A 5-month-old female Collie dog was examined for intermittent gagging and labored respiration of 7 days duration. Physical examination showed good general body condition. Ausculation of the thorax revealed loud heart sounds on the right side and weak heart sounds on the left side. Lung sounds were normal on the right side but on the left side normal lung sounds were absent and intestinal sounds were heard

Notes on Prairie Species in Iowa. I. Germination and Establishment of Several Species

Information is given concerning the germination and early establishment of 30 prairie species. A stratification treatment was included for all seeds, and scarification was also used for the legumes. Germination percentage in greenhouse flats was generally higher than in field plots with variation in germination ranging from 96% in compassplant, Silphium laciniatum, to zero in some such as Rosa suffulta and Gentiana puberula. Seedlings in field plots were subjected to five levels of competition throughout the growing season. Establishment, measured by numbers of seedlings and vigor in September, was most successful on weed free treatments, least successful on cover crop treatments

Notes on Prairie Species in Iowa. II. Establishment by Sod and Seedling Transplants

Success in establishment of prairie species was measured using sod and seedling transplants. Sod transplants, 25 cm in diameter and 10-20 cm in depth, were successful for 42 species. Fourteen species present in sod transplants set in both annual weeds and Bromus inermis sod illustrated the effect of competition on vigor. After two years, in the weedy plot, all species were present, 11 had flowered and 5 had spread. In the Bromus plot, 9 species had died, 2 had flowered and none had spread. Seedling transplants of 48 of 52 prairie species were present after overwintering. One-quart plastic bags and 3 and 4 peat pots were used. Of 16 species set into Poa pratensis sod, after 2 years, 15 species were present and 7 had flowered

Modelling human factors in perceptual multimedia quality: On the role of personality and culture

Perception of multimedia quality is shaped by a rich interplay between system, context, and human factors. While system and context factors are widely researched, few studies in this area consider human factors as sources of systematic variance. This paper presents an analysis on the influence of personality (Five-Factor Model) and cultural traits (Hofstede Model) on the perception of multimedia quality. A set of 144 video sequences (from 12 short movie excerpts) were rated by 114 participants from a cross-cultural population, producing 1232 ratings. On this data, three models are compared: a baseline model that only considers system factors; an extended model that includes personality and culture as human factors; and an optimistic model in which each participant is modeled as a random effect. An analysis shows that personality and cultural traits represent 9.3% of the variance attributable to human factors while human factors overall predict an equal or higher proportion of variance compared to system factors. In addition, the quality-enjoyment correlation varied across the movie excerpts. This suggests that human factors play an important role in perceptual multimedia quality, but further research to explore moderation effects and a broader range of human factors is warranted
