    What do implicit measures measure?

    We identify several ongoing debates related to implicit measures, surveying prominent views and considerations in each debate. First, we summarize the debate regarding whether performance on implicit measures is explained by conscious or unconscious representations. Second, we discuss the cognitive structure of the operative constructs: are they associatively or propositionally structured? Third, we review debates whether performance on implicit measures reflects traits or states. Fourth, we discuss the question of whether a person’s performance on an implicit measure reflects characteristics of the person who is taking the test or characteristics of the situation in which the person is taking the test. Finally, we survey the debate about the relationship between implicit measures and (other kinds of) behavior

    Fractal Spacetime Structure in Asymptotically Safe Gravity

    Four-dimensional Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is likely to be an asymptotically safe theory which is applicable at arbitrarily small distance scales. On sub-Planckian distances it predicts that spacetime is a fractal with an effective dimensionality of 2. The original argument leading to this result was based upon the anomalous dimension of Newton's constant. In the present paper we demonstrate that also the spectral dimension equals 2 microscopically, while it is equal to 4 on macroscopic scales. This result is an exact consequence of asymptotic safety and does not rely on any truncation. Contact is made with recent Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 20 pages, late

    A Minimal Length from the Cutoff Modes in Asymptotically Safe Quantum Gravity

    Within asymptotically safe Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG), the quantum 4-sphere is discussed as a specific example of a fractal spacetime manifold. The relation between the infrared cutoff built into the effective average action and the corresponding coarse graining scale is investigated. Analyzing the properties of the pertinent cutoff modes, the possibility that QEG generates a minimal length scale dynamically is explored. While there exists no minimal proper length, the QEG sphere appears to be "fuzzy" in the sense that there is a minimal angular separation below which two points cannot be resolved by the cutoff modes.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figur

    The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: RSD measurement from the power spectrum and bispectrum of the DR12 BOSS galaxies

    We measure and analyse the bispectrum of the final, Data Release 12, galaxy sample provided by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, splitting by selection algorithm into LOWZ and CMASS galaxies. The LOWZ sample contains 361\,762 galaxies with an effective redshift of zLOWZ=0.32z_{\rm LOWZ}=0.32, and the CMASS sample 777\,202 galaxies with an effective redshift of zCMASS=0.57z_{\rm CMASS}=0.57. Combining the power spectrum, measured relative to the line-of-sight, with the spherically averaged bispectrum, we are able to constrain the product of the growth of structure parameter, ff, and the amplitude of dark matter density fluctuations, σ8\sigma_8, along with the geometric Alcock-Paczynski parameters, the product of the Hubble constant and the comoving sound horizon at the baryon drag epoch, H(z)rs(zd)H(z)r_s(z_d), and the angular distance parameter divided by the sound horizon, DA(z)/rs(zd)D_A(z)/r_s(z_d). After combining pre-reconstruction RSD analyses of the power spectrum monopole, quadrupole and bispectrum monopole; with post-reconstruction analysis of the BAO power spectrum monopole and quadrupole, we find f(zLOWZ)σ8(zLOWZ)=0.427±0.056f(z_{\rm LOWZ})\sigma_8(z_{\rm LOWZ})=0.427\pm 0.056, DA(zLOWZ)/rs(zd)=6.60±0.13D_A(z_{\rm LOWZ})/r_s(z_d)=6.60 \pm 0.13, H(zLOWZ)rs(zd)=(11.55±0.38)103kms1H(z_{\rm LOWZ})r_s(z_d)=(11.55\pm 0.38)10^3\,{\rm kms}^{-1} for the LOWZ sample, and f(zCMASS)σ8(zCMASS)=0.426±0.029f(z_{\rm CMASS})\sigma_8(z_{\rm CMASS})=0.426\pm 0.029, DA(zCMASS)/rs(zd)=9.39±0.10D_A(z_{\rm CMASS})/r_s(z_d)=9.39 \pm 0.10, H(zCMASS)rs(zd)=(14.02±0.22)103kms1H(z_{\rm CMASS})r_s(z_d)=(14.02\pm 0.22)10^3\,{\rm kms}^{-1} for the CMASS sample. We find general agreement with previous BOSS DR11 and DR12 measurements. Combining our dataset with {\it Planck15} we perform a null test of General Relativity (GR) through the γ\gamma-parametrisation finding γ=0.7330.069+0.068\gamma=0.733^{+0.068}_{-0.069}, which is 2.7σ\sim2.7\sigma away from the GR predictions.Comment: 34 pages, 22 figures, 8 tables.     From Big Bang to Asymptotic de Sitter: Complete Cosmologies in a Quantum Gravity Framework

    Using the Einstein-Hilbert approximation of asymptotically safe quantum gravity we present a consistent renormalization group based framework for the inclusion of quantum gravitational effects into the cosmological field equations. Relating the renormalization group scale to cosmological time via a dynamical cutoff identification this framework applies to all stages of the cosmological evolution. The very early universe is found to contain a period of ``oscillatory inflation'' with an infinite sequence of time intervals during which the expansion alternates between acceleration and deceleration. For asymptotically late times we identify a mechanism which prevents the universe from leaving the domain of validity of the Einstein-Hilbert approximation and obtain a classical de Sitter era.Comment: 47 pages, 17 figure

    Isolation of polymorphic microsatellites in the stemless thistle (Cirsium acaule) and their utility in other Cirsium species

    The genus Cirsium includes species with both widespread and restricted geographical distributions, several of which are serious weeds. Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from the stemless thistle Cirsium acaule. Eight were polymorphic in C. acaule, six in C. arvense and seven in C. heterophyllum. One locus monomorphic in C. acaule showed polymorphism in C. heterophyllum. The mean number of alleles per locus was 4.1 in C. acaule, 6.2 in C. arvense and 2.9 in C. heterophyllum. These nine loci were also amplified in C. eriophorum and C. vulgare, suggesting that these markers may be of use throughout the genus

    SDSS-IV MANGA: Spatially Resolved Star Formation Main Sequence and LI(N)ER Sequence

    We present our study on the spatially resolved H_alpha and M_star relation for 536 star-forming and 424 quiescent galaxies taken from the MaNGA survey. We show that the star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), derived based on the H_alpha emissions, is strongly correlated with the M_star surface density (Sigma_star) on kpc scales for star- forming galaxies and can be directly connected to the global star-forming sequence. This suggests that the global main sequence may be a consequence of a more fundamental relation on small scales. On the other hand, our result suggests that about 20% of quiescent galaxies in our sample still have star formation activities in the outer region with lower SSFR than typical star-forming galaxies. Meanwhile, we also find a tight correlation between Sigma_H_alpha and Sigma_star for LI(N)ER regions, named the resolved "LI(N)ER" sequence, in quiescent galaxies, which is consistent with the scenario that LI(N)ER emissions are primarily powered by the hot, evolved stars as suggested in the literature.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures.     Measuring the impact of health policies using Internet search patterns: the case of abortion

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Internet search patterns have emerged as a novel data source for monitoring infectious disease trends. We propose that these data can also be used more broadly to study the impact of health policies across different regions in a more efficient and timely manner.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>As a test use case, we studied the relationships between abortion-related search volume, local abortion rates, and local abortion policies available for study.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our initial integrative analysis found that, both in the US and internationally, the volume of Internet searches for abortion is inversely proportional to local abortion rates and directly proportional to local restrictions on abortion.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings are consistent with published evidence that local restrictions on abortion lead individuals to seek abortion services outside of their area. Further validation of these methods has the potential to produce a timely, complementary data source for studying the effects of health policies.</p
