the time resolution and detection sensitivity of our experimental setup. This work demonstrates that it is now possible to acquire 2DPE signals in the deep ultraviolet, which are comparable with high-quality measurements in the visible spectral region. These technical developments open the door to studies of many beautiful models for elementary chemical dynamics

    Meningite criptocócica fatal em paciente com lúpus eritematoso sistêmico juvenil

    Cryptococose é uma infecção fúngica causada pelo Cryptococcus neoformans, geralmente associada com imunodeficiências e drogas imunossupressoras, e foi raramente descrita em pacientes com lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES), particularmente em LES juvenil (LESJ). De janeiro de 1983 a Junho de 2011, 5,604 pacientes foram seguidos em nosso Hospital Universitário e 283 (5%) casos preencheram critérios de classificação diagnóstica do Colégio Americano de Reumatologia para LESJ. Apenas um (0.35%) destes apresentou meningite criptocócica. Esta paciente teve diagnostico de lúpus aos 10 anos de idade. Aos 15 anos, ela apresentou cefaleia, náuseas e vômitos durante 5 dias, sem febre, após viagem a região de cavernas. Neste momento, ela estava em uso de prednisona 10 mg/dia, azatioprina e hidroxicloroquina. Foi realizada punção lombar e a tintura da Índia foi positiva para cryptococo, a cultura do liquido cerebroespinhal também foi positiva para Cryptococcus neoformans e a pesquisa de antígeno cryptocócico sérico foi positiva em título de 1:280. Azatioprina foi suspensa e anfotericina B liposomal (3 mg/Kg/dia) foi iniciada. No entanto, quatro dias após ela desenvolveu amaurose e coma. A tomografia computadorizada de crânio demonstrou áreas isquêmicas e nódulos sugestivos de infecção fúngica. Após quatro dias, ela desenvolveu sepse grave e vancomicina e meropenem foram iniciados, entretanto foi a óbito devido choque séptico. Portanto, meningite cryptocócica foi uma rara e grave infecção oportunista em uma população de lúpus juvenil. Este estudo reforça a importância do diagnóstico precoce e da pronta introdução de agentes antifúngicos, principalmente em pacientes com história de contato com excrementos de pássaros

    Miliary tuberculosis: a severe opportunistic infection in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients

    Abstract Introduction One of the main issues in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) patients is infection, such as tuberculosis (TB). Of note, SLE patients are susceptible to pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB. However, to our knowledge, this contagious disease was rarely reported in pediatric lupus population, particularly diffuse or miliary TB. Therefore, from January 1983 to December 2011, 5,635 patients were followed-up at our Pediatric Rheumatology Unit and 285 (5%) of them met the American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for SLE. Case reports Four (1.4%) of our JSLE patients had disseminated TB and were described herein. All of them were female gender, received BCG vaccination and did not have a history of TB household contact. The median of current age at TB diagnosis and the period between JSLE and TB diagnosis were 17 years old (range 14-20) and 5.5 years (range 2-7), respectively. All patients developed miliary TB during the course of the disease. The median of SLE Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) was 4 (2-16) and the patients were treated with immunosuppressive agents (glucocorticoid, azathioprine and/or intravenous cyclophosphamide). Two of them presented sepsis and TB diagnosis was only established at autopsy, especially with lungs, central nervous system and abdominal involvements. Anti-TB therapy (isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide) was indicated in the other two TB cases, however they deceased. Discussion Miliary TB is a rare and severe opportunist infection in pediatric lupus population. This study reinforces the importance of routine searches for TB in JSLE patients
