    Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Seit Jahren tobt eine heftige gesellschaftliche Debatte um die Nützlichkeit bzw. Schädlichkeit von Impfungen. Das Ergebnis ist eine zunehmende Impfmüdigkeit in der Bevölkerung, die in der Medizin mit Besorgnis gesehen wird. Ziel: Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, ob die Vermittlung von konzeptionellem biomedizinischem Wissen junge Erwachsene in die Lage versetzt, verbreitete Impfmythen als solche zu erkennen und zurückzuweisen. Das Projekt nutzte eine Gesundheitswoche an einer pädagogischen Hochschule. Die Einstellung der Studierenden zum Impfen wurde vor und nach einer gezielten Intervention mit Hilfe eines Fragebogens untersucht. Ergebnis: Die Resultate zeigen, dass sich die Stellungnahmen der Studierenden zu je 7 Aussagen eines Impfbefürworters und eines Impfgegners hoch signifikant verändern. Die Vermittlung von konzeptuellem, biomedizinischem Wissen kann also einen Einfluss auf die Gesundheitskompetenz von Adoleszenten und jugendlichen Erwachsenen haben. Auch in der Gesundheitsförderung und Prävention sollten daher wissensdidaktischen Fragen größere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet werde

    Comparison of performance and fitness traits in German Angler, Swedish Red and Swedish Polled with Holstein dairy cattle breeds under organic production

    Although the use of local breeds is recommended by organic regulations, breed comparisons performed under organic production conditions with similar production intensities are scarce. Therefore, we compared data of local and widely used Holstein dairy cattle breeds from 2011 to 2015 regarding production, fertility and health from German and Swedish organic farms with similar management intensities within country. In Germany, the energy-corrected total milk yield tended to be lower in the local breed Original Angler Cattle (AAZ, 5193 kg) compared to the modern German Holstein Friesian breed (HO, 5620 kg), but AAZ showed higher milk fat and protein contents (AAZ v. HO: 5.09% v. 4.18% and 3.61% v. 3.31%, respectively). In Sweden, the widely used modern Swedish Holstein (SH) breed had the highest milk yield (9209 kg, fat: 4.10%, protein: 3.31%), while the local Swedish Polled (SKB) showed highest milk yield, fat and protein contents (6169 kg, 4.47%, 3.50%, respectively), followed by the local breed Swedish Red (SRB, 8283 kg, 4.33%, 3.46%, respectively). With regard to fertility characteristics, the German breeds showed no differences, but AAZ tended to have less days open compared to HO (−17 days). In Sweden, breeds did not differ with regard to calving interval, but both local breeds showed a lower number of days open (−10.4 in SRB and −24.1 in SKB compared to SH), and SKB needed fewer inseminations until conception (−0.5 inseminations) compared to SH. Proportion of test day records with a somatic cell count content of ≥100 000 cells per ml milk did not reveal breed differences in any of the two countries. German breeds did not differ regarding the proportion of cows with veterinary treatments. In Sweden, SRB showed the lowest proportion of cows with general veterinary treatment as well as specific treatment due to udder problems (22.8 ± 6.42 and 8.05 ± 2.18, respectively), but the local breed SKB did not differ from SH in either of the two traits. In Sweden, we found no breed differences regarding veterinary treatments due to fertility problems or diagnosis of claw or leg problems during claw trimming. Our results indicate a stronger expression of the antagonism between production and functional traits with increasing production intensity. Future breed comparisons, therefore, need to consider different production intensities within organic farming in order to derive practical recommendations as to how to implement European organic regulations with regard to a suitable choice of breeds

    Eber und Börge im Vergleich – Auswirkungen der Kastration auf agonistisches und sexuell motiviertes Verhalten unter ökologischen Haltungsbedingungen

    Nach dem Verbot der betäubungslosen Ferkelkastration nach VO (EG) 889 (2008) zum 01.01.2012 stellt die Ebermast eine mögliche Alternative für die ökologische Schweinefleischerzeugung dar. Im Rahmen des Projektes „Ebermast im Verbund: Entwicklung eines Konzepts für die Produktion, Schlachtung, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung ökologisch erzeugter Eber entlang der Wertschöpfungskette“ ist es ein Ziel, das Ausmaß möglichen unerwünschten Verhaltens, wie agonistische Interaktionen und Aufreitverhalten der Eber, mit dem von Börgen unter praxisüblichen ökologischen Haltungsbedingungen zu vergleichen und wichtige Einflussfaktoren hierauf zu identifizieren. Auch mögliche Verletzungsfolgen sollen einbezogen werden. Aus einer Zwischenauswertung werden hier erste Ergebnisse zum Ausmaß des genannten Verhaltens und der Verletzungsfolgen vorgestellt. 9 Gruppen Eber und 7 Gruppen Börge wurden mit einem Lebendgewicht von etwa 80 kg auf vier ökologischen Praxisbetrieben beobachtet. Agonistische Interaktionen (Kopfschlagen, Beißen, Kampf und Besteigen ohne sexuelle Motivation) und Besteigen mit sexueller Motivation wurden mittels kontinuierlicher Verhaltenszählung (continuous behaviour sampling) jeweils über die ersten 15 Minuten einer jeden Lichtstunde von zusammenhängenden 48h-Aufnahmen ausgewertet. Zum selben Zeitpunkt wurden zusätzlich die Verletzungen bei den 109 Ebern und 91 Börgen gezählt. Eber zeigten bezüglich aller erhobener Verhaltensparameter gegenüber den Börgen signifikant höhere Häufigkeiten bzw. Dauern. Dagegen konnten hinsichtlich der Verletzungsscores zwischen Ebern und Börgen keine signifikanten Unterschiede festgestellt werden. Die Untersuchung wird fortgesetzt

    Agitation behaviour and heart rate of dairy cows with and without calf-contact during different stimuli in the parlour

    Farmers who are interested to rear calves together with the dairy cows during the first weeks of life are confronted with problems of poor milk let-down during machine milking. Therefore it was investigated whether 3 calf-associated stimuli were capable to enhance milkability of the cows. In this contribution, the effect of the stimulations during milking on heart rate (HR) and agitation (rumination, posture of the head and behaviour during udder preparation)are presented. Olfactory (calf hair), tactile (teat massage) and acoustic(recorded calf calls)stimulation were tested on 15 dairy cows with permanent contact to their calves and 22 control cows. All cows were milked twice daily. Stimulation tests were conducted in 3 consecutive weeks during day 25–51 of lactation, each stimulus tested in 4 milkings versus 4 routine milkings. As HR was only measured at morning milkings there were only 2 repetitions per stimulus. Mixed models with the fixed factors stimulation (vs. routine milking), calf-contact, breed (German Red Pied vs. German Holstein) and parity (primiparous vs. pluriparous) and the random factor animal were applied for each parameter. Rumination and posture of the head were not influenced by any factor. Agitation behaviour and HR in the parlour were not affected by calf-contact. This questions stress as elicitor of problems with milk ejection. Tactile stimulation had an increasing, acoustic stimulation a decreasing effect on HR. German Red Pied showed more agitation behaviour during udder preparation and a higher HR in this phase compared to the German Holsteins. This could be due to differences in temperament or sensitivity to touching. According to expectations, primiparous cows showed more agitation during udder preparation than pluriparous, but this was not accompanied by an HR increase. The results did not indicate higher stress reactions in the parlour of dairy cows with calf contact. Acoustic stimulation led to a lower HR independent from calf-contact compared with HR at routine milking

This study investigates the influence of three calf-associated stimuli during milking on milk yield, milk content and milk flow characteristics: olfactory (calf hair), tactile (teat massage) and acoustic (recorded calf calls) stimulation including 14 dairy cows with permanent contact to their calves (group KM) and 22 control cows (group M). All cows were milked twice daily. Stimulation tests were conducted in three consecutive weeks during day 25-51 of lactation, each stimulus tested in four milkings versus four milkings without stimulation. Mixed models with the fixed factors stimulation (vs. no stimulation), group, time of day, interaction stimulation*group and the random factor cows were applied for each stimulus. Stimulations had only minor effects on the measured parameters and did thus not improve the existing milkability of the dairy cows with and without calf contact. Differences between the groups were significant. KM-cows had a decreased milk yield of ca. 10 kg per milking and reduced fat content of about 1%. Also milk flow was lower than in M-cows. Further research on how to improve milk let-down of cows with calf contact should pay attention to the duration of pre-stimulation and the length of daily calf contact

    The frequency of item writing flaws in multiple-choice questions used in high stakes nursing assessments

    Multiple-choice questions are a common assessment method in nursing examinations. Few nurse educators, however, have formal preparation in constructing multiple-choice questions. Consequently, questions used in baccalaureate nursing assessments often contain item-writing flaws, or violations to accepted item-writing guidelines. In one nursing department, 2770 MCQs were collected from tests and examinations administered over a five-year period from 2001 to 2005. Questions were evaluated for 19 frequently occurring item-writing flaws, for cognitive level, for question source, and for the distribution of correct answers. Results show that almost half (46.2%) of the questions contained violations of item-writing guidelines and over 90% were written at low cognitive levels. Only a small proportion of questions were teacher generated (14.1%), while 36.2% were taken from testbanks and almost half (49.4%) had no source identified. MCQs written at a lower cognitive level were significantly more likely to contain item-writing flaws. While there was no relationship between the source of the question and item-writing flaws, teachergenerated questions were more likely to be written at higher cognitive levels (p < 0.001). Correct answers were evenly distributed across all four options and no bias was noted in the placement of correct options. Further training in item-writing is recommended for all faculty members who are responsible for developing tests. Pre-test review and quality assessment is also recommended to reduce the occurrence of item-writing flaws and to improve the quality of test questions. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.     Es wird vermutetet, dass Hörner bei der Thermoregulation von Rindern eine Rolle spielen könnten. Deshalb wurde die Atemfrequenz, als Indikator für Hitzestress, von behornten und enthornten Europäischen Milchkühen, die gemeinsam in einer Herde im Stall gehalten wurden, erfasst. Die Gruppenzusammensetzung (N=7) war bezüglich Laktationsstand (35-354 d), Milchleistung (5,6-36,6 kg/d) und Fellfarbe balanciert. Die Atemfrequenz jedes Tieres wurde an fünf aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen durch eine Person erfasst. Der Temperature Humidity Index (THI) wurde alle 10 min. im Stall gemessen. Zur Datenanalyse wurde ein gemischtes Modell verwendet (zufälliger Faktor: Tier, fixe Faktoren: Hornstatus, THI). Der THI lag zwischen 71,9-81,5 (Mittel=75,9). Mit steigendem THI, stieg auch die Atemfrequenz an (Modellschätzwert=0,9, P=0,0341). Die Atemfrequenz lag zwischen 29,6-78,5 (Mittel=55,0). Der Hornstatus hatte keinen Einfluss auf die Atemfrequenz (P=0,5294). Im Stall hatte die Behornung keinen abschwächenden Effekt auf leichten bis moderaten Hitzestress
