    Most of the solid state electronic engineering of the system now generally known as the Minnesota Impedance Cardiograph was performed with the support of a five-year contract, NAS9-4500, with the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. This contract ran from 1965 to 1970. In addition to the engineering design and development of the hardware, the contract called for testing on both animals and human subjects. This project also provided funds to construct twenty impedance cardiographs and place them in selected research and clinical facilities for further evaluation. This, then, led to the First Symposium on Impedance Cardiography, held at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, 2-4 June 1969. Twenty-four excellent papers were presented

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In fungi, light is primarily known to influence general morphogenesis and both sexual and asexual sporulation. In order to expand the knowledge on the effect of light in fungi and to determine the role of the light regulatory protein ENVOY in the implementation of this effect, we performed a global screen for genes, which are specifically effected by light in the fungus <it>Hypocrea jecorina </it>(anamorph <it>Trichoderma reesei</it>) using Rapid Subtraction Hybridization (RaSH). Based on these data, we analyzed whether these genes are influenced by ENVOY and if overexpression of ENVOY in darkness would be sufficient to execute its function.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cellular functions of the detected light responsive genes comprised a variety of roles in transcription, translation, signal transduction, metabolism, and transport. Their response to light with respect to the involvement of ENVOY could be classified as follows: (i) ENVOY-mediated upregulation by light; (ii) ENVOY-independent upregulation by light; (iii) ENVOY-antagonized upregulation by light; ENVOY-dependent repression by light; (iv) ENVOY-independent repression by light; and (v) both positive and negative regulation by ENVOY of genes not responsive to light in the wild-type. ENVOY was found to be crucial for normal growth in light on various carbon sources and is not able to execute its regulatory function if overexpressed in the darkness.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The different responses indicate that light impacts fungi like <it>H. jecorina </it>at several cellular processes, and that it has both positive and negative effects. The data also emphasize that ENVOY has an apparently more widespread cellular role in this process than only in modulating the response to light.</p

    Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for Liver Metastasis: Early Experience with the Cyberknife Robotic Radio-Surgery System

    Background: The liver is a common site for malignant metastases. Surgical metastatic resection, ablative therapies, and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) all have advantages and limitations. Preliminary reports reveal SBRT treats hepatic metastases with limited toxicities. We reviewed our institution’s SBRT experience for the treatment of liver metastases to assess toxicity and outcomes.Methods: Hepatic metastases treated with SBRT were retrospectively reviewed from 2008-2010. Computed tomography (CT) identified tumor volume prior to SBRT, local recurrence and out-of-field progression after SBRT. Study endpoints were local recurrence, toxicity, and overall survival.Results: Thirty-three patients had 37 liver metastases treated with a median SBRT dose of 30Gy. Median follow-up was 8.1 months. Five lesions (13.5%) locally recurred after a median of 10.6 months. Seventeen patients had out-of-field progression (15 liver, 6 systemic) after a median of 5.1 months. Overall 23.5-month survival was 45.5%. Five patients reported nausea and seven reported pain after SBRT. There were no grade 4-5 toxicities or cases of liver failure.Conclusion: SBRT is safe and well tolerated in patients with hepatic metastases. SBRT offers a local therapy with limited toxicities to patients with lesions not amenable to traditional ablative, surgical, or regional therapies

    Sources of Sex Information Used by Young British Women Who Have Sex with Women (WSW) and Women Who Have Sex Exclusively with Men (WSEM): Evidence from the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles

    There is little consideration about the provision of information about sex to women who have sex with women (WSW). This study drew on data from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyle, a nationally representative survey of people in Great Britain. Logistic regression was undertaken to examine firstly the relationships between WSW and women who have sex exclusively with men (WSEM) and their main source of information about sex, and secondly between WSW/WSEM and unmet need for information about sex. Each source was included as the binary outcome indicating yes this was the main source, or no this was not the main source of information about sex. The results found that WSW had significantly lower odds of reporting lessons at schools as their main source of information, and significantly higher odds of reporting sources defined as ‘other’ (predominantly first girlfriend/boyfriend or sexual partner) as their main source of information. Reported levels of unmet need for information was also higher amongst young WSW compared with WSEM. This study provides new insights into the sex educational needs of young women and highlights the need for sex education in schools in Great Britain to include information on a full-range of sexual practices, including same-sex sexual relationships

    The branch processes of vortex filaments and Hopf Invariant Constraint on Scroll Wave

    In this paper, by making use of Duan's topological current theory, the evolution of the vortex filaments in excitable media is discussed in detail. The vortex filaments are found generating or annihilating at the limit points and encountering, splitting, or merging at the bifurcation points of a complex function Z(x,t)Z(\vec{x},t). It is also shown that the Hopf invariant of knotted scroll wave filaments is preserved in the branch processes (splitting, merging, or encountering) during the evolution of these knotted scroll wave filaments. Furthermore, it also revealed that the "exclusion principle" in some chemical media is just the special case of the Hopf invariant constraint, and during the branch processes the "exclusion principle" is also protected by topology.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
