From âotherâ to involved: User involvement in research: An emerging paradigm

The moral rights of the named author(s) have been asserted.This article explores the issue of âotheringâ service users and the role that involving them, particularly in social policy and social work research may play in reducing this. It takes, as its starting point, the concept of âsocial exclusionâ, which has developed in Europe and the marginal role that those who have been included in this construct have played in its development and the damaging effects this may have. The article explores service user involvement in research and is itself written from a service user perspective. It pays particular attention to the ideological, practical, theoretical, ethical and methodological issues that such user involvement may raise for research. It examines problems that both research and user involvement may give rise to and also considers developments internationally to involve service users/subjects of research, highlighting some of the possible implications and gains of engaging service user knowledge in research and the need for this to be evaluated
Linkages Between the Phenologies of Jack Pine \u3ci\u3e(Pinus Banksiana)\u3c/i\u3e Foliage and Jack Pine Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
A field study conducted in 2001 and 2002 in the Michigan Upper Peninsula investigated seasonal associations between the development of jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb., and larvae of the jack pine budworm Choristoneura pinus Freeman (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). There was almost no active relationship between post-diapause emerging second instars and elongation of vegetative shoots. Early instars were not closely synchronized with the flushing of current-year needle fascicles, which is required to optimize larval feeding. How- ever, there were close feeding and shelter relationships between early instars and year-2 pollen cone development. Associations with, and larval damage to, year-2 seed cones were dependent upon larval population size and posed only minimal and periodic threats to jack pine seed production. As a consequence, early instar jack pine budworm relied almost exclusively on pollen cones for survival. Third to fifth instars vacated pollen cones as soon as they became desiccated. Only then did these larvae start close associations with vegetative shoots. First, they excised partially emerged needles at their base, and when the needle-pairs completely escaped their fascicle sheath, the larvae fed routinely on the complete needle lamina. Late instars, pupae and adults were associated with previous yearsâ and current-year foliage without any apparent bias. This study has shown that it might be more practical to time insecticide strategies, which are intended to manage jack pine budworm larvae, to the treeâs phenology rather than jack pine budworm larval indices
Working with Children with Learning Disabilities and/or who Communicate Non-verbally: Research experiences and their implications for social work education, increased participation and social inclusion
Social exclusion, although much debated in the UK, frequently focuses on children as a key 'at risk' group. However, some groups, such as disabled children, receive less consideration. Similarly, despite both UK and international policy and guidance encouraging the involvement of disabled children and their right to participate in decision-making arenas, they are frequently denied this right. UK based evidence suggests that disabled children's participation lags behind that of their non-disabled peers, often due to social work practitioners' lack of skills, expertise and knowledge on how to facilitate participation. The exclusion of disabled children from decision-making in social care processes echoes their exclusion from participation in society. This paper seeks to begin to address this situation, and to provide some examples of tools that social work educators can introduce into pre- and post-qualifying training programmes, as well as in-service training. The paper draws on the experiences of researchers using non-traditional qualitative research methods, especially non-verbal methods, and describes two research projects, focusing on the methods employed to communicate with and involve disabled children, the barriers encountered and lessons learnt. Some of the ways in which these methods of communication can inform social work education are explored alongside wider issues of how and if increased communication can facilitate greater social inclusion
Measured Sensitivity of the First Mark II Phased Array Feed on an ASKAP Antenna
This paper presents the measured sensitivity of CSIRO's first Mk. II phased
array feed (PAF) on an ASKAP antenna. The Mk. II achieves a minimum
system-temperature-over-efficiency of 78 K at 1.23 GHz
and is 95 K or better from 835 MHz to 1.8 GHz. This PAF was designed for the
Australian SKA Pathfinder telescope to demonstrate fast astronomical surveys

Thirty years after the Chernobyl accident: what lessons have we learnt?
April 2016 sees the 30th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. As a consequence of the accident populations were relocated in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and remedial measures were put in place to reduce the entry of contaminants (primarily 134+137Cs) into the human food chain in a number of countries throughout Europe. Remedial measures are still today in place in a number of countries, and areas of the former Soviet Union remain abandoned.
The Chernobyl accident led to a large resurgence in radioecological studies both to aid remediation and to be able to make future predictions on the post-accident situation, but, also in recognition that more knowledge was required to cope with future accidents. In this paper we discuss, what in the authors' opinions, were the advances made in radioecology as a consequence of the Chernobyl accident.
The areas we identified as being significantly advanced following Chernobyl were: the importance of semi-natural ecosystems in human dose formation; the characterisation and environmental behaviour of âhot particles'; the development and application of countermeasures; the âfixationâ and long term bioavailability of radiocaesium and; the effects of radiation on plants and animals
Sectioning and Counting of Motor Neurons in the L3 to L6 Region of the Adult Mouse Spinal Cord
Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of tissues. This protocol permits the generation of frozen transverse sections of lumbar spinal cord regions L3 to L6. It enables counting of murine ventral horn lumbar motor neurons in a reproducible manner. Methods include spinal column dissection, hydraulic extrusion, and histological processing. The preparation for cryo-sectioning includes embedding lumbar spinal cord in optimal cutting temperature (OCT) medium. The correct orientation of the tissue is critical as calculating the amount of tissue to discard saved time overall. Specific details regarding section thickness and mounting are described. These requirements not only allow optimum coverage of specific regions but also ensure that no individual motor neuron was counted twice. The Nissl bodies of the motor neurons were stained using gallocyanin. The sections obtained are all of a comparable area and quality assurance is consistent. The specificity of the staining enables the scientist to identify and reliably quantify lumbar motor neurons. © 2022 The Authors. Current Protocols published by Wiley Periodicals LLC. Effects of Novel Chalcone Derivatives upon H9c2 and MDCK Cell Viability
Many compounds with potential anti-cancer activity fail to reach the latter stages of clinical trials due to adverse effects, often causing cardiac and renal toxicity. Here, we synthesised a group of
novel chalcone compounds, thought to have potential anti-cancer activity4 and assessed their effects upon cardiac and renal cell viability. Data revealed that all compounds produced minimal
short term toxicity. Further work will be performed to assess the long term effects of these compounds on cell viability, leading to mechanistic studies and structure activity relationship analyses
FIBONACCI SUPERLATTICES OF NARROW-GAP III-V SEMICONDUCTORS
We report theoretical electronic structure of Fibonacci superlattices of
narrow-gap III-V semiconductors. Electron dynamics is accurately described
within the envelope-function approximation in a two-band model.
Quasiperiodicity is introduced by considering two different III-V semiconductor
layers and arranging them according to the Fibonacci series along the growth
direction. The resulting energy spectrum is then found by solving exactly the
corresponding effective-mass (Dirac-like) wave equation using tranfer-matrix
techniques. We find that a self-similar electronic spectrum can be seen in the
band structure. Electronic transport properties of samples are also studied and
related to the degree of spatial localization of electronic envelope-functions
via Landauer resistance and Lyapunov coefficient. As a working example, we
consider type II InAs/GaSb superlattices and discuss in detail our results in

Addressing current knowledge gaps on radionuclide transfer to reptiles
Model intercomparison exercises have identified radionuclide transfer predictions as the greatest source of uncertainty in biota dose assessments. One wildlife group for which few transfer data exist is reptiles. Given that reptiles are an important, and often protected, component of many ecosystems and that assessments of radiation impact on ecosystems are becoming increasingly necessary due to the current nuclear renaissance, there is a need to further develop our current database on transfer to reptiles or find alternative approaches to estimate reptile transfer parameters. Three approaches that have the potential to increase the availability of parameters to predict radionuclide transfer to reptiles are the use of non-lethal sampling techniques, phylogenetic relationships and allometric relationships. Non-lethal sampling is an attractive long term option for deriving transfer parameters, but the derivation of phylogenetic and allometric relationships could provide ways of predicting transfer in the interim
