    Audiovisual semantic congruency effect with onomatopoeia

    It has been reported that when a congruent natural sound precedes briefly presented visual stimuli, it promotes performance in psychophysics detection tasks. Onomatopoeias refer to words that phonetically mimic or suggest actual sounds. Onomatopoeic words are a form of sound symbolism and are frequently used in Japanese language. In this study, we examined whether the presentation of spoken Japanese onomatopoeia to Japanese native-speakers results in visual detection sensitivity changes. Results indicate that when onomatopoeias are presented 227 ms before a visual stimulus, they have a modulatory audiovisual effect. This effect is closer to the results observed with natural sounds than spoken words, with d’ being lower for onomatopoeias when compared with natural sounds. Such suggests that Japanese spoken onomatopoeias may be processed in a manner that is closer to natural sounds than spoken words and points to behavioral consequences of sound symbolism

    Conformationally-Locked C-Glycosides: Tuning Aglycone Interactions for Optimal Cheperone Behaviour in Gaucher Fibroblasts

    A series of conformationally locked C-glycosides based on the 3-aminopyrano[3,2-b]pyrrol-2(1H)-one (APP) scaffold has been synthesized. The key step involved a totally stereocontrolled C-Michael addition of a serine-equivalent C-nucleophile to tri-O-benzyl-2-nitro-D-galactal, previously published by the authors. Stereoselective transformations of the Michael adduct allowed us the synthesis of compounds with mono- or diantennated aglycone moieties and different topologies. In vitro screening showed highly selective inhibition of bovine liver β-glucosidase/β-galactosidase and specific inhibition of human β-glucocerebrosidase among lysosomal glycosidases for compounds bearing palmitoyl chains in the aglycone, with a marked dependence of the inhibition potency upon their number and location. Molecular dynamics simulations highlighted the paramount importance of an optimal orientation of the hydrophobic substituent to warrant efficient non-glycone interactions, which are critical for the binding affinity. The results provide a rationale for the strong decrease of the inhibition potency of APP compounds on going from neutral to acidic pH.     Lipid profile disturbances are highly prevalent in Japanese-Brazilians

    Alta prevalência de diabetes em população nipo-brasileira de Bauru/SP foi previamente relatada. Visando a complementar a avaliação do risco cardiometabólico, este estudo analisou distúrbios no perfil lipídico de 1.330 nipo-brasileiros (46% homens) > 30 anos. Definiu-se hipercolesterolemia por níveis de colesterol total > 240 mg/dL; hipertrigliceridemia por valores > 150 mg/dL e HDL-colesterol baixo por valores < 40 mg/dL e < 50 mg/dL para homens e mulheres, respectivamente. A prevalência desses distúrbios foi comparada pelo qui-quadrado, estratificando-se por sexos e categorias glicêmicas. As médias dos lipídeos e lipoproteínas foram comparadas entre sexos pelo teste t de Student. A prevalência de hipertrigliceridemia foi de 66,0% (IC95%:63,5 - 68,5%), sendo mais comum em homens e aumentando com a piora da categoria glicêmica; a trigliceridemia média foi 235,7 &plusmn; 196,3 mg/dL. A prevalência de hipercolesterolemia foi 24,4% (IC95%:22,1 - 26,7%); HDL-C baixo foi observado em 43,0% (IC95%:39,4 - 46,6%] das mulheres e 17,5% (IC95%:14,5 - 20,5%) dos homens, porém a razão colesterol total/HDL-C foi menor em mulheres (4,23 &plusmn; 0,68 vs. 4,40 &plusmn; 0,73; p < 0,001). Em nipo-brasileiros, a hipertrigliceridemia é a anormalidade lipídica mais comum, em concordância com a elevada prevalência de diabetes. Os homens apresentaram pior perfil lipídico que as mulheres. Sugere-se que hábitos de vida ocidental possam estar deteriorando a saúde desses indivíduos.High prevalence of diabetes has been previously reported in Japanese-Brazilians. In an attempt to better estimate the cardiometabolic risk, this study evaluated lipid disorders in 1,330 Japanese-Brazilians (46% men) aged >30 years. Hypercholesterolemia was defined as serum cholesterol > 240 mg/dL, hypertriglyceridemia as values > 150 mg/dL and low-HDL-C as values <40 mg/dL and <50 mg/dl for men and women respectively. The prevalence of dyslipidemias was compared by the chi-square test between gender and glycemic category. Mean and Standard Deviation of lipids and lipoproteins were compared by the Student t-Test between gender. Hypertriglyceridemia was detected in 66.0% [95% CI: 63.5-68.5] of the population, being more common in men and increasing with deterioration of glucose metabolism. Mean level of triglycerides was 235.7&plusmn;196.3 mg/dL. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 24.4% [95% CI: 22.1- 26.7]. Low HDL-C was observed in 17.5% [95% CI: 14.5-20.5] of men and 43.0% [95% CI: 39.4- 46.6] of women but total / HDL-cholesterol ratio was lower in women (4.23 &plusmn; 0.68 vs. 4.40 &plusmn; 0.73, p<0.001). In Japanese-Brazilians, hypertriglyceridemia is the commonest dyslipidemia, in agreement with the high prevalence of diabetes.     Crystalline ground state in chiral Gross-Neveu and Cooper pair models at finite densities

    We study the possibility of spatially non-uniform ground state in (1+1)-dimensional models with quartic fermi interactions at finite fermion densities by introducing chemical potential \mu. We examine the chiral Gross-Neveu model and the Cooper pair model as toy models of the chiral symmetry breaking and the difermion pair condensates which are presumed to exist in QCD. We confirm in the chiral Gross-Neveu model that the ground state has a crystalline structure in which the chiral condensate oscillates in space with wave number 2\mu. Whereas in the Cooper pair model we find that the vacuum structure is spatially uniform. Some discussions are given to explain this difference.Comment: 18 pages, REVTeX, 3 eps figure

    Variations in atherosclerosis and remodeling patterns in aorta and carotids

    Atherosclerosis is a progressive disease that causes vascular remodeling that can be positive or negative. The evolution of arterial wall thickening and changes in lumen size under current "standard of care" in different arterial beds is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine arterial remodeling and progression/regression of atherosclerosis in aorta and carotid arteries of individuals at risk for atherosclerosis normalized over a 1-year period. In this study, 28 patients underwent at least 2 black-blood in vivo cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) scans of aorta and carotids over a one-year period (Mean 17.8 ± 7.5 months). Clinical risk profiles for atherosclerosis and medications were documented and patients were followed by their referring physicians under current "standard of care" guidelines. Carotid and aortic wall lumen areas were matched across the time-points from cross-sectional images. The wall area increased by 8.67%, 10.64%, and 13.24% per year (carotid artery, thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta respectively, p < 0.001). The lumen area of the abdominal aorta increased by 4.97% per year (p = 0.002), but the carotid artery and thoracic aorta lumen areas did not change significantly. The use of statin therapy did not change the rate of increase of wall area of carotid artery, thoracic and abdominal aorta, but decreased the rate of change of lumen area of carotid artery (-3.08 ± 11.34 vs. 0.19 ± 12.91 p < 0.05).
