Leucoencefalitis aguda hemorrágica de Weston Hurst. Estudio neuropatológico de un caso

Summary. Introduction. Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis (AHL), or Hurst disease is a rare, usually fatal, disease, probably due to an autoimmune cross reaction against myelin antigens present in the central nervous system, and which forms a spectrum of postinfeccious demyelinating diseases with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Case report. The patient was a 21 year old female who presented with an acute encephalopathy and generalized seizures following a 15 day febrile syndrome attributed to amygdalitis; a laboratory work-up, including CSF, was non-diagnostic, and a brain CT scan revealed diffuse cerebral edema. After 12 days the patient died from nosocomial pneumonia and multi-organ failure; neuropathological examination of the brain confirmed the diagnosis of Hurst acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis, with a weak perilesional inflammatory reaction, unlike the usual picture in AHL. Discussion. AHL should be a part of the differential diagnosis of acute encephalopathic diseases, particularly if preceded by systemic infections. The atypical laboratory findings, and the impossibilty of performing a brain MRI were obstacles to the diagnosis in this case. The relative paucity of the perivascular infiltrate is an atypical finding, and could be due to apoptotic clearance of the inflammatory cells, as has been described in other autoimmune demyelinating diseases

A BWM approach to determinants of sustainable entrepreneurship in small and medium-sized enterprises

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute an extremely large percentage of most nations’ businesses. These companies are also expressing growing concerns about sustainability and its strategic integration into operations. However, SMEs have been prevented from making investments in sustainability by the absence of a holistic view of this topic, an overemphasis on an economic perspective, and the consequent devaluation of environmental and social perspectives. In this context, greater importance needs to be given to investigating SME sustainability and building a transparent, holistic, and realistic business model. The present study combines cognitive mapping and the best worst method (BWM) to identify determinants of sustainable entrepreneurship in SMEs. These techniques were applied in two meetings with a panel of specialists with knowledge about and experience in this subject matter. The insights obtained during the two panel meetings allowed the proposed process-oriented approach to assist decision-makers in analyzing a sample of SMEs and selecting the ones that best match the following clusters of decision criteria: (1) entrepreneur profile; (2) firm internal characteristics; (3) economic factors; (4) other external factors; and (5) market. The results were validated by four representatives of the Portuguese Institute for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation (Instituto de Apoio às Pequenas e Médias Empresas e à Inovação (IAPMEI) in Portuguese). The study’s contributions and limitations are also discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A chip-size antenna for wireless EEG

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design and characterization of a patch antenna built on lossy substrates compatible with integrated circuits fabrication. Two different substrates were used for antenna implementation: high-resistivity silicon (HRS) and Corning Pyrex #7740 glass. The antenna prototypes were built to operate close to the 5 GHz ISM band where applications like HIPERLAN and IEEE802.11a are standardized. They operate at a center frequency of 5.705 GHz (HRS) and 5.995 GHz (Pyrex). The application is a wireless wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) braincap. Wireless EEG allows patients to wear the braincap and maintain their mobility while simultaneously having their electrical brain activity monitored.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/4717/2001, POCTI/ESE/38468/2001)

Integrated chip-size antenna for wireless microsystems : fabrication and design considerations

    Get PDF
This paper reports on fabrication and design considerations of an integrated folded shortedpatch chip-size antenna for applications in short-range wireless microsystems and operating frequency of 5.7 GHz. Antenna fabrication is based on wafer-level chip-scale packaging (WLCSP) techniques and consists of two adhesively bonded glass wafers with patterned metallization and through-wafer electrical interconnects. Two different fabrication options based on via formation in glass substrates using excimer laser ablation or powder blasting are presented.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) - (POCTI/ESE/38468/2001, SFRH/BD/4717/2001), EU (IST-2000-10036)

An integrated folded-patch antenna for wireless microsystems

A fully integrated, folded-patch antenna for operation at 5.62 GHz and application in wireless sensor networks has been realized and characterized. Overall dimensions of 4x4x1 mm3, measured bandwidth of 100 MHz and an efficiency of 32% were achieved. The antenna fabrication is based on wafer-level packaging techniques and consists of two adhesively bonded glass substrates with through substrate electrical vias and 3-D metallization. The measured electrical characteristics of the antenna prototype fit well with the simulations.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)(SFRH/BD/4717/2001, POCTI/ ESE/38468/2001, FEDER) and the European Commission (project Blue Whale IST 2000-30006)

Integrated 5.7 GHz chip-size antenna for wireless sensor networks

We report on design, fabrication and characterization of chip-size antennas for operation at 5.7 GHz and use in wireless sensor networks. Application of wafer-level chipscale packaging (WLCSP) techniques like adhesive wafer bonding and through-wafer electrical via formation, combined with the selected antenna types (patch and folded patch) allows on-chip integration and is the main novelty of our work. A short-range wireless link between two systems both equipped with an 8x8 mm2 patch antenna (measured characteristics: 5.705 GHz central frequency, 90 MHz bandwidth @ -10 dB, 0.3 dB gain, 18% efficiency) realized on a high-resistivity silicon (HRS) substrate is demonstrated. A folded-patch antenna built on two stacked glass substrates allows size reduction down to 4.5x4x1 mm3 and has a projected efficiency of 60%.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), project (SFRH/BD/4717/2001 and POCTI/ESE/38468/2001)
