Gentrification: The Class Conflict over Urban Space Moves into the Courts
Gentrification of inner-cities has resulted in a class conflict over urban space. An issue in the federal courts is whether the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can build, sponsor, or subsidize low income housing projects within or near revitalized neighborhoods. In Stryker\u27s Bay Neighborhood Council v. Karlen, the United States Supreme Court held that HUD\u27s decision-making process relating to the placement of low income housing is beyond judicial review. This Article reviews recent litigation in Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston in light of Stryker\u27s Bay, and concludes that in order to protect federal efforts to maintain the integrated character of inner-city neighborhoods, HUD must amend its regulations to deal with the reality of gentrification. HUD should define gentrified areas and recognize that such areas are ideal for integrated housing, so that the federal courts do not have to step in, resulting in delay

The algebra of rewriting for presentations of inverse monoids
We describe a formalism, using groupoids, for the study of rewriting for
presentations of inverse monoids, that is based on the Squier complex
construction for monoid presentations. We introduce the class of pseudoregular
groupoids, an example of which now arises as the fundamental groupoid of our
version of the Squier complex. A further key ingredient is the factorisation of
the presentation map from a free inverse monoid as the composition of an
idempotent pure map and an idempotent separating map. The relation module of a
presentation is then defined as the abelianised kernel of this idempotent
separating map. We then use the properties of idempotent separating maps to
derive a free presentation of the relation module. The construction of its
kernel - the module of identities - uses further facts about pseudoregular

Dynamic confidence during simulated clinical tasks
Objective: Doctors' confidence in their actions is important for clinical performance. While static confidence has been widely studied, no study has examined how confidence changes dynamically during clinical tasks. Method: The confidence of novice (n = 10) and experienced (n = 10) trainee anaesthetists was measured during two simulated anaesthetic crises, bradycardia (easy task) and failure to ventilate (difficult task). Results: As expected, confidence was high in the novice and experienced groups in the easy task. What was surprising, however, was that confidence during the difficult task decreased for both groups, despite appropriate performance. Conclusions: Given that confidence affects performance, it is alarming that doctors who may be acting unsupervised should lose dynamic confidence so quickly. Training is needed to ensure that confidence does not decrease inappropriately during a correctly performed procedure. Whether time on task interacts with incorrect performance to produce further deficits in confidence should now be investigated
MHD Mode Conversion around a 2D Magnetic Null Point
Mode conversion occurs when a wave passes through a region where the sound
and Alfven speeds are equal. At this point there is a resonance, which allows
some of the incident wave to be converted into a different mode. We study this
phenomenon in the vicinity of a two-dimensional, coronal null point. As a wave
approaches the null it passes from low- to high-beta plasma, allowing
conversion to take place. We simulate this numerically by sending in a slow
magnetoacoustic wave from the upper boundary; as this passes through the
conversion layer a fast wave can clearly be seen propagating ahead. Numerical
simulations combined with an analytical WKB investigation allow us to determine
and track both the incident and converted waves throughout the domain.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
